1 Listen then, kings, and understand; rulers of remotest lands, take warning;	1 Val meglio la sapienza che la forza, de l’uomo prudente più che il robusto.
2 hear this, you who govern great populations, taking pride in your hosts of subject nations!	2 Ascoltate adunque, o re, e intendete: imparate, o voi che giudicate i confini della terra.
3 For sovereignty is given to you by the Lord and power by the Most High, who will himself probe youracts and scrutinise your intentions.	3 Porgete orecchio, voi che dominate le folle, e vi compiacete delle masse di popoli.
4 If therefore, as servants of his kingdom, you have not ruled justly nor observed the law, nor fol owed thewil of God,	4 Dal Signore vi fu dato il dominio e l’impero dall’Altissimo; il quale esaminerà le vostre opere e scruterà i pensieri.
5 he wil fal on you swiftly and terribly. On the highly placed a ruthless judgement falls;	5 Perchè, ministri del suo regno, non avete governato rettamente, nè avete osservato la legge di giustizia, nè secondo il volere di Dio avete camminato.
6 the lowly are pardoned, out of pity, but the mighty wil be mightily tormented.	6 Terribile e veloce e’ piomberà su voi; chè rigorosissimo giudizio sarà fatto di quei che stanno in alto.
7 For the Lord of al does not cower before anyone, he does not stand in awe of greatness, since hehimself has made small and great and provides for al alike;	7 Al tapino invero si usa misericordia, ma i potenti saranno potentemente puniti!
8 but a searching trial awaits those who wield power.	8 Perchè non indietreggerà dinanzi a persona il Signore di tutti, nè avrà soggezione della grandezza di nessuno; chè il grande e il piccolo gli ha fatti lui e ha cura ugualmente di tutti.
9 So, monarchs, my words are meant for you, so that you may learn wisdom and not fal into error;	9 Ma ai potenti sovrasta più rigoroso giudizio.
10 for those who in holiness observe holy things will be adjudged holy, and, accepting instruction fromthem, wil find their defence in them.	10 A voi pertanto, o re, [son rivolte] le mie parole, perchè impariate la sapienza e non cediate.
11 Set your heart, therefore, on what I have to say, listen with a wil , and you wil be instructed.	11 Coloro infatti che osservano giustamente le cose giuste, saran giustificati, e quei che le avranno imparate, troveranno come rispondere [a propria difesa].
12 Wisdom is bril iant, she never fades. By those who love her, she is readily seen, by those who seekher, she is readily found.	12 Abbiate dunque bramosia delle mie parole, amatele [e consideratele] e sarete ammaestrati.
13 She anticipates those who desire her by making herself known first.	13 Splendida e immarcescibile è la sapienza, e facilmente scorta da coloro che l’amano, e trovata da quei che la cercano.
14 Whoever gets up early to seek her will have no trouble but wil find her sitting at the door.	14 Previene [anzi] quei che là bramano, col mostrarsi loro la prima.
15 Meditating on her is understanding in its perfect form, and anyone keeping awake for her will soon befree from care.	15 Chi sta su di buon mattino in cerca di lei, non avrà da faticare, chè la troverà seduta alla sua porta.
16 For she herself searches everywhere for those who are worthy of her, benevolently appearing to them on their ways, anticipating their every thought.	16 Pensare ad essa è la perfezione del senno, e chi veglia a cagion sua, presto sarà sgombro da cure.
17 For Wisdom begins with the sincere desire for instruction, care for instruction means loving her,	17 Perchè ella stessa va intorno cercando chi è degno di lei, e per le vie si mostra loro di buon grado, e in ogni [loro] divisamento si fa incontro ad essi.
18 loving her means keeping her laws, attention to her laws guarantees incorruptibility,	18 Il princìpio di essa invero, è una sincerissima brama d’istruzione,
19 and incorruptibility brings us near to God;	19 e la premura d’istruzione è amore; l'amore poi è osservanza delle sue leggi, e l'adempimento delle leggi è sicurezza d'immortalità;
20 the desire for Wisdom thus leads to sovereignty.	20 ma l'immortalità fa esser vicini a Dio:
21 If then thrones and sceptres delight you, monarchs of the nations, honour Wisdom, so that you mayreign for ever.	21 la brama pertanto della sapienza conduce al regno (eterno).
22 What Wisdom is and how she was born, I shal now explain; I shal hide no mysteries from you, butshall fol ow her steps from the outset of her origin, setting out what we know of her in ful light, without departingfrom the truth.	22 Se quindi vi compiacete di troni e di scettri, o dominatori di popoli, amate [e onorate] la sapienza, per regnare in eterno.
23 Blighting envy is no companion for me, for envy has nothing in common with Wisdom.	23 Amate la luce della sapienza, voi tutti che siete a capo di popoli.
24 In the greatest number of the wise lies the world's salvation, in a sagacious king the stability of apeople.	24 Cosa poi sia la sapienza e quale la sua origine, io [vi] annuncerò, nè vi nasconderò i misteri di Dio; ma dal principio della creazione andrò Investigando e porrò in luce la nozione di essa, e non dissimulerò la verità.
25 Learn, therefore, from my words; the gain will be yours.	25 Nè mi accompagnerò con l'invidia che si strugge, perchè questa non avrà parte nella sapienza.
	26 La moltitudine de' sapienti è salvezza del mondo, e un re prudente, stabilità del popolo.
	27 Lasciatevi dunque ammaestrare dalle mie parole, e ne avrete vantaggio.
