NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Jehoash was seven years old when he came to the throne.1 Septemque annorum erat Ioas, cum regnare coepisset.
Jehoash became king in the seventh year of Jehu, and reigned for forty years in Jerusalem. Hismother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.2 Anno septimo Iehu regnavit Ioas; quadraginta annis regnavit in Ierusalem. Nomen matris eius Sebia de Bersabee.
Al his life Jehoash did what Yahweh regards as right, having been instructed by Jehoiada the priest.3 Fecitque Ioas rectum coram Domino cunctis diebus, quibus docuit eum Ioiada sacerdos.
The high places, however, were not abolished, and the people stil offered sacrifices and incense onthe high places.4 Verumtamen excelsa non abstulit; adhuc populus immolabat et adolebat in excelsis.
Jehoash said to the priests, 'Al the money from the sacred revenues brought to the Temple ofYahweh, the money from personal taxes, and al the money voluntarily offered to the Temple-5 Dixitque Ioas ad sacerdotes: “ Omnem pecuniam sanctorum, quae illata fuerit in templum Domini a praetereuntibus, quae offertur pro pretio animae, et quam sponte et arbitrio cordis sui inferunt in templum Domini,
the priests are to receive this individual y from people of their acquaintance and wil carry out al therepairs to the Temple which need to be made.'6 accipiant illam singuli sacerdotes a notis suis et instaurent sartatecta domus, si quid necessarium viderint instauratione ”.
Now in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash the priests had done no repairs to the Temple;7 Igitur usque ad vicesimum tertium annum regis Ioas non instauraverunt sacerdotes sartatecta templi.
so King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the other priests. 'Why are you not repairing theTemple?' he asked. 'You are no longer to accept money from people of your acquaintance but are to hand it overfor the Temple repairs.'8 Vocavitque rex Ioas Ioiada pontificem et sacerdotes dicens eis: “ Quare sartatecta non instauratis templi? Nolite ergo amplius accipere pecuniam a notis vestris, sed ad instaurationem templi reddite eam ”.
The priests agreed to accept no money from the people and no longer to be responsible for repairs tothe Temple.9 Acquieveruntque sacerdotes ultra non accipere pecuniam a populo nec instaurare sartatecta domus.
Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in the lid and placed it beside the pil ar, to the right ofthe entry to the Temple of Yahweh; in it the priests who guarded the threshold put al the money which was givenfor the Temple of Yahweh.10 Et tulit Ioiada pontifex gazophylacium unum aperuitque foramen desuper et posuit illud iuxta altare ad dexteram ingredientium domum Domini; mittebantque in eo sacerdotes, qui custodiebant ostia, omnem pecuniam, quae deferebatur ad templum Domini.
Whenever they saw that there was a great deal of money in the chest, the king's secretary wouldcome, and they would empty it out and reckon the money then in the Temple of Yahweh.11 Cumque viderent multam pecuniam esse in gazophylacio, ascendebat scriba regis et pontifex, colligebantque et numerabant pecuniam, quae inveniebatur in domo Domini,
Once checked, they paid this money over to the masters of works attached to the Temple of Yahweh, and these in turn spent it on carpenters and builders working on the Temple of Yahweh,12 et dabant eam iuxta numerum atque mensuram in manu opificum, qui operibus praepositi erant in domo Domini; ipsique impendebant eam in fabris lignorum et in structoribus, qui operabantur in domo Domini,
on masons and stonecutters, and on buying timber and dressed stone to be used for repairs to theTemple of Yahweh; in short, for al the costs of the Temple repairs.13 et in caementariis et in his, qui caedebant saxa, et ut emerent ligna et lapides de lapicidinis, ut instaurarentur sartatecta domus Domini, et pro universis, quae indigebant expensa ad muniendam domum.
But no silver basins, knives, sprinkling bowls, trumpets or gold or silver objects were made for theTemple of Yahweh out of the money presented,14 Verumtamen non fiebant pelves argenteae templi Domini et cultri et paterae et tubae, omne vas aureum et argenteum, de pecunia, quae inferebatur in templum Domini;
which was al given to the masters of works for repairing the Temple of Yahweh.15 opificibus enim dabatur, ut instauraretur templum Domini.
No accounts were kept with the men to whom the money was paid over to be spent on the workmen, since they were honest in their work.16 Et non fiebat ratio his hominibus, qui accipiebant pecuniam, ut distribuerent eam operariis; illi enim in fide agebant.
Money offered in expiation of an offence or of a sin was not given to the Temple of Yahweh; that wasfor the priests.17 Pecuniam vero pro delicto et pecuniam pro peccatis non inferebatur in templum Domini, quia sacerdotum erat.
At that time Hazael king of Aram went to war against Gath, and captured it; he then prepared to attackJerusalem.18 Tunc ascendit Hazael rex Syriae et pugnabat contra Geth; cepitque eam et direxit faciem suam, ut ascenderet in Ierusalem.
Jehoash king of Judah took all the sacred offerings dedicated by his ancestors, the kings of Judah,Jehoshaphat, Jehoram and Ahaziah, with those which he himself had dedicated, and all the gold which was tobe found in the treasuries of the Temple of Yahweh and of the palace; he sent it all to Hazael king of Aram, whoretired from Jerusalem.19 Quam ob rem tulit Ioas rex Iudae omnia sanctificata, quae consecraverant Iosaphat et Ioram et Ochozias patres eius reges Iudae, et quae ipse obtulerat, et universum aurum, quod inveniri potuit in thesauris templi Domini et in palatio regis, misitque Hazaeli regi Syriae; et recessit ab Ierusalem.
The rest of the history of Joash, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals of theKings of Judah?20 Reliqua autem gestorum Ioas et universa, quae fecit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro annalium regum Iudae?
His own retainers rebelled and hatched a plot; they murdered Joash in the palace of the Millo . . .21 Surrexerunt autem servi eius et coniuraverunt inter se percusseruntque Ioas in domo Mello in descensu Sella.
Jozacar son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer were the retainers who struck the blows fromwhich he died. He was buried with his ancestors in the City of David; his son Amaziah succeeded him.22 Iozachar namque filius Semath et Iozabad filius Somer servi eius percusserunt eum, et mortuus est; et sepelierunt eum cum patribus suis in civitate David. Regnavitque Amasias filius eius pro eo.
