[Poem Of Asaph] God, why have you final y rejected us, your anger blazing against the flock you usedto pasture?1 Unto the end. May you not be corrupted. A Canticle Psalm of Asaph.
Remember the people you took to yourself long ago, your own tribe which you redeemed, and thisMount Zion where you came to live.2 We will confess to you, O God. We will confess, and we will call upon your name. We will describe your wonders.
Come up to these endless ruins! The enemy have sacked everything in the sanctuary;3 While I have time, I will judge justices.
your opponents made uproar in the place of assemblies, they fixed their emblems over the entrance,emblems4 The earth has been dissolved, with all who dwell in it. I have confirmed its pillars.
never known before. Their axes deep in the wood,5 I said to the iniquitous: “Do not act unjustly,” and to the offenders: “Do not exalt the horn.”
hacking at the panels, they battered them down with axe and pick;6 Do not exalt your horn on high. Do not speak iniquity against God.
they set fire to your sanctuary, profanely rased to the ground the dwel ing-place of your name.7 For it is neither from the east, nor from the west, nor before the desert mountains.
They said to themselves, 'Let us crush them at one stroke!' They burned down every sacred shrine inthe land.8 For God is judge. This one he humbles and that one he exalts.
We see no signs, no prophet any more, and none of us knows how long it wil last.9 For, in the hand of the Lord, there is a cup of undiluted wine, full of consternation. And he has tipped it from here to there. So, truly, its dregs have not been emptied. All the sinners of the earth will drink.
How much longer, God, will the enemy blaspheme? Is the enemy to insult your name for ever?10 But I will announce it in every age. I will sing to the God of Jacob.
Why hold back your hand, keep your right hand hidden in the folds of your robe?11 And I will break all the horns of sinners. And the horns of the just will be exalted.
Yet, God, my king from the first, author of saving acts throughout the earth,
by your power you split the sea in two, and smashed the heads of the monsters on the waters.
You crushed Leviathan's heads, gave him as food to the wild animals.
You released the springs and brooks, and turned primordial rivers into dry land.
Yours is the day and yours the night, you caused sun and light to exist,
you fixed all the boundaries of the earth, you created summer and winter.
Remember, Yahweh, the enemy's blasphemy, a foolish people insults your name.
Do not surrender your turtledove to the beast; do not forget for ever the life of your oppressed people.
Look to the covenant! Al the hiding-places of the land are ful , haunts of violence.
Do not let the downtrodden retreat in confusion, give the poor and needy cause to praise your name.
Arise, God, champion your own cause, remember how fools blaspheme you all day long!
Do not forget the shouting of your enemies, the ever-mounting uproar of your adversaries.
