Sirach 4

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 My child, do not refuse the poor a livelihood, do not tantalise the needy.	1 Figlio, non defraudare il povero del necessario alla vita e non fare aspettare gli occhi che dicono bisogno.
2 Do not add to the sufferings of the hungry, do not bait anyone in distress.	2 Non disprezzare chi ha fame e non esasperare chi è in difficoltà.
3 Do not aggravate a heart already angry, nor keep the destitute waiting for your alms.	3 Non esacerbare il cuore esasperato e non rifiutare un dono a chi chiede.
4 Do not repulse a hard-pressed beggar, nor turn your face from the poor.	4 Non respingere l'afflitto che ti supplica e non stornare la faccia dal povero.
5 Do not avert your eyes from the needy, give no one occasion to curse you;	5 Non sviare l'occhio dal bisognoso, per non dargli motivo di maledirti:
6 for if someone curses you in distress, his Maker will give ear to the imprecation.	6 se ti maledice nell'amarezza del suo cuore, Colui che l'ha fatto esaudirà la sua preghiera.
7 Gain the love of the community, in the presence of the great bow your head.	7 Renditi amabile con l'assemblea, ma con le autorità umilia il tuo capo.
8 To the poor lend an ear, and courteously return the greeting.	8 Piega verso il povero il tuo orecchio e rispondigli miti parole di pace.
9 Save the oppressed from the hand of the oppressor, and do not be mean-spirited in your judgements.	9 Libera l'oppresso dalla mano dell'oppressore, senza essere timido nel dare il giudizio.
10 Be like a father to the fatherless and as good as a husband to their mothers. And you wil be like a childto the Most High, who will love you more than your own mother does.	10 Sii un padre per gli orfani e come un marito per le loro madri: così sarai tu vero figlio dell'Altissimo, che ti amerà più di tua madre.
11 Wisdom brings up her own children and cares for those who seek her.	11 La sapienza fa crescere i suoi figli e ha cura di quanti la cercano.
12 Whoever loves her loves life, those who seek her early wil be fil ed with joy.	12 Chi l'ama, ama la vita, si rallegreranno quanti l'aspettano prima dell'aurora.
13 Whoever possesses her wil inherit honour, and wherever he walks the Lord will bless him.	13 Chi la possiede erediterà la gloria, dovunque vada, il Signore lo benedirà.
14 Those who serve her minister to the Holy One, and the Lord loves those who love her.	14 Chi vi si consacra serve il Santo, il Signore ama quanti l'amano.
15 Whoever obeys her rules the nations, whoever pays attention to her dwells secure.	15 Chi le è docile giudicherà le nazioni, e chi la coltiva avrà la casa tranquilla.
16 If he trusts himself to her he wil inherit her, and his descendants will remain in possession of her;	16 Se uno le s'affida, l'avrà in possesso, e ne saranno forniti i suoi discendenti.
17 for though she takes him at first through winding ways, bringing fear and faintness on him, trying himout with her discipline til she can trust him, and testing him with her ordeals,	17 Dapprima lo farà camminare per vie tortuose, mettendogli addosso paura e trepidazione, lo tormenterà con la sua disciplina; prima di affidarsi a lui lo metterà alla prova con i suoi decreti;
18 she then comes back to him on the straight road, makes him happy and reveals her secrets to him.	18 ma dopo un poco a lui farà ritorno e lo rallegrerà, gli farà noti i suoi segreti.
19 If he goes astray, however, she abandons him and leaves him to his own destruction.	19 Se poi lui si allontana, essa l'abbandona e lo consegna nelle mani della sua rovina.
20 Take circumstances into account and beware of evil, and have no cause to be ashamed of yourself;	20 Tenuto conto di quest'epoca, guardati dal male, senza vergognarti di te stesso:
21 for there is a shame that leads to sin and a shame that is honourable and gracious.	21 perché c'è una vergogna che conduce al peccato e c'è una vergogna che porta gloria e grazia.
22 Do not be too severe on yourself, do not let shame lead you to ruin.	22 Non rinnegare te stesso per riguardo agli altri, non essere timido quando rischi la rovina.
23 Do not refrain from speaking when it will do good, and do not hide your wisdom;	23 Non evitare la parola quando è necessaria, e non nascondere la tua sapienza,
24 for your wisdom is made known by what you say, your erudition by the words you utter.	24 perché nella parola si riconosce la sapienza e l'istruzione nel detto della lingua.
25 Do not contradict the truth, rather blush for your own ignorance.	25 Non contrastare la verità, ma vergognati della tua ignoranza.
26 Do not be ashamed to confess your sins, do not struggle against the current of the river.	26 Non vergognarti per ammettere i tuoi peccati e non opporti alla corrente del fiume.
27 Do not grovel to the foolish, do not show partiality to the influential.	27 Non sottometterti allo stolto e non aver soggezione del potente.
28 Fight to the death for truth, and the Lord God wil war on your side.	28 Lotta per la verità sino alla morte e il Signore Dio combatterà al tuo fianco.
29 Do not be bold of tongue, yet idle and slack in deed;	29 Non essere temerario con la lingua e poi pigro e inerte nelle opere.
30 do not be like a lion at home, or cowardly towards your servants.	30 Non essere come un leone nella tua casa e non fare l'eroe davanti ai tuoi servi.
31 Do not let your hands be outstretched to receive, yet tight-fisted when the time comes to give back.	31 Non sia la tua mano tesa per prendere e chiusa nel rendere.
