1 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples he moved on from there to teach and preachin their towns.	1 Jésus donna donc ses instructions à ses douze disciples; lorsqu’il eut terminé, il partit pour enseigner et prêcher dans les villes de la région.
2 Now John had heard in prison what Christ was doing and he sent his disciples to ask him,	2 Or voici que Jean-Baptiste, dans sa prison, entendait parler de ce que faisait le Christ, et il lui fit porter par ses disciples le message suivant:
3 'Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?'	3 "Es-tu celui qui doit venir ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?”
4 Jesus answered, 'Go back and tel John what you hear and see;	4 Jésus leur donna cette réponse: "Allez voir Jean et racontez-lui ce que vous entendez et voyez:
5 the blind see again, and the lame walk, those suffering from virulent skin-diseases are cleansed, andthe deaf hear, the dead are raised to life and the good news is proclaimed to the poor;	5 les aveugles retrouvent la vue, les éclopés marchent, les lépreux sont purifiés, les sourds entendent, les morts se réveillent et les pauvres entendent une bonne nouvelle.
6 and blessed is anyone who does not find me a cause of falling.'	6 Mais heureux particulièrement celui qui me voit, si ce n’est pas pour sa chute.”
7 As the men were leaving, Jesus began to talk to the people about John, 'What did you go out into thedesert to see? A reed swaying in the breeze? No?	7 Lorsque les hommes furent repartis, Jésus commença à parler de Jean à la foule: "Que cherchiez-vous à voir quand vous alliez au désert? Un roseau agité par le vent?
8 Then what did you go out to see? A man wearing fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothes areto be found in palaces.	8 Qu’alliez-vous voir? Un homme dans le luxe? Mais les gens qui vivent dans le luxe se trouvent dans les palais des rois.
9 Then what did you go out for? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet:	9 “Alors pourquoi alliez-vous là-bas? Pour voir un prophète? Oui, je vous le dis, et plus qu’un prophète.
10 he is the one of whom scripture says: Look, I am going to send my messenger in front of you toprepare your way before you.	10 Car c’est de lui qu’il est écrit: J’envoie mon messager devant toi pour qu’il te prépare le chemin.
11 'In truth I tel you, of al the children born to women, there has never been anyone greater than Johnthe Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.	11 “Oui, je vous le dis, on n’a pas vu se lever plus grand que Jean parmi les fils de la femme. Et pourtant le plus petit dans le Royaume des Cieux est plus grand que lui.
12 Since John the Baptist came, up to this present time, the kingdom of Heaven has been subjected toviolence and the violent are taking it by storm.	12 “Depuis la venue de Jean-Baptiste jusqu’à présent, le Royaume des Cieux se prend par force et ce sont les plus décidés qui l’emportent.
13 Because it was towards John that al the prophecies of the prophets and of the Law were leading;	13 “Jusqu’à Jean on en restait à la prophétie, tous les prophètes aussi bien que la Loi,
14 and he, if you wil believe me, is the Elijah who was to return.	14 et si vous voulez me croire, cet Élie qui devait revenir, c’est lui.
15 Anyone who has ears should listen!	15 Celui qui a des oreilles, qu’il entende!
16 'What comparison can I find for this generation? It is like children shouting to each other as they sit inthe market place:	16 “Comment vais-je dépeindre la présente génération? Elle fait penser à des gamins assis sur la place; un groupe interpelle les autres:
17 We played the pipes for you, and you wouldn't dance; we sang dirges, and you wouldn't bemourners.	17 Nous avons joué de la flûte pour vous et vous n’avez pas dansé; et quand nous avons fait la lamentation, vous n’avez pas pleuré.
18 'For John came, neither eating nor drinking, and they say, "He is possessed."	18 “Rappelez-vous Jean: il ne mangeait pas, il ne buvait pas, et quand il est venu on a dit: Il a un démon.
19 The Son of man came, eating and drinking, and they say, "Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend oftax col ectors and sinners." Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.'	19 Et puis vient le Fils de l’Homme qui mange et qui boit, et l’on dit: Il aime le vin et la bonne chère, c’est un ami des collecteurs de l’impôt et des pécheurs! Mais on verra que la Sagesse a bien fait les choses.”
20 Then he began to reproach the towns in which most of his miracles had been worked, because theyrefused to repent.	20 Alors Jésus commença à invectiver les villes où la plupart de ses miracles avaient eu lieu, car elles ne s’étaient pas converties.
21 'Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done inTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.	21 "Malheur à toi, Korazin! Malheur à toi, Bethsaïde! Si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chez vous avaient eu lieu dans Tyr et dans Sidon, depuis longtemps elles auraient fait pénitence avec le sac et la cendre.
22 Stil , I tel you that it wil be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on Judgement Day than for you.	22 Aussi je vous dis: Tyr et Sidon s’en tireront à meilleur compte que vous au jour du jugement.
23 And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be raised as high as heaven? You shal be flung down tohell. For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have been standing yet.	23 “Et toi, Capharnaüm, vas-tu t’élever jusqu’au ciel? Non, tu descendras jusque chez les morts. Car si l’on avait eu chez les gens de Sodome les miracles qui ont eu lieu chez toi, leur ville serait encore là aujourd’hui.
24 Stil , I tel you that it wil be more bearable for Sodom on Judgement Day than for you.'	24 Aussi je vous dis: Sodome s’en tirera à meilleur compte que toi au jour du jugement.”
25 At that time Jesus exclaimed, 'I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding thesethings from the learned and the clever and revealing them to little children.	25 En cette même occasion Jésus éleva la voix et dit: "Je proclamerai tes grandeurs, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, car tu as caché ces choses aux sages et aux intelligents et tu les as révélées à des tout-petits.
26 Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do.	26 Oui, Père, c’est cela qui t’a paru bon!
27 Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father,just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.	27 “Tout m’a été remis par mon Père et personne ne connaît vraiment le Fils, si ce n’est le Père; et personne ne connaît vraiment le Père, si ce n’est le Fils et celui à qui le Fils veut le révéler.
28 'Come to me, al you who labour and are overburdened, and I wil give you rest.	28 “Venez à moi, vous tous qui peinez, qui êtes surchargés, et je vous donnerai le repos.
29 Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you wil find rest foryour souls.	29 Prenez sur vous mon joug et apprenez de moi que je suis doux et humble de cœur, et vous trouverez le repos pour vos âmes.
30 Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.'	30 Car mon joug est aisé et ma charge légère.”
