NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:1 The LORD said to Moses:
'Make yourself two trumpets; make them of beaten silver, so that you can use them for summoningthe community, and for sounding the order to break camp.2 "Make two trumpets of beaten silver, which you shall use in assembling the community and in breaking camp.
Whenever they are sounded, the whole community must gather round you, at the entrance to theTent of Meeting.3 When both are blown, the whole community shall gather round you at the entrance of the meeting tent;
But if only one trumpet is sounded, then only the leaders, the heads of Israel's thousands, mustgather round you.4 but when one of them is blown, only the princes, the chiefs of the troops of Israel, shall gather round you.
'When the trumpet blast is accompanied by a battle cry, the encampments pitched to the east wil setout.5 When you sound the first alarm, those encamped on the east side shall set out;
At the second blast accompanied by a battle cry, the encampments pitched to the south wil set out.For breaking camp, the trumpet blast wil be accompanied by a battle cry,6 when you sound the second alarm, those encamped on the south side shall set out; when you sound the third alarm, those encamped on the west side shall set out; when you sound the fourth alarm, those encamped on the north side shall set out. Thus shall the alarm be sounded for them to depart.
but for assembling the community the trumpets will be sounded without battle cry.7 But in calling forth an assembly you are to blow an ordinary blast, without sounding the alarm.
The Aaronite priests wil sound the trumpets; this is a perpetual decree for you and your descendants.8 "It is the sons of Aaron, the priests, who shall blow the trumpets; and the use of them is prescribed by perpetual statute for you and your descendants.
'When in your country you go to war against an enemy who is oppressing you, you will soundtrumpets with a battle cry, and Yahweh your God wil remember you, and you wil be delivered from yourenemies.9 When in your own land you go to war against an enemy that is attacking you, you shall sound the alarm on the trumpets, and the LORD, your God, will remember you and save you from your foes.
At your festivals, solemnities and new-moon feasts, you will sound the trumpets over your burntofferings and communion sacrifices, so that they recal you to the remembrance of your God. I am Yahweh yourGod.'10 On your days of celebration, your festivals, and your new-moon feasts, you shall blow the trumpets over your holocausts and your peace offerings; this will serve as a reminder of you before your God. I, the LORD, am your God."
In the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, the cloud rose fromwhere the Dwel ing of the Testimony was,11 In the second year, on the twentieth day of the second month, the cloud rose from the Dwelling of the commandments.
and the Israelites set out, in marching order, from the desert of Sinai. The cloud came to rest in thedesert of Paran.12 The Israelites moved on from the desert of Sinai by stages, until the cloud came to rest in the desert of Paran.
These were the men who set out in the vanguard, at Yahweh's order through Moses:13 The first time that they broke camp at the bidding of the LORD through Moses,
first went the standard of the camp of the Judahites and their units, with Nahshon son ofAmminadab commanding that contingent;14 the camp of the Judahites, under its own standard and arranged in companies, was the first to set out. Nahshon, son of Amminadab, was over their host,

Then came the standard of the camp of the Reubenites and their units, with Elizur son of Shedeurcommanding that contingent;18 The camp of the Reubenites, under its own standard and arranged in companies, was the next to set out, with Elizur, son of Shedeur, over their host,

Then came the standard of the camp of the Ephraimites and their units, with Elishama son ofAmmihud commanding that contingent;22 The camp of the Ephraimites next set out, under its own standard and arranged in companies, with Elishama, son of Ammihud, over their host,

Last of al , the rearguard of al the camps, came the standard of the camp of the Danites and theirunits, with Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai commanding that contingent;25 Finally, as rear guard for all the camps, the camp of the Danites set out, under its own standard and arranged in companies, with Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai, over their host,

Such was the order of march for the Israelites, unit by unit. So they set out.28 This was the order of departure for the Israelites, company by company. As they were setting out,
Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, his father-in-law, 'We are setting out for the countryof which Yahweh has said: I shall give it to you. Come with us, and we wil treat you wel , for Yahweh haspromised good things for Israel.'29 Moses said to his brother-in-law Hobab, son of Reuel the Midianite, "We are setting out for the place which the LORD has promised to give us. Come with us, and we will be generous toward you, for the LORD has promised prosperity to Israel."
'I wil not come with you,' he replied, 'but shal go to my own country and kin.'30 But he answered, "No, I will not come. I am going instead to my own country and to my own kindred."
'Do not leave us,' Moses said, 'for you know where we can camp in the desert, and so you will beour eyes.31 Moses said, "Please, do not leave us; you know where we can camp in the desert, and you will serve as eyes for us.
If you come with us, we shal share with you whatever blessings Yahweh gives us.'32 If you come with us, we will share with you the prosperity the LORD will bestow on us."
They set out from Yahweh's mountain and travel ed for three days, while the ark of the covenant ofYahweh preceded them on the three-day journey, searching out a place for them to halt.33 They moved on from the mountain of the LORD, a three days' journey, and the ark of the covenant of the LORD which was to seek out their resting place went the three days' journey with them.
In the daytime, Yahweh's cloud was over them, once they had broken camp.34 And when they set out from camp, the cloud of the LORD was over them by day.
Whenever the ark set out, Moses would say: Rise, Yahweh, may your enemies be scattered andthose who hate you flee at your approach!35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses would say, "Arise, O LORD, that your enemies may be scattered, and those who hate you may flee before you."
And when it halted, he would say: Come back, Yahweh, to the countless thousands of Israel!36 And when it came to rest, he would say, "Return, O LORD, you who ride upon the clouds, to the troops of Israel."
