Sirach 4

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 My child, do not refuse the poor a livelihood, do not tantalise the needy.	1 Figlio, non rifiutare al povero il necessario per la vita, non essere insensibile allo sguardo dei bisognosi.
2 Do not add to the sufferings of the hungry, do not bait anyone in distress.	2 Non rattristare chi ha fame, non esasperare chi è in difficoltà.
3 Do not aggravate a heart already angry, nor keep the destitute waiting for your alms.	3 Non turbare un cuore già esasperato, non negare un dono al bisognoso.
4 Do not repulse a hard-pressed beggar, nor turn your face from the poor.	4 Non respingere la supplica del povero, non distogliere lo sguardo dall’indigente.
5 Do not avert your eyes from the needy, give no one occasion to curse you;	5 Da chi ti chiede non distogliere lo sguardo, non dare a lui l’occasione di maledirti,
6 for if someone curses you in distress, his Maker will give ear to the imprecation.	6 perché se egli ti maledice nell’amarezza del cuore, il suo creatore ne esaudirà la preghiera.
7 Gain the love of the community, in the presence of the great bow your head.	7 Fatti amare dalla comunità e davanti a un grande abbassa il capo.
8 To the poor lend an ear, and courteously return the greeting.	8 Porgi il tuo orecchio al povero e rendigli un saluto di pace con mitezza.
9 Save the oppressed from the hand of the oppressor, and do not be mean-spirited in your judgements.	9 Strappa l’oppresso dal potere dell’oppressore e non essere meschino quando giudichi.
10 Be like a father to the fatherless and as good as a husband to their mothers. And you wil be like a childto the Most High, who will love you more than your own mother does.	10 Sii come un padre per gli orfani, come un marito per la loro madre: sarai come un figlio dell’Altissimo, ed egli ti amerà più di tua madre.
11 Wisdom brings up her own children and cares for those who seek her.	11 La sapienza esalta i suoi figli e si prende cura di quanti la cercano.
12 Whoever loves her loves life, those who seek her early wil be fil ed with joy.	12 Chi ama la sapienza ama la vita, chi la cerca di buon mattino sarà ricolmo di gioia.
13 Whoever possesses her wil inherit honour, and wherever he walks the Lord will bless him.	13 Chi la possiede erediterà la gloria; dovunque vada, il Signore lo benedirà.
14 Those who serve her minister to the Holy One, and the Lord loves those who love her.	14 Chi la venera rende culto a Dio, che è il Santo, e il Signore ama coloro che la amano.
15 Whoever obeys her rules the nations, whoever pays attention to her dwells secure.	15 Chi l’ascolta giudicherà le nazioni, chi le presta attenzione vivrà tranquillo.
16 If he trusts himself to her he wil inherit her, and his descendants will remain in possession of her;	16 Chi confida in lei l’avrà in eredità, i suoi discendenti ne conserveranno il possesso.
17 for though she takes him at first through winding ways, bringing fear and faintness on him, trying himout with her discipline til she can trust him, and testing him with her ordeals,	17 Dapprima lo condurrà per vie tortuose, gli incuterà timore e paura, lo tormenterà con la sua disciplina, finché possa fidarsi di lui e lo abbia provato con i suoi decreti;
18 she then comes back to him on the straight road, makes him happy and reveals her secrets to him.	18 ma poi lo ricondurrà su una via diritta e lo allieterà, gli manifesterà i propri segreti.
19 If he goes astray, however, she abandons him and leaves him to his own destruction.	19 Se invece egli batte una falsa strada, lo lascerà andare e lo consegnerà alla sua rovina.
20 Take circumstances into account and beware of evil, and have no cause to be ashamed of yourself;	20 Tieni conto del momento e guàrdati dal male, e non avere vergogna di te stesso.
21 for there is a shame that leads to sin and a shame that is honourable and gracious.	21 C’è una vergogna che porta al peccato e c’è una vergogna che porta gloria e grazia.
22 Do not be too severe on yourself, do not let shame lead you to ruin.	22 Non usare riguardi a tuo danno e non arrossire a tua rovina.
23 Do not refrain from speaking when it will do good, and do not hide your wisdom;	23 Non astenerti dal parlare quando è necessario e non nascondere la tua sapienza per bellezza,
24 for your wisdom is made known by what you say, your erudition by the words you utter.	24 poiché dalla parola si riconosce la sapienza e l’istruzione dai detti della lingua.
25 Do not contradict the truth, rather blush for your own ignorance.	25 Non contrastare la verità, ma arrossisci della tua ignoranza.
26 Do not be ashamed to confess your sins, do not struggle against the current of the river.	26 Non vergognarti di confessare i tuoi peccati e non opporti alla corrente di un fiume.
27 Do not grovel to the foolish, do not show partiality to the influential.	27 Non sottometterti a un uomo stolto, non essere parziale a favore di un potente.
28 Fight to the death for truth, and the Lord God wil war on your side.	28 Lotta sino alla morte per la verità, il Signore Dio combatterà per te.
29 Do not be bold of tongue, yet idle and slack in deed;	29 Non essere arrogante nel tuo linguaggio, fiacco e indolente nelle opere.
30 do not be like a lion at home, or cowardly towards your servants.	30 Non essere come un leone nella tua casa e capriccioso con i tuoi servi.
31 Do not let your hands be outstretched to receive, yet tight-fisted when the time comes to give back.	31 La tua mano non sia tesa per prendere e poi chiusa nel restituire.
