NEW JERUSALEMSAGRADA BIBLIA
Jesus began to speak to them in parables once again,1 Jesus tornou a falar-lhes por meio de parábolas:
'The kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding.2 The kingdom of the heavens has become like a king who made a wedding feast for his son,
He sent his servants to cal those who had been invited, but they would not come.3 and sent his bondmen to call the persons invited to the wedding feast, and they would not come.
Next he sent some more servants with the words, "Tel those who have been invited: Look, mybanquet is al prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to thewedding."4 Again he sent other bondmen, saying, Say to the persons invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fatted beasts are killed, and all things ready; come to the wedding feast.
But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business,5 But they made light of it, and went, one to his own land, and another to his commerce.
and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and kil ed them.6 And the rest, laying hold of his bondmen, ill-treated and slew {them}.
The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town.7 And {when} the king {heard of it he} was wroth, and having sent his forces, destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to beunworthy,8 Then he says to his bondmen, The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy;
go to the main crossroads and invite everyone you can find to come to the wedding."9 go therefore into the thoroughfares of the highways, and as many as ye shall find invite to the wedding feast.
So these servants went out onto the roads and col ected together everyone they could find, bad andgood alike; and the wedding hal was fil ed with guests.10 And those bondmen went out into the highways, and brought together all as many as they found, both evil and good; and the wedding feast was furnished with guests.
When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a weddinggarment,11 And the king, having gone in to see the guests, beheld there a man not clothed with a wedding garment.
and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?" And the man wassilent.12 And he says to him, {My} friend, how camest thou in here not having on a wedding garment? But he was speechless.
Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the darknessoutside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth."13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him feet and hands, and take him away, and cast him out into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
For many are invited but not al are chosen.'14 For many are called ones, but few chosen ones.
Then the Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap him in what he said.15 And they send out to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one, for thou regardest not men?s person;
And they sent their disciples to him, together with some Herodians, to say, 'Master, we know that youare an honest man and teach the way of God in all honesty, and that you are not afraid of anyone, becausehuman rank means nothing to you.16 tell us therefore what thou thinkest: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
Give us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'17 But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, Why tempt ye me, hypocrites?
But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, 'You hypocrites! Why are you putting me to thetest?18 Shew me the money of the tribute. And they presented to him a denarius.
Show me the money you pay the tax with.' They handed him a denarius,19 And he says to them, Whose {is} this image and superscription?
and he said, 'Whose portrait is this? Whose title?'20 They say to him, Caesar?s. Then he says to them, Pay then what is Caesar?s to Caesar, and what is God?s to God.
They replied, 'Caesar's.' Then he said to them, 'Very wel , pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- andGod what belongs to God.'21 And when they heard {him}, they wondered, and left him, and went away.
When they heard this they were amazed; they left him alone and went away.22 saying, Teacher, Moses said, If any one die, not having children, his brother shall marry his wife and shall raise up seed to his brother.
That day some Sadducees -- who deny that there is a resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,23 Now there were with us seven brethren; and the first having married died, and not having seed, left his wife to his brother.
'Master, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is to marry the widow, his sister-in-law, toraise children for his brother.24 In like manner also the second and the third, unto the seven.
Now we had a case involving seven brothers; the first married and then died without children, leavinghis wife to his brother;25 And last of all the woman also died.
the same thing happened with the second and third and so on to the seventh,26 In the resurrection therefore of which of the seven shall she be wife, for all had her?
and then last of al the woman herself died.27 And Jesus answering said to them, Ye err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God.
Now at the resurrection, whose wife among the seven wil she be, since she had been married tothem al ?'28 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as angels of God in heaven.
Jesus answered them, 'You are wrong, because you understand neither the scriptures nor the powerof God.29 Quanto à ressurreição dos mortos, não lestes o que Deus vos disse:
For at the resurrection men and women do not marry; no, they are like the angels in heaven.30 Eu sou o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaac e o Deus de Jacó {Ex 3,6}? Ora, ele não é Deus dos mortos, mas Deus dos vivos.
And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God himself said to you:31 E, ouvindo esta doutrina, as turbas se enchiam de grande admiração.
I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He is God, not of the dead, but ofthe living.'32 Sabendo os fariseus que Jesus reduzira ao silêncio os saduceus, reuniram-se
And his teaching made a deep impression on the people who heard it.33 e um deles, doutor da lei, fez-lhe esta pergunta para pô-lo à prova:
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together34 Mestre, qual é o maior mandamento da lei?
and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question,35 Respondeu Jesus: Amarás o Senhor teu Deus de todo teu coração, de toda tua alma e de todo teu espírito {Dt 6,5}.
'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?'36 Este é o maior e o primeiro mandamento.
Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, and with alyour mind.37 E o segundo, semelhante a este, é: Amarás teu próximo como a ti mesmo {Lv 19,18}.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.38 Nesses dois mandamentos se resumem toda a lei e os profetas.
The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.39 Como os fariseus se agrupassem, Jesus interrogou-os:
On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'40 Que pensais vós de Cristo? De quem é filho? Responderam: De Davi!
While the Pharisees were gathered round, Jesus put to them this question,41 Como então, prosseguiu Jesus, Davi, falando sob inspiração do Espírito, chama-o Senhor, dizendo:
'What is your opinion about the Christ? Whose son is he?' They told him, 'David's.'42 O Senhor disse a meu Senhor: Senta-te à minha direita, até que eu ponha teus inimigos por escabelo dos teus pés {Sl 109,1}?
He said to them, 'Then how is it that David, moved by the Spirit, cal s him Lord, where he says:43 Se, pois, Davi o chama Senhor, como é ele seu filho?
The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at my right hand, til I have made your enemies yourfootstool?44 Ninguém pôde responder-lhe nada. E, depois daquele dia, ninguém mais ousou interrogá-lo.
'If David cal s him Lord, how then can he be his son?'
No one could think of anything to say in reply, and from that day no one dared to ask him any furtherquestions.
