Sirach 4

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 My child, do not refuse the poor a livelihood, do not tantalise the needy.	1 Figliuolo non defraudare il povero della limosina, e non rivolger dal povero gli occhi tuoi.
2 Do not add to the sufferings of the hungry, do not bait anyone in distress.	2 Non disprezzare colui, che ha fame, e non inasprire il povero nella sua indigenza.
3 Do not aggravate a heart already angry, nor keep the destitute waiting for your alms.	3 Non affliggere il cuor del meschino; e non digerire il soccorso a chi è in angustia.
4 Do not repulse a hard-pressed beggar, nor turn your face from the poor.	4 Non rigettar la preghiera del tribolato e non volger la faccia dal meschinello.
5 Do not avert your eyes from the needy, give no one occasion to curse you;	5 Non rivolgere gli occhi tuoi dal mendico irritandolo; e non dare occasione, che ti maledicano dietro le spalle que', che ti pregano;
6 for if someone curses you in distress, his Maker will give ear to the imprecation.	6 Perocché la imprecazione di colui, il quale amareggiato di cuore ti maledice, sarà esaudita, ed esaudirallo colui, che lo creò.
7 Gain the love of the community, in the presence of the great bow your head.	7 Sii affabile alla turba dei poveri, e umiliati di cuore dinanzi a' seniori, e abbassa la testa dinanzi ai grandi.
8 To the poor lend an ear, and courteously return the greeting.	8 Porgi senza annoiarti l'orecchio al povero, e soddisfa al tuo debito; e rispondi a lui con benignità, e mansuetudine.
9 Save the oppressed from the hand of the oppressor, and do not be mean-spirited in your judgements.	9 Libera dalla man del superbo colui, che soffre l'ingiuria, e non sia ciò gravoso all'anima tua.
10 Be like a father to the fatherless and as good as a husband to their mothers. And you wil be like a childto the Most High, who will love you more than your own mother does.	10 Nel giudicare sii misericordioso qual padre verso i pupilli, e tieni luogo di marito alla loro madre:
11 Wisdom brings up her own children and cares for those who seek her.	11 E tu sarai qual ubbidiente figliuol dell'Altissimo; e questi sarà buono con te più di una madre.
12 Whoever loves her loves life, those who seek her early wil be fil ed with joy.	12 La sapienza a' suoi figliuoli infonde la vita; e accoglie quei, che la cercano, e va loro innanzi nella via della giustizia.
13 Whoever possesses her wil inherit honour, and wherever he walks the Lord will bless him.	13 E chi ama lei, ama la vita, e quelli, che di gran mattino ne vanno in traccia, goderanno di sua soavità.
14 Those who serve her minister to the Holy One, and the Lord loves those who love her.	14 Quelli, che ne avranno il possesso recheranno la vita, e dovunque ella entrerà, vi sarà la benedizione di Dio.
15 Whoever obeys her rules the nations, whoever pays attention to her dwells secure.	15 Chi serve a lei, presta ossequio al Santo; e gli amatori di lei son amati da Dio.
16 If he trusts himself to her he wil inherit her, and his descendants will remain in possession of her;	16 Colui, che la ascolta, sarà giudice delle nazioni, e chi in lei tien fiso lo sguardo, riposerà senza sospetto.
17 for though she takes him at first through winding ways, bringing fear and faintness on him, trying himout with her discipline til she can trust him, and testing him with her ordeals,	17 Se egli si fida di lei, avralla per suo retaggio, e saranne confermato e figliuoli il possesso.
18 she then comes back to him on the straight road, makes him happy and reveals her secrets to him.	18 Perocché ella cammina con lui per mezzo alle tentazioni, e da principio lo prova.
19 If he goes astray, however, she abandons him and leaves him to his own destruction.	19 Ella manda sopra di lui timori, e paure per esercitarlo, e lo affligge colla sferza di sua dottrina fino a tanto, che ella abbia fatto sperimento de' suoi pensieri, onde si fidi del cuor di lui.
20 Take circumstances into account and beware of evil, and have no cause to be ashamed of yourself;	20 Ed ella gli darà fermo stato, e appianerà a lui la strada, e daragli allegrezza.
21 for there is a shame that leads to sin and a shame that is honourable and gracious.	21 E svelerà a lui i suoi arcani; e lo arricchirà di un tesoro di scienza, e di cognizione della giustizia.
22 Do not be too severe on yourself, do not let shame lead you to ruin.	22 Ma se egli uscirà di strada, ella lo abbandonerà, e lo lascerà in potere del suo nemico.
23 Do not refrain from speaking when it will do good, and do not hide your wisdom;	23 Figliuolo bada al tempo, e schiva il male.
24 for your wisdom is made known by what you say, your erudition by the words you utter.	24 Per l'amor dell'anima tua non vergognarti di dire la verità.
25 Do not contradict the truth, rather blush for your own ignorance.	25 Perocché havvi un rossore, che tira seco il peccato; ed havvi un rossore, che tira seco la gloria, e la grazia.
26 Do not be ashamed to confess your sins, do not struggle against the current of the river.	26 Non aver riguardo chiccessia in tuo danno; e non mentire a spese dell'anima tua.
27 Do not grovel to the foolish, do not show partiality to the influential.	27 Non risparmiare il tuo prossimo nelle sue cadute:
28 Fight to the death for truth, and the Lord God wil war on your side.	28 E non rattener la parola nel tempo dì salute: non celare la tua sapienza quando ella dee farsi onore.
29 Do not be bold of tongue, yet idle and slack in deed;	29 Perocché la lingua è quella, che fa conoscere la sapienza; e il buon giudizio, e la scienza, e la dottrina si trova nelle parole dell'uom sensato: ma il suo forte consiste nelle opere di giustizia.
30 do not be like a lion at home, or cowardly towards your servants.	30 Non contraddire in verun modo alla parola di verità; ed abbi vergogna della bugia detta da te per ignoranza.
31 Do not let your hands be outstretched to receive, yet tight-fisted when the time comes to give back.	31 Non ti vergognare di confessare i tuoi peccati; ma non ti soggettare a verun uomo per far peccato.
	32 Non resistere in faccia al potente; non tentare di rompere l'impeto di una fiumana.
	33 Ma per la giustizia adopra tutte le tue forze in pro dell'anima tua, e sino a morte combatti per la giustizia, e Dio per te espugnerà i tuoi nemici.
	34 Non essere spedito di lingua, e poco buono, e lento nell'operare.
	35 Non essere in casa tua come un lione, con isbalordire i tuoi domestici, e opprimere quelli, cbe ti sono soggetti.
	36 Non sia la tua mano stesa a ricevere, e contratta a dare.
