NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Jehoash was seven years old when he came to the throne.1 Joash was seven years old when he became king.
Jehoash became king in the seventh year of Jehu, and reigned for forty years in Jerusalem. Hismother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.2 Joash began to reign in the seventh year of Jehu, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother, who was named Zibiah, was from Beer-sheba.
Al his life Jehoash did what Yahweh regards as right, having been instructed by Jehoiada the priest.3 Joash did what was pleasing to the LORD as long as he lived, because the priest Jehoiada guided him.
The high places, however, were not abolished, and the people stil offered sacrifices and incense onthe high places.4 Still, the high places did not disappear; the people continued to sacrifice and to burn incense there.
Jehoash said to the priests, 'Al the money from the sacred revenues brought to the Temple ofYahweh, the money from personal taxes, and al the money voluntarily offered to the Temple-5 For the priests Joash made this rule: "All the funds for sacred purposes that are brought to the temple of the LORD--the census tax, personal redemption money, and whatever funds are freely brought to the temple of the LORD--
the priests are to receive this individual y from people of their acquaintance and wil carry out al therepairs to the Temple which need to be made.'6 the priests may take for themselves, each from his own clients. However, they must make whatever repairs on the temple may prove necessary."
Now in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash the priests had done no repairs to the Temple;7 Nevertheless, as late as the twenty-third year of the reign of King Joash, the priests had not made needed repairs on the temple.
so King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the other priests. 'Why are you not repairing theTemple?' he asked. 'You are no longer to accept money from people of your acquaintance but are to hand it overfor the Temple repairs.'8 Accordingly, King Joash summoned the priest Jehoiada and the other priests. "Why do you not repair the temple?" he asked them. "You must no longer take funds from your clients, but you shall turn them over for the repairs."
The priests agreed to accept no money from the people and no longer to be responsible for repairs tothe Temple.9 So the priests agreed that they would neither take funds from the people nor make the repairs on the temple.
Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in the lid and placed it beside the pil ar, to the right ofthe entry to the Temple of Yahweh; in it the priests who guarded the threshold put al the money which was givenfor the Temple of Yahweh.10 The priest Jehoiada then took a chest, bored a hole in its lid, and set it beside the stele, on the right as one entered the temple of the LORD. The priests who guarded the entry would put into it all the funds that were brought to the temple of the LORD.
Whenever they saw that there was a great deal of money in the chest, the king's secretary wouldcome, and they would empty it out and reckon the money then in the Temple of Yahweh.11 When they noticed that there was a large amount of silver in the chest, the royal scribe (and the priest) would come up, and they would melt down all the funds that were in the temple of the LORD, and weigh them.
Once checked, they paid this money over to the masters of works attached to the Temple of Yahweh, and these in turn spent it on carpenters and builders working on the Temple of Yahweh,12 The amount thus realized they turned over to the master workmen in the temple of the LORD. They in turn would give it to the carpenters and builders working in the temple of the LORD,
on masons and stonecutters, and on buying timber and dressed stone to be used for repairs to theTemple of Yahweh; in short, for al the costs of the Temple repairs.13 and to the lumbermen and stone cutters, and for the purchase of the wood and hewn stone used in repairing the breaches, and for any other expenses that were necessary to repair the temple.
But no silver basins, knives, sprinkling bowls, trumpets or gold or silver objects were made for theTemple of Yahweh out of the money presented,14 None of the funds brought to the temple of the LORD were used there to make silver cups, snuffers, basins, trumpets, or any gold or silver article.
which was al given to the masters of works for repairing the Temple of Yahweh.15 Instead, they were given to the workmen, and with them they repaired the temple of the LORD.
No accounts were kept with the men to whom the money was paid over to be spent on the workmen, since they were honest in their work.16 Moreover, no reckoning was asked of the men who were provided with the funds to give to the workmen, because they held positions of trust.
Money offered in expiation of an offence or of a sin was not given to the Temple of Yahweh; that wasfor the priests.17 The funds from guilt-offerings and from sin-offerings, however, were not brought to the temple of the LORD; they belonged to the priests.
At that time Hazael king of Aram went to war against Gath, and captured it; he then prepared to attackJerusalem.18 Then King Hazael of Aram mounted a siege against Gath. When he had taken it, Hazael decided to go on to attack Jerusalem.
Jehoash king of Judah took all the sacred offerings dedicated by his ancestors, the kings of Judah,Jehoshaphat, Jehoram and Ahaziah, with those which he himself had dedicated, and all the gold which was tobe found in the treasuries of the Temple of Yahweh and of the palace; he sent it all to Hazael king of Aram, whoretired from Jerusalem.19 But King Jehoash of Judah took all the dedicated offerings presented by his forebears, Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, kings of Judah, as well as his own, and all the gold there was in the treasuries of the temple and the palace, and sent them to King Hazael of Aram, who then led his forces away from Jerusalem.
The rest of the history of Joash, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals of theKings of Judah?20 The rest of the acts of Joash, with all that he did, are recorded in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah.
His own retainers rebelled and hatched a plot; they murdered Joash in the palace of the Millo . . .21 Certain of his officials entered into a plot against him and killed him at Beth-millo.
Jozacar son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer were the retainers who struck the blows fromwhich he died. He was buried with his ancestors in the City of David; his son Amaziah succeeded him.22 Jozacar, son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad, son of Shomer, were the officials who killed him. He was buried in his forefathers' City of David, and his son Amaziah succeeded him as king.
