1 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples he moved on from there to teach and preachin their towns.1 Et factum est, cum consummasset Jesus, præcipiens duodecim discipulis suis, transiit inde ut doceret, et prædicaret in civitatibus eorum.
2 Now John had heard in prison what Christ was doing and he sent his disciples to ask him,2 Joannes autem cum audisset in vinculis opera Christi, mittens duos de discipulis suis,
3 'Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?'3 ait illi : Tu es, qui venturus es, an alium exspectamus ?
4 Jesus answered, 'Go back and tel John what you hear and see;4 Et respondens Jesus ait illis : Euntes renuntiate Joanni quæ audistis, et vidistis.
5 the blind see again, and the lame walk, those suffering from virulent skin-diseases are cleansed, andthe deaf hear, the dead are raised to life and the good news is proclaimed to the poor;5 Cæci vident, claudi ambulant, leprosi mundantur, surdi audiunt, mortui resurgunt, pauperes evangelizantur :
6 and blessed is anyone who does not find me a cause of falling.'6 et beatus est, qui non fuerit scandalizatus in me.
7 As the men were leaving, Jesus began to talk to the people about John, 'What did you go out into thedesert to see? A reed swaying in the breeze? No?7 Illis autem abeuntibus, cœpit Jesus dicere ad turbas de Joanne : Quid existis in desertum videre ? arundinem vento agitatam ?
8 Then what did you go out to see? A man wearing fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothes areto be found in palaces.8 Sed quid existis videre ? hominem mollibus vestitum ? Ecce qui mollibus vestiuntur, in domibus regum sunt.
9 Then what did you go out for? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet:9 Sed quid existis videre ? prophetam ? Etiam dico vobis, et plus quam prophetam.
10 he is the one of whom scripture says: Look, I am going to send my messenger in front of you toprepare your way before you.10 Hic est enim de quo scriptum est : Ecce ego mitto angelum meum ante faciem tuam, qui præparabit viam tuam ante te.
11 'In truth I tel you, of al the children born to women, there has never been anyone greater than Johnthe Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.11 Amen dico vobis, non surrexit inter natos mulierum major Joanne Baptista : qui autem minor est in regno cælorum, major est illo.
12 Since John the Baptist came, up to this present time, the kingdom of Heaven has been subjected toviolence and the violent are taking it by storm.12 A diebus autem Joannis Baptistæ usque nunc, regnum cælorum vim patitur, et violenti rapiunt illud.
13 Because it was towards John that al the prophecies of the prophets and of the Law were leading;13 Omnes enim prophetæ et lex usque ad Joannem prophetaverunt :
14 and he, if you wil believe me, is the Elijah who was to return.14 et si vultis recipere, ipse est Elias, qui venturus est.
15 Anyone who has ears should listen!15 Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.
16 'What comparison can I find for this generation? It is like children shouting to each other as they sit inthe market place:16 Cui autem similem æstimabo generationem istam ? Similis est pueris sedentibus in foro : qui clamantes coæqualibus
17 We played the pipes for you, and you wouldn't dance; we sang dirges, and you wouldn't bemourners.17 dicunt : Cecinimus vobis, et non saltastis : lamentavimus, et non planxistis.
18 'For John came, neither eating nor drinking, and they say, "He is possessed."18 Venit enim Joannes neque manducans, neque bibens, et dicunt : Dæmonium habet.
19 The Son of man came, eating and drinking, and they say, "Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend oftax col ectors and sinners." Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.'19 Venit Filius hominis manducans, et bibens, et dicunt : Ecce homo vorax, et potator vini, publicanorum et peccatorum amicus. Et justificata est sapientia a filiis suis.
20 Then he began to reproach the towns in which most of his miracles had been worked, because theyrefused to repent.20 Tunc cœpit exprobrare civitatibus, in quibus factæ sunt plurimæ virtutes ejus, quia non egissent pœnitentiam :
21 'Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done inTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.21 Væ tibi Corozain, væ tibi Bethsaida : quia, si in Tyro et Sidone factæ essent virtutes quæ factæ sunt in vobis, olim in cilicio et cinere pœnitentiam egissent.
22 Stil , I tel you that it wil be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on Judgement Day than for you.22 Verumtamen dico vobis : Tyro et Sidoni remissius erit in die judicii, quam vobis.
23 And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be raised as high as heaven? You shal be flung down tohell. For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have been standing yet.23 Et tu Capharnaum, numquid usque in cælum exaltaberis ? usque in infernum descendes, quia si in Sodomis factæ fuissent virtutes quæ factæ sunt in te, forte mansissent usque in hanc diem.
24 Stil , I tel you that it wil be more bearable for Sodom on Judgement Day than for you.'24 Verumtamen dico vobis, quia terræ Sodomorum remissius erit in die judicii, quam tibi.
25 At that time Jesus exclaimed, 'I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding thesethings from the learned and the clever and revealing them to little children.25 In illo tempore respondens Jesus dixit : Confiteor tibi, Pater, Domine cæli et terræ, quia abscondisti hæc a sapientibus, et prudentibus, et revelasti ea parvulis.
26 Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do.26 Ita Pater : quoniam sic fuit placitum ante te.
27 Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father,just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.27 Omnia mihi tradita sunt a Patre meo. Et nemo novit Filium, nisi Pater : neque Patrem quis novit, nisi Filius, et cui voluerit Filius revelare.
28 'Come to me, al you who labour and are overburdened, and I wil give you rest.28 Venite ad me omnes qui laboratis, et onerati estis, et ego reficiam vos.
29 Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you wil find rest foryour souls.29 Tollite jugum meum super vos, et discite a me, quia mitis sum, et humilis corde : et invenietis requiem animabus vestris.
30 Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.'30 Jugum enim meum suave est, et onus meum leve.
