1 Alexander of Macedon son of Philip had come from the land of Kittim and defeated Darius king of thePersians and Medes, whom he succeeded as ruler, at first of Hel as.	1 Ora, aconteceu que, já senhor da Grécia, Alexandre, filho de Filipe da Macedônia, oriundo da terra de Cetim, derrotou também Dario, rei dos persas e dos medos e reinou em seu lugar.
2 He undertook many campaigns, gained possession of many fortresses, and put the local kings todeath.	2 Empreendeu inúmeras guerras, apoderou-se de muitas cidades e matou muitos reis.
3 So he advanced to the ends of the earth, plundering nation after nation; the earth grew silent beforehim, and his ambitious heart swel ed with pride.	3 Avançou até os confins da terra e apoderou-se das riquezas de vários povos, e diante dele silenciou a terra. Tornando-se altivo, seu coração ensoberbeceu-se.
4 He assembled very powerful forces and subdued provinces, nations and princes, and they became histributaries.	4 Reuniu um imenso exército,
5 But the time came when Alexander took to his bed, in the knowledge that he was dying.	5 impôs seu poderio aos países, às nações e reis, e todos se tornaram seus tributários.
6 He summoned his officers, noblemen who had been brought up with him from his youth, and dividedhis kingdom among them while he was stil alive.	6 Enfim, adoeceu e viu que a morte se aproximava.

11 It was then that there emerged from Israel a set of renegades who led many people astray. 'Come,'they said, 'let us al y ourselves with the gentiles surrounding us, for since we separated ourselves from themmany misfortunes have overtaken us.'	11 Desses reis originou-se uma raiz de pecado: Antíoco Epífanes, filho do rei Antíoco, que havia estado em Roma, como refém, e que reinou no ano cento e trinta e sete do reino dos gregos.
12 This proposal proved acceptable,	12 Nessa época saíram também de Israel uns filhos perversos que seduziram a muitos outros, dizendo: Vamos e façamos alianças com os povos que nos cercam, porque, desde que nós nos separamos deles, caímos em infortúnios sem conta.
13 and a number of the people eagerly approached the king, who authorised them to practise thegentiles' observances.	13 Semelhante linguagem pareceu-lhes boa,
14 So they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem, such as the gentiles have,	14 e houve entre o povo quem se apressasse a ir ter com o rei, o qual concedeu a licença de adotarem os costumes pagãos.
15 disguised their circumcision, and abandoned the holy covenant, submitting to gentile rule as willingslaves of impiety.	15 Edificaram em Jerusalém um ginásio como os gentios, dissimularam os sinais da circuncisão, afastaram-se da aliança com Deus, para se unirem aos estrangeiros e venderam-se ao pecado.
16 Once Antiochus had seen his authority established, he determined to make himself king of Egypt andthe ruler of both kingdoms.	16 Quando seu reino lhe pareceu bem consolidado, concebeu Antíoco o desejo de possuir o Egito, a fim de reinar sobre dois reinos.
17 He invaded Egypt in massive strength, with chariots and elephants (and cavalry) and a large fleet.	17 Entrou, pois, no Egito com um poderoso exército, com carros, elefantes, cavalos e uma numerosa esquadra.
18 He engaged Ptolemy king of Egypt in battle, and Ptolemy turned back and fled before his advance,leaving many casualties.	18 Investiu contra Ptolomeu, rei do Egito, o qual, tomado de pânico, fugiu. Foram muitos os que sucumbiram sob seus golpes.
19 The fortified cities of Egypt were captured, and Antiochus plundered the country.	19 Tornou-se ele senhor das fortalezas do Egito, e apoderou-se das riquezas do país.
20 After his conquest of Egypt, in the year 143, Antiochus turned about and advanced on Israel andJerusalem in massive strength.	20 Após ter derrotado o Egito, pelo ano cento e quarenta e três, regressou Antíoco e atacou Israel, subindo a Jerusalém com um forte exército.
21 Insolently breaking into the sanctuary, he removed the golden altar and the lamp-stand for the lightwith all its fittings,	21 Penetrou cheio de orgulho no santuário, tomou o altar de ouro, o candelabro das luzes com todos os seus pertences,

24 and, removing all these, he went back to his own country, having shed much blood and uttered wordsof extreme arrogance.	24 Arrebatando tudo consigo, regressou à sua terra, após massacrar muitos judeus e pronunciar palavras injuriosas
25 There was deep mourning for Israel throughout the country:	25 Foi isso um motivo de desolação em extremo para todo o Israel.
26 Rulers and elders groaned; girls and young men wasted away; the women's beauty suffered achange;	26 Príncipes e anciãos gemeram, jovens e moças perderam sua alegria e a beleza das mulheres empanou-se.
27 every bridegroom took up a dirge, the bride sat grief-stricken on her marriage-bed.	27 O recém-casado lamentava-se, e a esposa chorava no leito nupcial.
28 The earth quaked because of its inhabitants and the whole House of Jacob was clothed with shame.	28 A própria terra tremia por todos os seus habitantes e a casa de Jacó cobriu-se de vergonha.
29 Two years later the king sent the Mysarch through the cities of Judah. He came to Jerusalem with animpressive force,	29 Dois anos após, Antíoco enviou um oficial a cobrar o tributo nas cidades de Judá. Chegou ele a Jerusalém com uma numerosa tropa;
30 and addressing them with what appeared to be peaceful words, he gained their confidence; thensuddenly he fell on the city, dealing it a terrible blow, and destroying many of the people of Israel.	30 dirigiu-se aos habitantes com palavras pacíficas, mas astuciosas, nas quais acreditaram; em seguida lançou-se de improviso sobre a cidade, pilhou-a seriamente e matou muita gente.

34 There they installed a brood of sinners, of renegades, who fortified themselves inside it,	34 Instalaram ali uma guarnição brutal de gente sem leis, fortificaram-se aí;
35 storing arms and provisions, and depositing there the loot they had collected from Jerusalem; theywere to prove a great trouble.	35 e ajuntaram armas e provisões. Reunindo todos os espólios do saque de Jerusalém, ali os acumularam. Constituíram desse modo uma grande ameaça.
36 It became an ambush for the sanctuary, an evil adversary for Israel at all times.	36 Serviram de cilada para o templo, e um inimigo constantemente incitado contra o povo de Israel,
37 They shed innocent blood al round the sanctuary and defiled the sanctuary itself.	37 derramando sangue inocente ao redor do templo e profanando o santuário.
38 The citizens of Jerusalem fled because of them, she became a dwelling-place of strangers; estrangedfrom her own offspring, her children forsook her.	38 Por causa deles, os habitantes de Jerusalém fugiram, e só ficaram lá os estrangeiros. Jerusalém tornou-se estranha a seus próprios filhos e estes a abandonaram.
39 Her sanctuary became as forsaken as a desert, her feasts were turned into mourning, her Sabbathsinto a mockery, her honour into reproach.	39 Seu templo ficou desolado como um deserto, seus dias de festa se transformaram em dias de luto, seus sábados, em dias de vergonha, e sua glória em desonra.
40 Her dishonour now ful y matched her former glory, her greatness was turned into grief.	40 Quanto fora ela honrada, agora foi desprezada, e sua exaltação converteu-se em tormento.
41 The king then issued a proclamation to his whole kingdom that al were to become a single people,each nation renouncing its particular customs.	41 Então o rei Antíoco publicou para todo o reino um edito, prescrevendo que todos os povos formassem um único povo e
42 Al the gentiles conformed to the king's decree,	42 que abandonassem suas leis particulares. Todos os gentios se conformaram com essa ordem do rei, e 43. muitos de Israel adotaram a sua religião, sacrificando aos ídolos e violando o sábado.
43 and many Israelites chose to accept his religion, sacrificing to idols and profaning the Sabbath.
44 The king also sent edicts by messenger to Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, directing them to adoptcustoms foreign to the country,	44 Por intermédio de mensageiros, o rei enviou, a Jerusalém e às cidades de Judá, cartas prescrevendo que aceitassem os costumes dos outros povos da terra,
45 banning burnt offerings, sacrifices and libations from the sanctuary, profaning Sabbaths and feasts,	45 suspendessem os holocaustos, os sacrifícios e as libações no templo, violassem os sábados e as festas, 46. profanassem o santuário e os santos,
46 defiling the sanctuary and everything holy,
47 building altars, shrines and temples for idols, sacrificing pigs and unclean beasts,	47 erigissem altares, templos e ídolos, sacrificassem porcos e animais imundos,
48 leaving their sons uncircumcised, and prostituting themselves to al kinds of impurity and abomination,	48 deixassem seus filhos incircuncidados e maculassem suas almas com toda sorte de impurezas e abominações, de maneira
49 so that they should forget the Law and revoke all observance of it.	49 a obrigarem-nos a esquecer a lei e a transgredir as prescrições.
50 Anyone not obeying the king's command was to be put to death.	50 Todo aquele que não obedecesse à ordem do rei seria morto.
51 Writing in such terms to every part of his kingdom, the king appointed inspectors for the whole peopleand directed al the towns of Judah to offer sacrifice city by city.	51 Foi nesse teor que o rei escreveu a todo o seu reino; nomeou comissários para vigiarem o cumprimento de sua vontade pelo povo e coagirem as cidades de Judá, uma por uma, a sacrificar.
52 Many of the people -- that is, every apostate from the Law -- rallied to them and so committed evil inthe country,	52 Houve muitos dentre o povo que colaboraram com eles e abandonaram a lei. Fizeram muito mal no país, e 53. constrangeram os israelitas a se refugiarem em asilos e refúgios ocultos.
53 forcing Israel into hiding in any possible place of refuge.
54 On the fifteenth day of Chislev in the year 145 the king built the appalling abomination on top of thealtar of burnt offering; and altars were built in the surrounding towns of Judah	54 No dia quinze do mês de Casleu, do ano cento e quarenta e cinco, edificaram a abominação da desolação por sobre o altar e construíram altares em todas as cidades circunvizinhas de Judá.
55 and incense offered at the doors of houses and in the streets.	55 Ofereciam sacrifícios diante das portas das casas e nas praças públicas,
56 Any books of the Law that came to light were torn up and burned.	56 rasgavam e queimavam todos os livros da lei que achavam;
57 Whenever anyone was discovered possessing a copy of the covenant or practising the Law, theking's decree sentenced him to death.	57 em toda parte, todo aquele em poder do qual se achava um livro do testamento, ou todo aquele que mostrasse gosto pela lei, morreria por ordem do rei.
58 Month after month they took harsh action against any offenders they discovered in the towns of Israel.	58 Com esse poder que tinham, tratavam assim, cada mês, os judeus que eles encontravam nas cidades
59 On the twenty-fifth day of each month, sacrifice was offered on the altar erected on top of the altar ofburnt offering.	59 e, no dia vinte e cinco do mês, sacrificavam no altar, que sobressaía ao altar do templo.
60 Women who had had their children circumcised were put to death according to the edict	60 As mulheres, que levavam seus filhos a circuncidar, eram mortas conforme a ordem do rei,

62 Yet there were many in Israel who stood firm and found the courage to refuse unclean food.	62 Numerosos foram os israelitas que tomaram a firme resolução de não comer nada que fosse impuro, e preferiram a morte antes que se manchar com alimentos;
63 They chose death rather than contamination by such fare or profanation of the holy covenant, andthey were executed.	63 não quiseram violar a santa lei e foram trucidados.
64 It was a truly dreadful retribution that visited Israel.	64 Caiu assim sobre Israel uma imensa cólera.
