1 Jehoash was seven years old when he came to the throne.	1 Joas devint roi à l’âge de 7 ans:
2 Jehoash became king in the seventh year of Jehu, and reigned for forty years in Jerusalem. Hismother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.	2 c’était la septième année du règne de Jéhu. Il régna 40 ans à Jérusalem; sa mère s’appelait Sibya, elle était de Bersabée.
3 Al his life Jehoash did what Yahweh regards as right, having been instructed by Jehoiada the priest.	3 Joas fit ce qui plaît à Yahvé tout le temps qu’il fut sous la tutelle du prêtre Yoyada.
4 The high places, however, were not abolished, and the people stil offered sacrifices and incense onthe high places.	4 Cependant les Hauts-Lieux ne disparurent pas, le peuple continuait à sacrifier et à brûler de l’encens sur les Hauts-Lieux.
5 Jehoash said to the priests, 'Al the money from the sacred revenues brought to the Temple ofYahweh, the money from personal taxes, and al the money voluntarily offered to the Temple-	5 Joas dit aux prêtres: “Tout l’argent qu’on apporte dans la Maison de Yahvé, l’argent des taxes personnelles comme l’argent qui provient des offrandes volontaires pour la Maison,
6 the priests are to receive this individual y from people of their acquaintance and wil carry out al therepairs to the Temple which need to be made.'	6 chacun des prêtres le recevra des gens qui s’adressent à lui. Ensuite ils s’en serviront pour réparer la Maison partout où cela sera nécessaire.”
7 Now in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash the priests had done no repairs to the Temple;	7 Or, à la vingt-troisième année du règne de Joas, les prêtres n’avaient pas encore réparé la Maison.
8 so King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the other priests. 'Why are you not repairing theTemple?' he asked. 'You are no longer to accept money from people of your acquaintance but are to hand it overfor the Temple repairs.'	8 Le roi Joas appela donc le prêtre Yoyada et les autres prêtres; il leur dit: “Pourquoi ne réparez-vous pas la Maison? Désormais vous ne prendrez plus l’argent de ceux qui s’adressent à vous, mais vous le verserez pour la réparation du Temple.”
9 The priests agreed to accept no money from the people and no longer to be responsible for repairs tothe Temple.	9 Les prêtres acceptèrent de ne plus recevoir cet argent et de ne plus avoir à leur charge les réparations du Temple.
10 Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in the lid and placed it beside the pil ar, to the right ofthe entry to the Temple of Yahweh; in it the priests who guarded the threshold put al the money which was givenfor the Temple of Yahweh.	10 Le prêtre Yoyada prit donc un coffre et fit percer un trou dans le couvercle; il le mit à côté de l’autel, sur la droite quand on entre dans la Maison de Yahvé. Les prêtres qui gardaient la porte du Temple y déposaient tout l’argent que l’on apportait pour la Maison de Yahvé.
11 Whenever they saw that there was a great deal of money in the chest, the king's secretary wouldcome, and they would empty it out and reckon the money then in the Temple of Yahweh.	11 Quand ils voyaient pas mal d’argent dans le coffre, le secrétaire du roi et le grand prêtre montaient pour ramasser et compter cet argent qui se trouvait dans la Maison de Yahvé.
12 Once checked, they paid this money over to the masters of works attached to the Temple of Yahweh,and these in turn spent it on carpenters and builders working on the Temple of Yahweh,	12 Une fois l’argent compté, on le remettait à ceux qui faisaient le travail et qui étaient chargés d’entretenir la Maison de Yahvé; ils l’utilisaient pour les charpentiers et les ouvriers qui travaillaient dans la Maison de Yahvé,
13 on masons and stonecutters, and on buying timber and dressed stone to be used for repairs to theTemple of Yahweh; in short, for al the costs of the Temple repairs.	13 pour les maçons et les tailleurs de pierres, et aussi pour acheter le bois et les pierres de taille des réparations du Temple de Yahvé; en un mot, ils le dépensaient pour toutes les réparations nécessaires dans la Maison de Yahvé.
14 But no silver basins, knives, sprinkling bowls, trumpets or gold or silver objects were made for theTemple of Yahweh out of the money presented,	14 Avec l’argent apporté pour la Maison de Yahvé, on ne faisait ni cuvettes d’argent, ni couteaux, ni cruchettes, ni trompettes, ni aucun objet d’or ou d’argent pour la Maison de Yahvé,
15 which was al given to the masters of works for repairing the Temple of Yahweh.	15 mais on le remettait à ceux qui faisaient le travail et ils s’en servaient pour réparer la Maison de Yahvé.
16 No accounts were kept with the men to whom the money was paid over to be spent on the workmen,since they were honest in their work.	16 On ne demandait aucun compte aux hommes à qui l’on remettait l’argent pour payer les travailleurs, car c’étaient des hommes honnêtes.
17 Money offered in expiation of an offence or of a sin was not given to the Temple of Yahweh; that wasfor the priests.	17 Seul l’argent des sacrifices pour le péché et des sacrifices de réparation n’était pas apporté au Temple de Yahvé: il était pour les prêtres.
18 At that time Hazael king of Aram went to war against Gath, and captured it; he then prepared to attackJerusalem.	18 C’est en ce temps-là qu’Hazaël, roi d’Aram, monta pour combattre Gat et s’en empara. Hazaël voulait attaquer Jérusalem,
19 Jehoash king of Judah took all the sacred offerings dedicated by his ancestors, the kings of Judah,Jehoshaphat, Jehoram and Ahaziah, with those which he himself had dedicated, and all the gold which was tobe found in the treasuries of the Temple of Yahweh and of the palace; he sent it all to Hazael king of Aram, whoretired from Jerusalem.	19 mais Joas, roi de Juda, prit tous les objets consacrés par Josaphat, Joram et Okozias, ses ancêtres, les rois de Juda. Il prit aussi tout ce qu’il avait consacré lui-même, tout l’or qui se trouvait dans les trésors du Temple de Yahvé et du palais royal, et il l’envoya à Hazaël, roi d’Aram. Celui-ci s’éloigna de Jérusalem.

21 His own retainers rebelled and hatched a plot; they murdered Joash in the palace of the Millo . . .	21 Les serviteurs de Joas firent une conspiration pour l’assassiner à Beth-Millo;
22 Jozacar son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer were the retainers who struck the blows fromwhich he died.
