Sirach 4

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 My child, do not refuse the poor a livelihood, do not tantalise the needy.	1 Hijo mío, no prives al pobre de su sustento ni hagas languidecer los ojos del indigente.
2 Do not add to the sufferings of the hungry, do not bait anyone in distress.	2 No hagas sufrir al que tiene hambre ni irrites al que está en la miseria.
3 Do not aggravate a heart already angry, nor keep the destitute waiting for your alms.	3 No exasperes más aún al que está irritado ni hagas esperar tu don al que lo necesita.
4 Do not repulse a hard-pressed beggar, nor turn your face from the poor.	4 No rechaces la súplica del afligido ni apartes tu rostro del pobre.
5 Do not avert your eyes from the needy, give no one occasion to curse you;	5 No apartes tus ojos del indigente ni des lugar a que alguien te maldiga:
6 for if someone curses you in distress, his Maker will give ear to the imprecation.	6 porque si te maldice con amargura en el alma, su Creador escuchará su plegaria.
7 Gain the love of the community, in the presence of the great bow your head.	7 Procura hacerte amar de la asamblea y ante un poderoso, inclina la cabeza.
8 To the poor lend an ear, and courteously return the greeting.	8 Vuelve tu oído hacia el pobre y devuélvele el saludo con dulzura.
9 Save the oppressed from the hand of the oppressor, and do not be mean-spirited in your judgements.	9 Arranca al oprimido de las manos del opresor y no te acobardes al hacer justicia.
10 Be like a father to the fatherless and as good as a husband to their mothers. And you wil be like a childto the Most High, who will love you more than your own mother does.	10 Sé un padre para los huérfanos y como un marido para su madre: así serás como un hijo del Altísimo y él te amará más que tu propia madre.
11 Wisdom brings up her own children and cares for those who seek her.	11 La sabiduría encumbra a sus hijos y cuida de aquellos que la buscan.
12 Whoever loves her loves life, those who seek her early wil be fil ed with joy.	12 El que la ama, ama la vida, y los que la buscan ardientemente serán colmados de gozo.
13 Whoever possesses her wil inherit honour, and wherever he walks the Lord will bless him.	13 El que la posee heredará la gloria, y dondequiera que vaya, el Señor lo bendecirá.
14 Those who serve her minister to the Holy One, and the Lord loves those who love her.	14 Los que la sirven rinden culto al Santo y los que la aman son amados por el Señor.
15 Whoever obeys her rules the nations, whoever pays attention to her dwells secure.	15 El que la escucha juzgará a las naciones y el que le presta atención habitará seguro.
16 If he trusts himself to her he wil inherit her, and his descendants will remain in possession of her;	16 El que confía en ella la recibirá en herencia y sus descendientes también la poseerán.
17 for though she takes him at first through winding ways, bringing fear and faintness on him, trying himout with her discipline til she can trust him, and testing him with her ordeals,	17 Al comienzo, ella lo conducirá por un camino sinuoso, le infundirá temor y estremecimiento y lo hará sufrir con su disciplina, hasta que tenga confianza en él y lo haya probado con sus exigencias.
18 she then comes back to him on the straight road, makes him happy and reveals her secrets to him.	18 Después, volverá a él por el camino recto, lo alegrará y le revelará sus secretos.
19 If he goes astray, however, she abandons him and leaves him to his own destruction.	19 Si él se desvía, ella lo abandonará y lo dejará librado a su propia caída.
20 Take circumstances into account and beware of evil, and have no cause to be ashamed of yourself;	20 Ten en cuenta el momento y cuídate del mal, y no te avergüences de ti mismo.
21 for there is a shame that leads to sin and a shame that is honourable and gracious.	21 Porque hay una vergüenza que lleva al pecado, y hay otra vergüenza que es gloria y gracia.
22 Do not be too severe on yourself, do not let shame lead you to ruin.	22 No te perjudiques por tener en cuenta a los demás, y que la vergüenza no provoque tu caída.
23 Do not refrain from speaking when it will do good, and do not hide your wisdom;	23 No dejes de hablar cuando sea necesario, ni escondas tu sabiduría.
24 for your wisdom is made known by what you say, your erudition by the words you utter.	24 Porque la sabiduría se reconoce en las palabras, y la instrucción, en la manera de hablar.
25 Do not contradict the truth, rather blush for your own ignorance.	25 No digas nada contrario a la verdad y avergüénzate de tu falta de instrucción.
26 Do not be ashamed to confess your sins, do not struggle against the current of the river.	26 No tengas vergüenza de confesar tus pecados ni pretendas oponerte a la corriente de un río.
27 Do not grovel to the foolish, do not show partiality to the influential.	27 No te rebajes ante un hombre necio ni seas parcial en favor del poderoso.
28 Fight to the death for truth, and the Lord God wil war on your side.	28 Lucha hasta la muerte por la verdad, y el Señor Dios luchará por ti.
29 Do not be bold of tongue, yet idle and slack in deed;	29 No seas atrevido con la lengua, ni perezoso y descuidado en tus acciones.
30 do not be like a lion at home, or cowardly towards your servants.	30 No seas como un león dentro de tu casa, y cobarde entre tus servidores.
31 Do not let your hands be outstretched to receive, yet tight-fisted when the time comes to give back.	31 No tengas la mano abierta para recibir y cerrada cuando hay que dar.
