1 Alexander of Macedon son of Philip had come from the land of Kittim and defeated Darius king of thePersians and Medes, whom he succeeded as ruler, at first of Hel as.	1 - Or avvenne che Alessandro figlio di Filippo, Macedone, primo a regnare in Grecia, uscito dalla terra di Cetim, dopo avere sconfitto Dario re dì Persia e de’ Medi,
2 He undertook many campaigns, gained possession of many fortresses, and put the local kings todeath.	2 ingaggiò molte battaglie, prese tutte le fortezze, uccise i re delle genti,
3 So he advanced to the ends of the earth, plundering nation after nation; the earth grew silent beforehim, and his ambitious heart swel ed with pride.	3 s’avanzò sino all’estremità della terra, depredò una quantità di nazioni, ed il mondo ammutolì dinanzi a lui.
4 He assembled very powerful forces and subdued provinces, nations and princes, and they became histributaries.	4 Radunò forze ed eserciti potentissimi, ed il suo cuore si gonfiò e s’insuperbì ;
5 But the time came when Alexander took to his bed, in the knowledge that he was dying.	5 soggiogò le regioni delle nazioni ed i loro capi, e se li rese tributarli.
6 He summoned his officers, noblemen who had been brought up with him from his youth, and dividedhis kingdom among them while he was stil alive.	6 Dopo ciò cadde malato; e sentendosi in fine,
7 Alexander had reigned twelve years when he died.	7 chiamò i suoi servi, grandi del regno che sino da giovani erano cresciuti con lui, e prima di morire divise tra loro il suo impero.
8 Each of his officers established himself in his own region.	8 Regnò dunque Alessandro dodici anni, e mori.
9 Al assumed crowns after his death, they and their heirs after them for many years, bringing increasingevils on the world.	9 Ed i suoi generali ebbero il regno di lui, ciascuno in'una regione,
10 From these there grew a wicked offshoot, Antiochus Epiphanes son of King Antiochus; once ahostage in Rome, he became king in the 107th year of the kingdom of the Greeks.	10 e morto lui, tutti si cinsero la corona ; cosi, dopo loro, i loro figli per molti anni; e si moltiplicarono i mali sopra la terra.
11 It was then that there emerged from Israel a set of renegades who led many people astray. 'Come,'they said, 'let us al y ourselves with the gentiles surrounding us, for since we separated ourselves from themmany misfortunes have overtaken us.'	11 Or da quelli usci una progenie di peccato, Antioco l'illustre, figlio del re Antioco, ch’era stato ostaggio a Roma, e prese a regnare nell’anno centotrentasette del regno de’ Greci.
12 This proposal proved acceptable,	12 In quel tempo vennero su da Israele de' figli scellerati, e persuasero molti con dire: « Andiamo, e facciamo alleanza coi gentili che ci stanno dintorno; perchè, da quando li lasciammo, ci piovvero addosso molti malanni ».
13 and a number of the people eagerly approached the king, who authorised them to practise thegentiles' observances.	13 Parve a loro giusto questo discorso,
14 So they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem, such as the gentiles have,	14 ed alcuni del popolo si incaricarono d’andare al re, il quale dette loro potestà di vivere a modo del gentili.
15 disguised their circumcision, and abandoned the holy covenant, submitting to gentile rule as willingslaves of impiety.	15 Edificarono dunque in Gerusalemme un ginnasio secondo i costumi pagani, si fecero i prepuzi, rinnegarono il patto santo [con Dio],
16 Once Antiochus had seen his authority established, he determined to make himself king of Egypt andthe ruler of both kingdoms.	16 fecero lega coi gentili, e venderono l’anima propria per far il male.
17 He invaded Egypt in massive strength, with chariots and elephants (and cavalry) and a large fleet.	17 Ed il regno d’Antioco si raffermò, ed egli aspirò a regnare anche sull’ Egitto, per avere due regni.
18 He engaged Ptolemy king of Egypt in battle, and Ptolemy turned back and fled before his advance,leaving many casualties.	18 Entrò dunque in Egitto con un grande esercito, carri, elefanti, cavalieri e gran numero di navi;
19 The fortified cities of Egypt were captured, and Antiochus plundered the country.	19 e mosse guerra contro Tolomeo re dell’ Egitto il quale ebbe paura di lui, e fuggì, lasciando sul campo molti de’ suoi.
20 After his conquest of Egypt, in the year 143, Antiochus turned about and advanced on Israel andJerusalem in massive strength.	20 Antioco dunque s''impadronì della fortezza dell'Egitto, e depredò quella terra.
21 Insolently breaking into the sanctuary, he removed the golden altar and the lamp-stand for the lightwith all its fittings,	21 Così soggiogato l’Egitto, l’anno centoquarantatrè, Antioco tornò indietro, e si rivolse contro Israele.
22 together with the table for the loaves of permanent offering, the libation vessels, the cups, the goldencensers, the veil, the crowns, and the golden decoration on the front of the Temple, which he stripped ofeverything.	22 Sali a Gerusalemme con un grosso esercito,
23 He made off with the silver and gold and precious vessels; he discovered the secret treasures andseized them	23 ed entrò con arroganza nel luogo santo. Prese l'altare d'oro, il candelabro delle lampade con tutti i suoi arredi, la mensa della proposizione, i vasi delle libazioni, le coppe ed i mortai d'oro, il velo, le corone, l’ornnmento d'oro che stava sulla fronte del tempio; e fece tutto in pezzi.
24 and, removing all these, he went back to his own country, having shed much blood and uttered wordsof extreme arrogance.	24 Prese l'argento e l'oro, e gli arredi preziosi, e tutti i tesori nascosti che potè trovare; e rapita ogni cosa, ritornò nella sua terra,
25 There was deep mourning for Israel throughout the country:	25 dopo aver fatto strage d'uomini, e parlato con grande insolenza.
26 Rulers and elders groaned; girls and young men wasted away; the women's beauty suffered achange;	26 Allora fu gran pianto in Israele, e in tutte le sue contrade.
27 every bridegroom took up a dirge, the bride sat grief-stricken on her marriage-bed.	27 Gemettero i magnati e gli anziani, le fanciulle ed i giovani si sentivan mancare, la bellezza delle donne venne meno.
28 The earth quaked because of its inhabitants and the whole House of Jacob was clothed with shame.	28 Gli sposi si sfogavano in lamenti, e le spose piangevano sedute sul letto nuziale.
29 Two years later the king sent the Mysarch through the cities of Judah. He came to Jerusalem with animpressive force,	29 La terra si commosse per i suoi abitanti, e tutta la casa di Giacobbe si ricopri di confusione.
30 and addressing them with what appeared to be peaceful words, he gained their confidence; thensuddenly he fell on the city, dealing it a terrible blow, and destroying many of the people of Israel.	30 Passati due anni, il re mandò nelle città di Giuda il soprintendente ai tributi, il quale venne a Gerusalemme con molti uomini,
31 He pil aged the city and set it on fire, tore down its houses and encircling wal ,	31 e con inganno parlò ai cittadini parole amichevoli, cosi che gli credettero.
32 took the women and children captive and commandeered the cattle.	32 Ma all' improvviso piombò sulla città, la colpi di gran piaga, e mise a morte gran gente in Israele.
33 They then rebuilt the City of David with a great strong wal and strong towers and made this theirCitadel.	33 Saccheggiò la città, la dette alle fiamme, e ne distrusse le case e le mura di cinta.
34 There they installed a brood of sinners, of renegades, who fortified themselves inside it,	34 E menarono in ischiavitù le donne ed i fanciulli, e s'impadronirono degli armenti.
35 storing arms and provisions, and depositing there the loot they had collected from Jerusalem; theywere to prove a great trouble.	35 Poi fortificarono la città di David con mura grandi e solide, e solide torri, e ne fecero la loro rocca.
36 It became an ambush for the sanctuary, an evil adversary for Israel at all times.	36 E vi posero una razza malvagia, uomini iniqui, che vi si rafforzarono, portandovi armi e viveri; misero insieme le spoglie di Gerusalemme,
37 They shed innocent blood al round the sanctuary and defiled the sanctuary itself.	37 ed ivi le depositarono; e divennero un gran pericolo.
38 The citizens of Jerusalem fled because of them, she became a dwelling-place of strangers; estrangedfrom her own offspring, her children forsook her.	38 Fu questa un' insidia al luogo santo, ed una grande avversità per Israele.
39 Her sanctuary became as forsaken as a desert, her feasts were turned into mourning, her Sabbathsinto a mockery, her honour into reproach.	39 Versarono il sangue innocente attorno al santuario, e contaminarono il luogo santo.
40 Her dishonour now ful y matched her former glory, her greatness was turned into grief.	40 per cagion loro, gli abitanti di Gerusalemme fuggirono, la città divenne abitazione di stranieri, straniera al suo popolo ed i suoi figli l'abbandonarono.
41 The king then issued a proclamation to his whole kingdom that al were to become a single people,each nation renouncing its particular customs.	41 Il suo santuario divenne desolato come un deserto; i suoi giorni di festa si convertirono in lutto, i suoi sabati in obbrobrio, il suo splendore in un niente;
42 Al the gentiles conformed to the king's decree,	42 la sua ignominia fu grande quanto già la sua gloria, e la sua eccellenza sì converse in lutto.
43 and many Israelites chose to accept his religion, sacrificing to idols and profaning the Sabbath.	43 Ed il re Antioco scrisse a tutto il suo regno, che si facesse un popolo solo, e che ognuno lasciasse da parte la propria legge.
44 The king also sent edicts by messenger to Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, directing them to adoptcustoms foreign to the country,	44 Tutti i pagani acconsentirono alla parola del re Antioco;
45 banning burnt offerings, sacrifices and libations from the sanctuary, profaning Sabbaths and feasts,	45 ed anche in Israele molti si piegarono alla sua imposizione, sacrificarono agli idoli, e violarono il sabato.
46 defiling the sanctuary and everything holy,	46 Ed il re per mezzo di corrieri mandò lettere a Gerusalemme ed a tutte le città di Giuda, ordinando che seguissero le leggi del gentili del paese,
47 building altars, shrines and temples for idols, sacrificing pigs and unclean beasts,	47 vietassero d'offrire nel tempio di Dio gli olocausti, e i sacrifizi e le ostie di pace,
48 leaving their sons uncircumcised, and prostituting themselves to al kinds of impurity and abomination,	48 e proibissero di celebrare il sabato ed i giorni di solennità.
49 so that they should forget the Law and revoke all observance of it.	49 Comandò che si profanasse il luogo santo, ed il santo popolo d'Israele ;
50 Anyone not obeying the king's command was to be put to death.	50 che s'edificassero are e templi ed idoli, e si immolassero carni porcine ed animali immondi;
51 Writing in such terms to every part of his kingdom, the king appointed inspectors for the whole peopleand directed al the towns of Judah to offer sacrifice city by city.	51 che lasciassero incirconcisi i figli, e si macchiasse l'anima con ogni sorta di immondezze ed abominazioni, ponendo in abbandono la legge, e sovvertendo tutti gli ordinamenti di Dio ;
52 Many of the people -- that is, every apostate from the Law -- rallied to them and so committed evil inthe country,	52 chiunque non facesse secondo il comando del re Antioco, fosse messo a morte.
53 forcing Israel into hiding in any possible place of refuge.	53 Tutte queste cose fece cosi scrivere a tutto il suo regno, e mise a capo del popolo del soprintendenti, che a così fare lo costringessero,
54 On the fifteenth day of Chislev in the year 145 the king built the appalling abomination on top of thealtar of burnt offering; and altars were built in the surrounding towns of Judah	54 e questi comandarono alle città di Giuda di sacrificare [agl’idoli].
55 and incense offered at the doors of houses and in the streets.	55 Molti del popolo passaron dalla lor parte, abbandonando la legge del Signore, fecero il male nel loro paese,
56 Any books of the Law that came to light were torn up and burned.	56 e costrinsero il popolo d’Israele a rifugiarsi nelle caverne e ne’ luoghi dove sogliono nascondersi i fuggiaschi.
57 Whenever anyone was discovered possessing a copy of the covenant or practising the Law, theking's decree sentenced him to death.	57 Ai quindici del mese Casleu dell’anno centoquarantacinque, il re Antioco fece porre sull’altare di Dio l’abominevole idolo di desolazione; e per tutte le città di Giuda all’intorno furono alzati altari;
58 Month after month they took harsh action against any offenders they discovered in the towns of Israel.	58 davanti alle porte delle case, e per le piazzerai bruciava incenso e si sacrificava;
59 On the twenty-fifth day of each month, sacrifice was offered on the altar erected on top of the altar ofburnt offering.	59 e si strapparono i libri della legge di Dio, e li gettarono sul fuoco;
60 Women who had had their children circumcised were put to death according to the edict	60 o presso chiunque si trovavano libri della legge del Signore, e chiunque la legge del Signore osservava, lo trucidavano secondo l’editto del re.
61 with their babies hung round their necks, and the members of their household and those who hadperformed the circumcision were executed with them.	61 Cosi violentemente facevano con quelli del popolo d'Israele che mese per mese venivano scoperti,
62 Yet there were many in Israel who stood firm and found the courage to refuse unclean food.	62 ed ai venticinque del mese sacrificavano sull’ara posta di contro all’altare.
63 They chose death rather than contamination by such fare or profanation of the holy covenant, andthey were executed.	63 Le donne che facevan circoncidere i figli venivan trucidate, secondo il comando del re Antioco;
64 It was a truly dreadful retribution that visited Israel.	64 i figli erano impiccati per il collo in tutte le loro case, e quelli che li circoncidevano eran trucidati.
	65 Ma molti del popolo d’Israele giurarono in cuor loro di non mangiar cibi immondi, ed elessero piuttosto morire che macchiarsi con cibi immondi ;
	66 non vollero trasgredire la legge santa di Dio, e furon messi a morte.
	67 Fu grande a dismisura il castigo [di Dio] sopra il popolo.
