Sirach 27

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Many have sinned for the sake of profit, one who hopes to be rich must turn a blind eye.	1 Beaucoup ont péché par amour du gain; qui cherche à s’enrichir ne cherche plus à voir.
2 A peg wil stick in the joint between two stones, and sin wil wedge itself between sel ing and buying.	2 Comme un piquet s’enfonce entre deux pierres jointes, ainsi s’installe le péché entre la vente et l’achat.
3 Whoever does not firmly hold to the fear of the Lord, his house wil soon be overthrown.	3 Qui ne s’attache pas fermement à la crainte du Seigneur, sa maison sera bientôt renversée.
4 In a shaken sieve the rubbish is left behind, so too the defects of a person appear in speech.	4 On retrouve les saletés dans le crible après qu’on l’a secoué; de même les défauts de l’homme dans ses discours.
5 The kiln tests the work of the potter, the test of a person is in conversation.	5 Le four sera l’épreuve pour les vases de terre; pour un homme, ce sera sa façon de raisonner.
6 The orchard where the tree grows is judged by its fruit, similarly words betray what a person feels.	6 Les fruits de l’arbre montreront s’il a été bien cultivé: de même les paroles d’un homme font connaître son fond.
7 Do not praise anyone who has not yet spoken, since this is where people are tested.	7 Ne fais l’éloge de personne avant qu’il ne se soit exprimé: pour tout homme c’est l’épreuve.
8 If you pursue virtue, you will attain it and put it on like a festal gown.	8 Si tu poursuis la justice, tu l’atteindras; tu t’en revêtiras comme d’un manteau de fête.
9 Birds consort with their kind, truth comes home to those who practise it.	9 Les oiseaux font leur nid auprès de leurs semblables, la vérité retourne à ceux qui la pratiquent.
10 The lion lies in wait for its prey, so does sin for those who do wrong.	10 Le lion guette sa proie, et le péché de même ceux qui font le mal.
11 The conversation of the devout is wisdom at all times, but the fool is as changeable as the moon.	11 La conversation d’un homme de Dieu a toujours sa sagesse, l’insensé au contraire est changeant comme la lune.
12 When visiting stupid people, choose the right moment, but among the thoughtful take your time.	12 Chez ceux qui n’entendent pas, sois avare de ton temps, donne-le largement à ceux qui réfléchissent.
13 The conversation of fools is disgusting, raucous their laughter in their sinful pleasures.	13 La conversation des sots est énervante, il leur faut des obscénités pour rire.
14 The talk of hard-swearing people makes your hair stand on end, their brawling makes you stop yourears.	14 Un langage plein de jurons met les nerfs en boule, ce genre de dispute fait se boucher les oreilles.
15 A quarrel between the proud leads to bloodshed, and their insults are embarrassing to hear.	15 Une querelle d’orgueilleux, et le sang coule; leurs injures déjà font mal à entendre.
16 A betrayer of secrets forfeits al trust and wil never find the kind of friend he wants.	16 Qui révèle des secrets perd son crédit, il ne trouvera plus d’amis selon son cœur.
17 Be fond of a friend and keep faith with him, but if you have betrayed his secrets, do not go after himany more;	17 Aime ton ami et reste-lui fidèle; si tu as révélé ses secrets, ne lui cours plus après;
18 for, as one destroys a person by kil ing him, so you have kil ed your neighbour's friendship,	18 c’est comme si tu avais perdu l’un de tes proches: son amitié pour toi est morte.
19 and as you let a bird slip through your fingers, so you have let your friend go, and wil not catch him.	19 Tu as laissé l’oiseau s’échapper de ta main: ton ami est parti, inutile de partir en chasse.
20 Do not go after him -- he is far away, he has fled like a gazel e from the snare.	20 Ne le poursuis pas: comme la gazelle qui se dégage du filet, il a pris ses distances.
21 For a wound can be bandaged and abuse forgiven, but for the betrayer of a secret there is no hope.	21 On peut bander une blessure, se réconcilier après les injures, mais avoir révélé des secrets, c’est sans espoir.
22 Someone with a sly wink is plotting mischief, no one can dissuade him from it.	22 Celui qui cligne de l’œil complote le mal, et personne ne l’en détournera.
23 Honey-tongued to your face, he is lost in admiration at your words; but behind your back he has otherthings to say, and turns your words into a stumbling-block.	23 En ta présence sa bouche est mielleuse, il admire tout ce que tu dis, mais ensuite il parle autrement et il travestit tes paroles pour te perdre.
24 I have found many things to hate, but nothing as much as him, and the Lord hates him too.	24 Il y a bien des choses que je déteste, mais rien autant que lui: le Seigneur lui-même le déteste.
25 Whoever throws a stone in the air, throws it on to his own head; a treacherous blow cuts both ways.	25 Qui lance une pierre en l’air la lance sur sa propre tête, et qui porte un coup en traître sera blessé en retour.
26 The man who digs a pit falls into it, whoever sets a snare wil be caught by it.	26 Qui creuse une fosse y tombera, et qui tend un filet s’y fera prendre.
27 On anyone who does evil, evil wil recoil, without his knowing where it comes from.	27 À qui commet des actions mauvaises elles reviendront, et de là où il ne l’attend pas.
28 Sarcasm and abuse are the mark of the arrogant, but vengeance lies in wait like a lion for such a one.	28 Les orgueilleux sont forts pour la moquerie et l’insulte, mais la justice les attend comme un lion à l’affût.
29 The trap will close on all who rejoice in the downfal of the devout, and pain wil eat them up beforethey die.	29 Ceux qui prennent plaisir à faire tomber les fidèles, seront pris au filet. La douleur fera d’eux sa proie avant même qu’ils ne meurent.
30 Resentment and anger, these are foul things too, and a sinner is a master at them both.	30 Rancune et colère, voilà encore deux choses abominables où le pécheur excelle.
