NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Whoever is stiff-necked under reproof wil be suddenly and irremediably broken.1 The man who remains stiff-necked and hates rebuke will be crushed suddenly beyond cure.
When the upright are on the increase, the people rejoice; when the wicked are in power, the peoplegroan.2 When the just prevail, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people groan.
The lover of Wisdom makes his father glad, but the patron of prostitutes fritters his wealth away.3 He who loves wisdom makes his father glad, but he who consorts with harlots squanders his wealth.
A king gives a country stability by justice, an extortioner brings it to ruin.4 By justice a king gives stability to the land; but he who imposes heavy taxes ruins it.
Whoever flatters his companion spreads a net for his feet.5 The man who flatters his neighbor is spreading a net under his feet.
In the sin of the wicked lies a snare, but the upright exults and rejoices.6 The wicked man steps into a snare, but the just man runs on joyfully.
The upright understands the cause of the weak, the wicked has not the wit to understand it.7 The just man has a care for the rights of the poor; the wicked man has no such concern.
Scoffers set a city in ferment, but the wise moderate anger.8 Arrogant men set the city ablaze, but wise men calm the fury.
Let someone wise argue with a fool, anger and good humour alike wil be wasted.9 If a wise man disputes with a fool, he may rage or laugh but can have no peace.
The bloodthirsty hate the honest, but the upright seek them out.10 Bloodthirsty men hate the honest man, but the upright show concern for his life.
The fool blurts out every angry feeling, but the wise subdues and restrains them.11 The fool gives vent to all his anger; but by biding his time, the wise man calms it.
When a ruler listens to false reports, al his ministers wil be scoundrels.12 If a ruler listens to lying words, his servants all become wicked.
Poor and oppressor are found together, Yahweh gives light to the eyes of both.13 The poor and the oppressor have a common bond: the LORD gives light to the eyes of both.
The king who judges the weak with equity sees his throne set firm for ever.14 If a king is zealous for the rights of the poor, his throne stands firm forever.
The stick and the reprimand bestow wisdom, a young man left to himself brings shame on his mother.15 The rod of correction gives wisdom, but a boy left to his whims disgraces his mother.
When the wicked are on the increase, sin multiplies, but the upright wil witness their downfal .16 When the wicked prevail, crime increases; but their downfall the just will behold.
Correct your child, and he wil give you peace of mind; he will delight your soul.17 Correct your son, and he will bring you comfort, and give delight to your soul.
Where there is no vision the people get out of hand; happy are they who keep the law.18 Without prophecy the people become demoralized; but happy is he who keeps the law.
Not by words is a slave corrected: even if he understands, he will take no notice.19 By words no servant can be trained; for he understands what is said, but obeys not.
You see someone too ready of speech? There is more to be hoped for from a fool!20 Do you see a man hasty in his words? More can be hoped for from a fool!
If a slave is pampered from childhood, he wil prove ungrateful in the end.21 If a man pampers his servant from childhood, he will turn out to be stubborn.
The hot-head provokes disputes, someone in a rage commits al sorts of sins.22 An ill-tempered man stirs up disputes, and a hotheaded man is the cause of many sins.
Pride brings humiliation, whoever humbles himself will win honour.23 Man's pride causes his humiliation, but he who is humble of spirit obtains honor.
To hear the curse and disclose nothing is to share with the thief and to hate oneself.24 The accomplice of a thief is his own enemy: he hears himself put under a curse, yet discloses nothing.
To be afraid of human beings is a snare, whoever trusts in Yahweh is secure.25 The fear of man brings a snare, but he who trusts in the LORD is safe.
Many people seek a ruler's favour, but the rights of each come from Yahweh.26 Many curry favor with the ruler, but the rights of each are from the LORD.
Abhorrent to the upright is the sinful, abhorrent to the wicked is one whose way is straight.27 The evildoer is an abomination to the just, and he who walks uprightly is an abomination to the wicked.
