Wisdom 6

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Listen then, kings, and understand; rulers of remotest lands, take warning;	1 Ecoutez donc, rois, et comprenez! Instruisez-vous, juges des confins de la terre!
2 hear this, you who govern great populations, taking pride in your hosts of subject nations!	2 Prêtez l'oreille, vous qui dominez sur la multitude, qui vous enorgueillissez de foules de nations!
3 For sovereignty is given to you by the Lord and power by the Most High, who will himself probe youracts and scrutinise your intentions.	3 Car c'est le Seigneur qui vous a donné la domination et le Très-Haut le pouvoir, c'est lui quiexaminera vos oeuvres et scrutera vos desseins.
4 If therefore, as servants of his kingdom, you have not ruled justly nor observed the law, nor fol owed thewil of God,	4 Si donc, étant serviteurs de son royaume, vous n'avez pas jugé droitement, ni observé la loi, ni suivila volonté de Dieu,
5 he wil fal on you swiftly and terribly. On the highly placed a ruthless judgement falls;	5 il fondra sur vous d'une manière terrifiante et rapide. Un jugement inexorable s'exerce en effet surles gens haut placés;
6 the lowly are pardoned, out of pity, but the mighty wil be mightily tormented.	6 au petit, par pitié, on pardonne, mais les puissants seront examinés puissamment.
7 For the Lord of al does not cower before anyone, he does not stand in awe of greatness, since hehimself has made small and great and provides for al alike;	7 Car le Maître de tous ne recule devant personne, la grandeur ne lui en impose pas; petits et grands,c'est lui qui les a faits et de tous il prend un soin pareil,
8 but a searching trial awaits those who wield power.	8 mais une enquête sévère attend les forts.
9 So, monarchs, my words are meant for you, so that you may learn wisdom and not fal into error;	9 C'est donc à vous, souverains, que s'adressent mes paroles, pour que vous appreniez la sagesse etévitiez les fautes;
10 for those who in holiness observe holy things will be adjudged holy, and, accepting instruction fromthem, wil find their defence in them.	10 car ceux qui observent saintement les choses saintes seront reconnus saints, et ceux qui s'enlaissent instruire y trouveront leur défense.
11 Set your heart, therefore, on what I have to say, listen with a wil , and you wil be instructed.	11 Désirez donc mes paroles, aspirez à elles et vous serez instruits.
12 Wisdom is bril iant, she never fades. By those who love her, she is readily seen, by those who seekher, she is readily found.	12 La Sagesse est brillante, elle ne se flétrit pas. Elle se laisse facilement contempler par ceux quil'aiment, elle se laisse trouver par ceux qui la cherchent.
13 She anticipates those who desire her by making herself known first.	13 Elle prévient ceux qui la désirent en se faisant connaître la première.
14 Whoever gets up early to seek her will have no trouble but wil find her sitting at the door.	14 Qui se lève tôt pour la chercher n'aura pas à peiner: il la trouvera assise à sa porte.
15 Meditating on her is understanding in its perfect form, and anyone keeping awake for her will soon befree from care.	15 Méditer sur elle est en effet la perfection de l'intelligence, et qui veille à cause d'elle sera viteexempt de soucis.
16 For she herself searches everywhere for those who are worthy of her, benevolently appearing to them on their ways, anticipating their every thought.	16 Car ceux qui sont dignes d'elle, elle-même va partout les chercher et sur les sentiers elle leurapparaît avec bienveillance, à chaque pensée elle va au-devant d'eux.
17 For Wisdom begins with the sincere desire for instruction, care for instruction means loving her,	17 Car son commencement, c'est le désir très vrai de l'instruction, le souci de l'instruction, c'estl'amour,
18 loving her means keeping her laws, attention to her laws guarantees incorruptibility,	18 l'amour, c'est l'observation de ses lois, l'attention aux lois, c'est la garantie de l'incorruptibilité,
19 and incorruptibility brings us near to God;	19 et l'incorruptibilité fait qu'on est près de Dieu;
20 the desire for Wisdom thus leads to sovereignty.	20 ainsi le désir de la Sagesse conduit à la royauté.
21 If then thrones and sceptres delight you, monarchs of the nations, honour Wisdom, so that you mayreign for ever.	21 Si donc trônes et sceptres vous plaisent, souverains des peuples, honorez la Sagesse, afin de régnerà jamais.
22 What Wisdom is and how she was born, I shal now explain; I shal hide no mysteries from you, butshall fol ow her steps from the outset of her origin, setting out what we know of her in ful light, without departingfrom the truth.	22 Ce qu'est la Sagesse et comment elle est née, je vais l'exposer; je ne vous cacherai pas lesmystères, mais je suivrai ses traces depuis le début de son origine, je mettrai sa connaissance en pleine lumière,sans m'écarter de la vérité.
23 Blighting envy is no companion for me, for envy has nothing in common with Wisdom.	23 Oh! je ne ferai pas route avec l'envie desséchante: elle n'a rien de commun avec la Sagesse.
24 In the greatest number of the wise lies the world's salvation, in a sagacious king the stability of apeople.	24 Une multitude de sages est le salut du monde, un roi sensé fait la stabilité du peuple.
25 Learn, therefore, from my words; the gain will be yours.	25 Laissez-vous donc instruire par mes paroles: vous y trouverez profit.
