NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Alexander of Macedon son of Philip had come from the land of Kittim and defeated Darius king of thePersians and Medes, whom he succeeded as ruler, at first of Hel as.	1 Alejandro de Macedonia, Hijo de Filipo, partió del país de Quitím, y después de derrotar a Darío, rey de los persas y los medos, reinó en lugar de él, en primer lugar sobre la Hélade.
2 He undertook many campaigns, gained possession of many fortresses, and put the local kings todeath.	2 Libró muchas batallas, conquistó plazas fuertes y dio muerte a reyes de la tierra.
3 So he advanced to the ends of the earth, plundering nation after nation; the earth grew silent beforehim, and his ambitious heart swel ed with pride.	3 Avanzó hasta los confines del mundo y saqueó una multitud de naciones. 4 He assembled very powerful forces and subdued provinces, nations and princes, and they became histributaries.	4 Reunió un ejército poderosísimo, y sometió provincias, naciones y dinastías, que le pagaron tributo.
5 But the time came when Alexander took to his bed, in the knowledge that he was dying.	5 Después cayó enfermo y, comprendiendo que iba a morir,
6 He summoned his officers, noblemen who had been brought up with him from his youth, and dividedhis kingdom among them while he was stil alive.	6 convocó a sus generales, a los nobles que se habían educado con él desde su juventud y, antes de su muerte, repartió entre ellos su reino.

11 It was then that there emerged from Israel a set of renegades who led many people astray. 'Come,'they said, 'let us al y ourselves with the gentiles surrounding us, for since we separated ourselves from themmany misfortunes have overtaken us.'	11 Fue entonces cuando apareció en Israel un grupo de renegados que sedujeron a muchos, diciendo: «Hagamos una alianza con las naciones vecinas, porque desde que nos separamos de ellas, nos han sobrevenido muchos males».
12 This proposal proved acceptable,	12 Esta propuesta fue bien recibida,
13 and a number of the people eagerly approached the king, who authorised them to practise thegentiles' observances.	13 y algunos del pueblo fueron en seguida a ver al rey y este les dio autorización para seguir las costumbres de los paganos.
14 So they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem, such as the gentiles have,	14 Ellos construyeron un gimnasio en Jerusalén al estilo de los paganos,
15 disguised their circumcision, and abandoned the holy covenant, submitting to gentile rule as willingslaves of impiety.	15 disimularon la marca de la circuncisión y, renegando de la santa alianza, se unieron a los paganos y se entregaron a toda clase de maldades.
16 Once Antiochus had seen his authority established, he determined to make himself king of Egypt andthe ruler of both kingdoms.	16 Cuando Antíoco se sintió seguro de su poder, proyectó apoderarse también de Egipto, para gobernar sobre ambos reinos.
17 He invaded Egypt in massive strength, with chariots and elephants (and cavalry) and a large fleet.	17 Entonces entró en Egipto con un poderoso ejército, con carros, elefantes, caballería y una gran flota.
18 He engaged Ptolemy king of Egypt in battle, and Ptolemy turned back and fled before his advance,leaving many casualties.	18 Allí atacó a Tolomeo, rey de Egipto. Este retrocedió ante él y huyó, dejando muchos muertos.
19 The fortified cities of Egypt were captured, and Antiochus plundered the country.	19 Antíoco ocupó las ciudades fortificadas de Egipto y saqueó todo el país.
20 After his conquest of Egypt, in the year 143, Antiochus turned about and advanced on Israel andJerusalem in massive strength.	20 Después de derrotar a Egipto, emprendió el camino de regreso, el año ciento cuarenta y tres, y subió contra Israel, llegando a Jerusalén con un poderoso ejército.
21 Insolently breaking into the sanctuary, he removed the golden altar and the lamp-stand for the lightwith all its fittings,	21 Antíoco penetró arrogantemente en el Santuario y se llevó el altar de oro, el candelabro con todas sus lámparas,
22 together with the table for the loaves of permanent offering, the libation vessels, the cups, the goldencensers, the veil, the crowns, and the golden decoration on the front of the Temple, which he stripped ofeverything.	22 la mesa de los panes de la ofrenda, los vasos para las libaciones, las copas, los incensarios de oro, el cortinado y las coronas, y arrasó todo el decorado de oro que recubría la fachada del Templo.

24 and, removing all these, he went back to his own country, having shed much blood and uttered wordsof extreme arrogance.	24 Cargó con todo eso y regresó a su país, después de haber causado una gran masacre y de haberse jactado insolentemente.
25 There was deep mourning for Israel throughout the country:	25 Una gran consternación se extendió por todo Israel.
26 Rulers and elders groaned; girls and young men wasted away; the women's beauty suffered achange;	26 Gimieron los jefes y los ancianos, languidecieron las jóvenes y los jóvenes, la belleza de las mujeres se marchitó.

29 Two years later the king sent the Mysarch through the cities of Judah. He came to Jerusalem with animpressive force,	29 Dos años después, el rey envió a las ciudades de Judá un recaudador de impuestos, que se presentó en Jerusalén con un poderoso ejército.
30 and addressing them with what appeared to be peaceful words, he gained their confidence; thensuddenly he fell on the city, dealing it a terrible blow, and destroying many of the people of Israel.	30 El les habló amistosamente, pero con la intención de engañarlos, y después que se ganó su confianza, atacó sorpresivamente a la ciudad y le asestó un terrible golpe, causando numerosas víctimas entre los israelitas.

33 They then rebuilt the City of David with a great strong wal and strong towers and made this theirCitadel.	33 Después, levantaron en torno a la Ciudad de David una muralla alta y resistente, protegida por torres poderosas, y la convirtieron en su Ciudadela.
34 There they installed a brood of sinners, of renegades, who fortified themselves inside it,	34 Allí establecieron un grupo de gente impía, sin fe y sin ley, que se fortificó en ese lugar.
35 storing arms and provisions, and depositing there the loot they had collected from Jerusalem; theywere to prove a great trouble.	35 Lo proveyeron de armas y víveres, y depositaron allí el botín que habían reunido en el saqueo a Jerusalén. Así se convirtieron en una permanente amenaza.
36 It became an ambush for the sanctuary, an evil adversary for Israel at all times.	36 Esto llegó a ser una acechanza para el Santuario, una cruel y constante hostilidad para Israel.
37 They shed innocent blood al round the sanctuary and defiled the sanctuary itself.	37 Derramaron sangre inocente alrededor del Templo y profanaron el Lugar santo.
38 The citizens of Jerusalem fled because of them, she became a dwelling-place of strangers; estrangedfrom her own offspring, her children forsook her.	38 A causa de ellos, huyeron los habitantes de Jerusalén y la Ciudad se convirtió en una colonia de extranjeros: se volvió extraña para los que nacieron en ella y sus propios hijos la abandonaron.
39 Her sanctuary became as forsaken as a desert, her feasts were turned into mourning, her Sabbathsinto a mockery, her honour into reproach.	39 Su Santuario quedó devastado como un desierto, sus fiestas se transformaron en duelo, sus sábados en motivo de burla y su honor en desprecio.
40 Her dishonour now ful y matched her former glory, her greatness was turned into grief.	40 Tan grande fue su vergüenza como lo había sido su gloria, y su grandeza dio paso a la aflicción.
41 The king then issued a proclamation to his whole kingdom that al were to become a single people,each nation renouncing its particular customs.	41 El rey promulgó un decreto en todo su reino, ordenando que todos formaran un solo pueblo
42 Al the gentiles conformed to the king's decree,	42 y renunciaran a sus propias costumbres. Todas las naciones se sometieron a la orden del rey
43 and many Israelites chose to accept his religion, sacrificing to idols and profaning the Sabbath.	43 y muchos israelitas aceptaron el culto oficial, ofrecieron sacrificios a los ídolos y profanaron el sábado.
44 The king also sent edicts by messenger to Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, directing them to adoptcustoms foreign to the country,	44 Además, el rey envió mensajeros a Jerusalén y a las ciudades de Judá, con la orden escrita de que adoptaran las costumbres extrañas al país:
45 banning burnt offerings, sacrifices and libations from the sanctuary, profaning Sabbaths and feasts,	45 los holocaustos, los sacrificios y las libaciones debían suprimirse en el Santuario; los sábados y los días festivos debían ser profanados;
46 defiling the sanctuary and everything holy,	46 el Santuario y las cosas santas debían ser mancillados;

49 so that they should forget the Law and revoke all observance of it.	49 olvidando así la Ley y cambiando todas las prácticas.
50 Anyone not obeying the king's command was to be put to death.	50 El que no obrara conforme a la orden del rey, debía morir.
51 Writing in such terms to every part of his kingdom, the king appointed inspectors for the whole peopleand directed al the towns of Judah to offer sacrifice city by city.	51 En estos términos escribió a todo su reino. Además nombró inspectores sobre todo el pueblo, y ordenó a las ciudades de Judá que ofrecieran sacrificios en cada una de ellas.
52 Many of the people -- that is, every apostate from the Law -- rallied to them and so committed evil inthe country,	52 Mucha gente del pueblo, todos los que abandonaban la Ley, se unieron a ellos y causaron un gran daño al país,
53 forcing Israel into hiding in any possible place of refuge.	53 obligando a Israel a esconderse en toda clase de refugios.
54 On the fifteenth day of Chislev in the year 145 the king built the appalling abomination on top of thealtar of burnt offering; and altars were built in the surrounding towns of Judah	54 El día quince del mes de Quisleu, en el año ciento cuarenta y cinco, el rey hizo erigir sobre el altar de los holocaustos la Abominación de la desolación. También construyeron altares en todas las ciudades de Judá.
55 and incense offered at the doors of houses and in the streets.	55 En las puertas de las casas y en las plazas se quemaba incienso.
56 Any books of the Law that came to light were torn up and burned.	56 Se destruían y arrojaban al fuego los libros de la Ley que se encontraban,
57 Whenever anyone was discovered possessing a copy of the covenant or practising the Law, theking's decree sentenced him to death.	57 y al que se descubría con un libro de la Alianza en su poder, o al que observaba los preceptos de la Ley, se lo condenaba a muerte en virtud del decreto real.
58 Month after month they took harsh action against any offenders they discovered in the towns of Israel.	58 Valiéndose de su fuerza, se ensañaban continuamente contra los israelitas sorprendidos en contravención en las diversas ciudades.
59 On the twenty-fifth day of each month, sacrifice was offered on the altar erected on top of the altar ofburnt offering.	59 El veinticinco de cada mes, se ofrecían sacrificios en el ara que se alzaba sobre el altar de los holocaustos.
60 Women who had had their children circumcised were put to death according to the edict	60 A las mujeres que habían circuncidado a sus hijos se las mataba, conforme al decreto,
61 with their babies hung round their necks, and the members of their household and those who hadperformed the circumcision were executed with them.	61 con sus criaturas colgadas al cuello. La misma suerte corrían sus familiares y todos los que habían intervenido en la circuncisión.
62 Yet there were many in Israel who stood firm and found the courage to refuse unclean food.	62 Sin embargo, muchos israelitas se mantuvieron firmes y tuvieron el valor de no comer alimentos impuros;
63 They chose death rather than contamination by such fare or profanation of the holy covenant, andthey were executed.	63 prefirieron la muerte antes que mancharse con esos alimentos y quebrantar la santa alianza, y por eso murieron.
64 It was a truly dreadful retribution that visited Israel.	64 Y una gran ira se descargó sobre Israel.
