Jeremiah 36

1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh,	1 ויהי בשנה הרביעת ליהויקים בן יאשיהו מלך יהודה היה הדבר הזה אל ירמיהו מאת יהוה לאמר
2 'Take a scroll and on it write al the words I have spoken to you about Israel, Judah and al the nations,from the day I first spoke to you, in the time of Josiah, until today.	2 קח לך מגלת ספר וכתבת אליה את כל הדברים אשר דברתי אליך על ישראל ועל יהודה ועל כל הגוים מיום דברתי אליך מימי יאשיהו ועד היום הזה
3 Perhaps when the House of Judah hears about al the disaster I intend to inflict on them, they will turn,each one of them, from their evil behaviour, so that I can forgive their sinful guilt.'	3 אולי ישמעו בית יהודה את כל הרעה אשר אנכי חשב לעשות להם למען ישובו איש מדרכו הרעה וסלחתי לעונם ולחטאתם
4 Jeremiah then summoned Baruch son of Neriah, who at his dictation wrote down on the scrol all thewords Yahweh had spoken to him.	4 ויקרא ירמיהו את ברוך בן נריה ויכתב ברוך מפי ירמיהו את כל דברי יהוה אשר דבר אליו על מגלת ספר
5 Jeremiah then gave Baruch this order, 'As I am prevented from entering the Temple of Yahweh,	5 ויצוה ירמיהו את ברוך לאמר אני עצור לא אוכל לבוא בית יהוה
6 you yourself must go and, from the scrol you wrote at my dictation, read all Yahweh's words to thepeople in his Temple on the day of the fast, and in this way you can read them in the hearing also of all theJudaeans who come in from their towns.	6 ובאת אתה וקראת במגלה אשר כתבת מפי את דברי יהוה באזני העם בית יהוה ביום צום וגם באזני כל יהודה הבאים מעריהם תקראם
7 Perhaps their prayers wil move Yahweh and they wil turn one and al from their evil behaviour, forgreat is the furious anger with which Yahweh has threatened this people.'	7 אולי תפל תחנתם לפני יהוה וישבו איש מדרכו הרעה כי גדול האף והחמה אשר דבר יהוה אל העם הזה
8 Baruch son of Neriah duly carried out the order that the prophet Jeremiah had given him, to read alYahweh's words from the book in his Temple.	8 ויעש ברוך בן נריה ככל אשר צוהו ירמיהו הנביא לקרא בספר דברי יהוה בית יהוה
9 Now, in the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, al the people ofJerusalem and all the people who could get to Jerusalem from the towns of Judah were summoned to a fastbefore Yahweh.	9 ויהי בשנה החמשית ליהויקים בן יאשיהו מלך יהודה בחדש התשעי קראו צום לפני יהוה כל העם בירושלם וכל העם הבאים מערי יהודה בירושלם
10 Baruch then read Jeremiah's words from the book; this happened in the room of Gemariah son of thescribe Shaphan, in the upper court at the entry of the New Gate of the Temple of Yahweh, where all the peoplecould hear.	10 ויקרא ברוך בספר את דברי ירמיהו בית יהוה בלשכת גמריהו בן שפן הספר בחצר העליון פתח שער בית יהוה החדש באזני כל העם
11 Micaiah son of Gemariah, son of Shaphan, having heard all Yahweh's words read from the book,	11 וישמע מכיהו בן גמריהו בן שפן את כל דברי יהוה מעל הספר
12 went down to the royal palace, to the scribe's room. Al the chief men were in session: the scribeElishama, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son ofHananiah and al the other chief men;	12 וירד בית המלך על לשכת הספר והנה שם כל השרים יושבים אלישמע הספר ודליהו בן שמעיהו ואלנתן בן עכבור וגמריהו בן שפן וצדקיהו בן חנניהו וכל השרים
13 and to them Micaiah reported al the words he heard as Baruch was reading the book aloud to thepeople.	13 ויגד להם מכיהו את כל הדברים אשר שמע בקרא ברוך בספר באזני העם
14 The chief men then by common consent sent Jehudi son of Netaniah to Baruch, with Shelemiah sonof Cushi, to say, 'Come, and bring the scrol with you which you have been reading to the people.'	14 וישלחו כל השרים אל ברוך את יהודי בן נתניהו בן שלמיהו בן כושי לאמר המגלה אשר קראת בה באזני העם קחנה בידך ולך ויקח ברוך בן נריהו את המגלה בידו ויבא אליהם
15 Bringing the scrol with him, Baruch son of Neriah appeared before them. 'Sit down,' they said, 'andread it out.' So Baruch read it to them.	15 ויאמרו אליו שב נא וקראנה באזנינו ויקרא ברוך באזניהם
16 Having heard al the words they turned to one another in alarm and said to Baruch, 'We must certainlyinform the king of this.'	16 ויהי כשמעם את כל הדברים פחדו איש אל רעהו ויאמרו אל ברוך הגיד נגיד למלך את כל הדברים האלה
17 They then questioned Baruch, 'Tel us', they said, 'how you came to write al these words.'	17 ואת ברוך שאלו לאמר הגד נא לנו איך כתבת את כל הדברים האלה מפיו
18 'Jeremiah dictated them al to me,' Baruch replied, 'and I wrote them down in ink in this book.'	18 ויאמר להם ברוך מפיו יקרא אלי את כל הדברים האלה ואני כתב על הספר בדיו
19 The chief men said to Baruch, 'You and Jeremiah had better go into hiding; and do not tel anyonewhere you are.'	19 ויאמרו השרים אל ברוך לך הסתר אתה וירמיהו ואיש אל ידע איפה אתם
20 Whereupon they went off to the king in the palace court, depositing the scrol in the room of the scribeElishama. They then informed the king of the whole affair.	20 ויבאו אל המלך חצרה ואת המגלה הפקדו בלשכת אלישמע הספר ויגידו באזני המלך את כל הדברים
21 The king sent Jehudi for the scrol , and he brought it from the room of the scribe Elishama and read itto the king and all the chief men standing round the king.	21 וישלח המלך את יהודי לקחת את המגלה ויקחה מלשכת אלישמע הספר ויקראה יהודי באזני המלך ובאזני כל השרים העמדים מעל המלך
22 The king was sitting in his winter apartments -- it was the ninth month -- with a fire burning in a brazierin front of him.	22 והמלך יושב בית החרף בחדש התשיעי ואת האח לפניו מבערת
23 Each time Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut them off with a scribe's knife and threwthem into the fire in the brazier until the whole of the scrol had been burnt in the brazier fire.	23 ויהי כקרוא יהודי שלש דלתות וארבעה יקרעה בתער הספר והשלך אל האש אשר אל האח עד תם כל המגלה על האש אשר על האח
24 But in spite of hearing al these words, neither the king nor any of his courtiers took alarm or tore theirclothes;	24 ולא פחדו ולא קרעו את בגדיהם המלך וכל עבדיו השמעים את כל הדברים האלה
25 and although Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had urged the king not to burn the scrol he wouldnot listen to them,	25 וגם אלנתן ודליהו וגמריהו הפגעו במלך לבלתי שרף את המגלה ולא שמע אליהם
26 but ordered the king's son Jerahmeel and Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel toarrest the scribe Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah. But Yahweh had hidden them.	26 ויצוה המלך את ירחמאל בן המלך ואת שריהו בן עזריאל ואת שלמיהו בן עבדאל לקחת את ברוך הספר ואת ירמיהו הנביא ויסתרם יהוה
27 Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, after the king had burnt the scrol containing the wordsBaruch had written at Jeremiah's dictation,	27 ויהי דבר יהוה אל ירמיהו אחרי שרף המלך את המגלה ואת הדברים אשר כתב ברוך מפי ירמיהו לאמר
28 'Take another scroll and write down all the words that were written on the first scrol burnt byJehoiakim king of Judah.	28 שוב קח לך מגלה אחרת וכתב עליה את כל הדברים הראשנים אשר היו על המגלה הראשנה אשר שרף יהויקים מלך יהודה
29 And as regards Jehoiakim king of Judah, you are to say, "Yahweh says this: You have burnt thatscrol , saying: Why have you written down: The king of Babylon will certainly come and lay this country wasteand leave it without human or animal?	29 ועל יהויקים מלך יהודה תאמר כה אמר יהוה אתה שרפת את המגלה הזאת לאמר מדוע כתבת עליה לאמר בא יבוא מלך בבל והשחית את הארץ הזאת והשבית ממנה אדם ובהמה
30 So, this is what Yahweh says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He wil have no one to occupy thethrone of David, and his corpse wil be tossed out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.	30 לכן כה אמר יהוה על יהויקים מלך יהודה לא יהיה לו יושב על כסא דוד ונבלתו תהיה משלכת לחרב ביום ולקרח בלילה
31 I shal punish him, his offspring and his courtiers for their guilt; on them, on the citizens of Jerusalemand on the people of Judah I shal bring the total disaster which I had decreed for them but to which they havepaid no attention."	31 ופקדתי עליו ועל זרעו ועל עבדיו את עונם והבאתי עליהם ועל ישבי ירושלם ואל איש יהודה את כל הרעה אשר דברתי אליהם ולא שמעו
32 Jeremiah then took another scrol and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, who in it atJeremiah's dictation wrote all the words of the book that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burnt, with many similarwords in addition.	32 וירמיהו לקח מגלה אחרת ויתנה אל ברוך בן נריהו הספר ויכתב עליה מפי ירמיהו את כל דברי הספר אשר שרף יהויקים מלך יהודה באש ועוד נוסף עליהם דברים רבים כהמה
