NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples he moved on from there to teach and preachin their towns.1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he passed from thence, to teach and preach in their cities.
Now John had heard in prison what Christ was doing and he sent his disciples to ask him,2 Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him:
'Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?'3 Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another?
Jesus answered, 'Go back and tel John what you hear and see;4 And Jesus making answer said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen.
the blind see again, and the lame walk, those suffering from virulent skin-diseases are cleansed, andthe deaf hear, the dead are raised to life and the good news is proclaimed to the poor;5 The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them.
and blessed is anyone who does not find me a cause of falling.'6 And blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me.
As the men were leaving, Jesus began to talk to the people about John, 'What did you go out into thedesert to see? A reed swaying in the breeze? No?7 And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went you out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind?
Then what did you go out to see? A man wearing fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothes areto be found in palaces.8 But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments, are in the houses of kings.
Then what did you go out for? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet:9 But what went you out to see? a prophet? yea I tell you, and more than a prophet.
he is the one of whom scripture says: Look, I am going to send my messenger in front of you toprepare your way before you.10 For this is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.
'In truth I tel you, of al the children born to women, there has never been anyone greater than Johnthe Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.11 Amen I say to you, there hath not risen among them that are born of women a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is the lesser in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
Since John the Baptist came, up to this present time, the kingdom of Heaven has been subjected toviolence and the violent are taking it by storm.12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away.
Because it was towards John that al the prophecies of the prophets and of the Law were leading;13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John:
and he, if you wil believe me, is the Elijah who was to return.14 And if you will receive it, he is Elias that is to come.
Anyone who has ears should listen!15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
'What comparison can I find for this generation? It is like children shouting to each other as they sit inthe market place:16 But whereunto shall I esteem this generation to be like? It is like to children sitting in the market place.
We played the pipes for you, and you wouldn't dance; we sang dirges, and you wouldn't bemourners.17 Who crying to their companions say: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned.
'For John came, neither eating nor drinking, and they say, "He is possessed."18 For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say: He hath a devil.
The Son of man came, eating and drinking, and they say, "Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend oftax col ectors and sinners." Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.'19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her children.
Then he began to reproach the towns in which most of his miracles had been worked, because theyrefused to repent.20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein were done the most of his miracles, for that they had not done penance.
'Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done inTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.21 Woe to thee, Corozain, woe to thee, Bethsaida: for if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in you, they had long ago done penance in sackcloth and ashes.
Stil , I tel you that it wil be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on Judgement Day than for you.22 But I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment, than for you.
And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be raised as high as heaven? You shal be flung down tohell. For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have been standing yet.23 And thou Capharnaum, shalt thou be exalted up to heaven? thou shalt go down even unto hell. For if in Sodom had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in thee, perhaps it had remained unto this day.
Stil , I tel you that it wil be more bearable for Sodom on Judgement Day than for you.'24 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
At that time Jesus exclaimed, 'I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding thesethings from the learned and the clever and revealing them to little children.25 At that time Jesus answered and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to the little ones.
Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do.26 Yea, Father; for so hath it seemed good in thy sight.
Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.27 All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him.
'Come to me, al you who labour and are overburdened, and I wil give you rest.28 Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you.
Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you wil find rest foryour souls.29 Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls.
Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.'30 For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.
