1 Alexander of Macedon son of Philip had come from the land of Kittim and defeated Darius king of thePersians and Medes, whom he succeeded as ruler, at first of Hel as.	1 Or egli avvenne,che Alessandro figliuolo di Filippo, re de' Macedoni a il quale regnò il primo nella Grecia, essendo uscito dal paese di Cethim, sconfisse Dario re de' Persian' e de' Medi:
2 He undertook many campaigns, gained possession of many fortresses, and put the local kings todeath.	2 Vinse molte battaglie, ed espugnò dappertutto le città forti, e uccise i re della terra.
3 So he advanced to the ends of the earth, plundering nation after nation; the earth grew silent beforehim, and his ambitious heart swel ed with pride.	3 E si avanzò sino agli ultimi confini del mondo, e si arricchi colle spoglie di molte nazioni, e la terra si tacque dinanzi a lui.
4 He assembled very powerful forces and subdued provinces, nations and princes, and they became histributaries.	4 E mise insieme un esercito poderoso e di straordinario valore, e il cuore di lui si innalzò, e si inalberò.
5 But the time came when Alexander took to his bed, in the knowledge that he was dying.	5 E si rendè padrone delle provincie delle nazioni e dei tiranni, i quali divennero suoi tributarii.
6 He summoned his officers, noblemen who had been brought up with him from his youth, and dividedhis kingdom among them while he was stil alive.	6 E quindi si allettò, e si conobbe mortale.

11 It was then that there emerged from Israel a set of renegades who led many people astray. 13 and a number of the people eagerly approached the king, who authorised them to practise thegentiles' observances.	13 E quegli approvarono questo discorso.

27 every bridegroom took up a dirge, the bride sat grief-stricken on her marriage-bed.	27 E i principi e i seniori gemevano; i giovani e le fanciulle erano senza fiato; e la beltà delle donne spari.
28 The earth quaked because of its inhabitants and the whole House of Jacob was clothed with shame.	28 Tutti gli sposi novelli menavan duolo e piangevan le spose sedendo sul letto nuziale:
29 Two years later the king sent the Mysarch through the cities of Judah. He came to Jerusalem with animpressive force,	29 E si commosse la terra per pietà dei suoi abitatori, e tutta la casa di Giacobbe fa nell'obbrobrio.

34 There they installed a brood of sinners, of renegades, who fortified themselves inside it,	34 E menarono schiave le donne, e presero i ragazzi e i bestiami.
35 storing arms and provisions, and depositing there the loot they had collected from Jerusalem; theywere to prove a great trouble.	35 E cinsero la città di David di muraglia forte e grande e di massicce torri, ed ella serviva loro di fortezza.

37 They shed innocent blood al round the sanctuary and defiled the sanctuary itself.	37 Ivi le riposero: ed essi furono un gran flagello,
38 The citizens of Jerusalem fled because of them, she became a dwelling-place of strangers; estrangedfrom her own offspring, her children forsook her.	38 Stando ivi in aguato contro del luogo santo, e divennero un cattivo diavolo per Israele.
39 Her sanctuary became as forsaken as a desert, her feasts were turned into mourning, her Sabbathsinto a mockery, her honour into reproach.	39 E spargevano il sangue innocente attorno al luogo santo, e contaminarono il santuario.
40 Her dishonour now ful y matched her former glory, her greatness was turned into grief.	40 E per causa loro si aggirano gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, ed ella divenne stanza degli stranieri e straniera al suo popolo; e i suoi figliuoli l'abbandonarono.
41 The king then issued a proclamation to his whole kingdom that al were to become a single people,each nation renouncing its particular customs.	41 Il suo santuario restò in abbandono, come un deserto; le sue feste solenni si cambiarono in tutto, e i suoi sabati in obbrobrio e i suoi onori andarono in fumo.

50 Anyone not obeying the king's command was to be put to death.	50 E ordinò che si ergessero altari e templi e idoli, e si immolasscro carni di porco e bestie immonde,
51 Writing in such terms to every part of his kingdom, the king appointed inspectors for the whole peopleand directed al the towns of Judah to offer sacrifice city by city.	51 E non circoncidessero i propri figliuoli, e si contaminassero con ogni sorta d'immondezze e di abominazioni, affinché si dimenticassero della legge di Dio, e conculcassero tutti i precetti di Dio.
52 Many of the people -- that is, every apostate from the Law -- rallied to them and so committed evil inthe country,	52 E che tutti quelli che non obbedissero all'ordine del re Antioco, fossero messi a morte.
53 forcing Israel into hiding in any possible place of refuge.	53 Di tal tenore furon le lettere spedite da lui per tutto il suo regno, e deputò magistrati, che costringessero il popolo a far tali cose.
54 On the fifteenth day of Chislev in the year 145 the king built the appalling abomination on top of thealtar of burnt offering; and altars were built in the surrounding towns of Judah	54 E questi comandarono alle città di Giuda, che sacrificassero.

64 It was a truly dreadful retribution that visited Israel.	64 E impiccavano i bambini pel collo in tutte le case loro, e trucidavano chi gli avesse circoncisi.
