Sirach 4

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 My child, do not refuse the poor a livelihood, do not tantalise the needy.	1 Hijo, no prives al pobre del sustento, ni dejes en suspenso los ojos suplicantes.
2 Do not add to the sufferings of the hungry, do not bait anyone in distress.	2 No entristezcas al que tiene hambre, no exasperes al hombre en su indigencia.
3 Do not aggravate a heart already angry, nor keep the destitute waiting for your alms.	3 No te ensañes con el corazón exasperado, no hagas esperar la dádiva al mendigo.
4 Do not repulse a hard-pressed beggar, nor turn your face from the poor.	4 No rechaces al suplicante atribulado, ni apartes tu rostro del pobre.
5 Do not avert your eyes from the needy, give no one occasion to curse you;	5 No apartes del mendigo tus ojos, ni des a nadie ocasión de maldecirte.
6 for if someone curses you in distress, his Maker will give ear to the imprecation.	6 Pues si maldice en la amargura de su alma, su Hacedor escuchará su imprecación.
7 Gain the love of the community, in the presence of the great bow your head.	7 Hazte querer de la asamblea, ante un grande baja tu cabeza.
8 To the poor lend an ear, and courteously return the greeting.	8 Inclina al pobre tus oídos, responde a su saludo de paz con dulzura.
9 Save the oppressed from the hand of the oppressor, and do not be mean-spirited in your judgements.	9 Arranca al oprimido de manos del opresor, y a la hora de juzgar no seas pusilánime.
10 Be like a father to the fatherless and as good as a husband to their mothers. And you wil be like a childto the Most High, who will love you more than your own mother does.	10 Sé para los huérfanos un padre, haz con su madre lo que hizo su marido. Y serás como un hijo del Altísimo; él te amará más que tu madre.
11 Wisdom brings up her own children and cares for those who seek her.	11 La sabiduría a sus hijos exalta, y cuida de los que la buscan.
12 Whoever loves her loves life, those who seek her early wil be fil ed with joy.	12 El que la ama, ama la vida, los que en su busca madrugan serán colmados de contento.
13 Whoever possesses her wil inherit honour, and wherever he walks the Lord will bless him.	13 El que la posee tendrá gloria en herencia, dondequiera que él entre, le bendecirá el Señor.
14 Those who serve her minister to the Holy One, and the Lord loves those who love her.	14 Los que la sirven, rinden culto al Santo, a los que la aman, los ama el Señor.
15 Whoever obeys her rules the nations, whoever pays attention to her dwells secure.	15 El que la escucha, juzgará a las naciones, el que la sigue, su tienda montará en seguro.
16 If he trusts himself to her he wil inherit her, and his descendants will remain in possession of her;	16 Si se confía a ella, la poseerá en herencia, y su posteridad seguirá poseyéndola.
17 for though she takes him at first through winding ways, bringing fear and faintness on him, trying himout with her discipline til she can trust him, and testing him with her ordeals,	17 Pues, al principio, le llevará por recovecos, miedo y pavor hará caer sobre él, con su disciplina le atormentará hasta que tenga confianza en su alma y le pondrá a prueba con sus preceptos,
18 she then comes back to him on the straight road, makes him happy and reveals her secrets to him.	18 mas luego le volverá al camino recto, le regocijará y le revelará sus secretos.
19 If he goes astray, however, she abandons him and leaves him to his own destruction.	19 Que si él se descarría, le abandonará, y le dejará a merced de su propia caída.
20 Take circumstances into account and beware of evil, and have no cause to be ashamed of yourself;	20 Ten en cuenta el momento y guárdate del mal, no te avergüences de ti mismo.
21 for there is a shame that leads to sin and a shame that is honourable and gracious.	21 Porque hay una vergüenza que conduce al pecado, y otra vergüenza hay que es gloria y gracia.
22 Do not be too severe on yourself, do not let shame lead you to ruin.	22 No tengas miramientos en contra de ti mismo, y no mudes de color por tu caída.
23 Do not refrain from speaking when it will do good, and do not hide your wisdom;	23 No contengas la palabra cuando pueda salvar, y no escondas tu sabiduría.
24 for your wisdom is made known by what you say, your erudition by the words you utter.	24 Que la sabiduría se da a conocer en la palabra, y la educación en los discursos de la lengua.
25 Do not contradict the truth, rather blush for your own ignorance.	25 A la verdad no contradigas, mas ruborízate de no estar educado.
26 Do not be ashamed to confess your sins, do not struggle against the current of the river.	26 No te avergüences de confesar tus pecados, no te opongas a la corriente del río.
27 Do not grovel to the foolish, do not show partiality to the influential.	27 No te aplanes ante el hombre insensato, ni tengas miramiento al poderoso.
28 Fight to the death for truth, and the Lord God wil war on your side.	28 Hasta la muerte por la verdad combate, y el Señor Dios peleará por ti.
29 Do not be bold of tongue, yet idle and slack in deed;	29 No seas atrevido con tu lengua, ni perezoso y negligente en tus obras.
30 do not be like a lion at home, or cowardly towards your servants.	30 No seas un león en tu casa y un corbade entre tus servidores.
31 Do not let your hands be outstretched to receive, yet tight-fisted when the time comes to give back.	31 No sea tu mano abierta para recibir, y cerrada para dar.
