1 Listen then, kings, and understand; rulers of remotest lands, take warning;	1 Ascoltate dunque, o re, e cercate di comprendere; imparate, o governanti di tutta la terra.
2 hear this, you who govern great populations, taking pride in your hosts of subject nations!	2 Porgete l’orecchio, voi dominatori di popoli, che siete orgogliosi di comandare su molte nazioni.
3 For sovereignty is given to you by the Lord and power by the Most High, who will himself probe youracts and scrutinise your intentions.	3 Dal Signore vi fu dato il potere e l’autorità dall’Altissimo; egli esaminerà le vostre opere e scruterà i vostri propositi:
4 If therefore, as servants of his kingdom, you have not ruled justly nor observed the law, nor fol owed thewil of God,	4 pur essendo ministri del suo regno, non avete governato rettamente né avete osservato la legge né vi siete comportati secondo il volere di Dio.
5 he wil fal on you swiftly and terribly. On the highly placed a ruthless judgement falls;	5 Terribile e veloce egli piomberà su di voi, poiché il giudizio è severo contro coloro che stanno in alto.
6 the lowly are pardoned, out of pity, but the mighty wil be mightily tormented.	6 Gli ultimi infatti meritano misericordia, ma i potenti saranno vagliati con rigore.
7 For the Lord of al does not cower before anyone, he does not stand in awe of greatness, since hehimself has made small and great and provides for al alike;	7 Il Signore dell’universo non guarderà in faccia a nessuno, non avrà riguardi per la grandezza, perché egli ha creato il piccolo e il grande e a tutti provvede in egual modo.
8 but a searching trial awaits those who wield power.	8 Ma sui dominatori incombe un’indagine inflessibile.
9 So, monarchs, my words are meant for you, so that you may learn wisdom and not fal into error;	9 Pertanto a voi, o sovrani, sono dirette le mie parole, perché impariate la sapienza e non cadiate in errore.
10 for those who in holiness observe holy things will be adjudged holy, and, accepting instruction fromthem, wil find their defence in them.	10 Chi custodisce santamente le cose sante sarà riconosciuto santo, e quanti le avranno apprese vi troveranno una difesa.
11 Set your heart, therefore, on what I have to say, listen with a wil , and you wil be instructed.	11 Bramate, pertanto, le mie parole, desideratele e ne sarete istruiti.
12 Wisdom is bril iant, she never fades. By those who love her, she is readily seen, by those who seekher, she is readily found.	12 La sapienza è splendida e non sfiorisce, facilmente si lascia vedere da coloro che la amano e si lascia trovare da quelli che la cercano.
13 She anticipates those who desire her by making herself known first.	13 Nel farsi conoscere previene coloro che la desiderano.
14 Whoever gets up early to seek her will have no trouble but wil find her sitting at the door.	14 Chi si alza di buon mattino per cercarla non si affaticherà, la troverà seduta alla sua porta.
15 Meditating on her is understanding in its perfect form, and anyone keeping awake for her will soon befree from care.	15 Riflettere su di lei, infatti, è intelligenza perfetta, chi veglia a causa sua sarà presto senza affanni;
16 For she herself searches everywhere for those who are worthy of her, benevolently appearing to them on their ways, anticipating their every thought.	16 poiché lei stessa va in cerca di quelli che sono degni di lei, appare loro benevola per le strade e in ogni progetto va loro incontro.
17 For Wisdom begins with the sincere desire for instruction, care for instruction means loving her,	17 Suo principio più autentico è il desiderio di istruzione, l’anelito per l’istruzione è amore,
18 loving her means keeping her laws, attention to her laws guarantees incorruptibility,	18 l’amore per lei è osservanza delle sue leggi, il rispetto delle leggi è garanzia di incorruttibilità
19 and incorruptibility brings us near to God;	19 e l’incorruttibilità rende vicini a Dio.
20 the desire for Wisdom thus leads to sovereignty.	20 Dunque il desiderio della sapienza innalza al regno.
21 If then thrones and sceptres delight you, monarchs of the nations, honour Wisdom, so that you mayreign for ever.	21 Se dunque, dominatori di popoli, vi compiacete di troni e di scettri, onorate la sapienza, perché possiate regnare sempre.
22 What Wisdom is and how she was born, I shal now explain; I shal hide no mysteries from you, butshall fol ow her steps from the outset of her origin, setting out what we know of her in ful light, without departingfrom the truth.	22 Annuncerò che cos’è la sapienza e com’è nata, non vi terrò nascosti i suoi segreti, ma fin dalle origini ne ricercherò le tracce, metterò in chiaro la conoscenza di lei, non mi allontanerò dalla verità.
23 Blighting envy is no companion for me, for envy has nothing in common with Wisdom.	23 Non mi farò compagno di chi si consuma d’invidia, perché costui non avrà nulla in comune con la sapienza.
24 In the greatest number of the wise lies the world's salvation, in a sagacious king the stability of apeople.	24 Il gran numero di sapienti è salvezza per il mondo, un re prudente è la sicurezza del popolo.
25 Learn, therefore, from my words; the gain will be yours.	25 Lasciatevi dunque ammaestrare dalle mie parole e ne trarrete profitto.
