NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
When Solomon had finished building the Temple of Yahweh, the royal palace and everything else whichSolomon had wanted to do,1 Factum est autem cum perfecisset Salomon aedificium domus Domini et aedificium regis et omne, quod optaverat et voluerat facere,
Yahweh appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon.2 apparuit ei Dominus secundo, sicut apparuerat ei in Gabaon.
Yahweh said to him, 'I have heard your prayer and the entreaty which you have before me. I consecratethis temple which you have built: I place my name there for ever; my eyes and my heart wil be there always.3 Dixitque Dominus ad eum: “ Exaudivi orationem tuam et deprecationem tuam, quam deprecatus es coram me; sanctificavi domum hanc, quam aedificasti, ut ponerem nomen meum ibi in sempiternum; et erunt oculi mei et cor meum ibi cunctis diebus.
For your part, if you walk before me in innocence of heart and in honesty, like your father David, if youdo everything that I command and keep my laws and my ordinances,4 Tu quoque, si ambulaveris coram me, sicut ambulavit David pater tuus in simplicitate cordis et in aequitate, et feceris omnia, quae praecepi tibi, et legitima mea et iudicia mea servaveris,
I shal make your royal throne secure over Israel for ever, as I promised your father David when I said,"You wil never lack for a man on the throne of Israel."5 ponam thronum regni tui super Israel in sempiternum, sicut locutus sum David patri tuo dicens: Non auferetur de genere tuo vir de solio Israel.
But if you turn away from me, either you or your descendants, and instead of keeping mycommandments and laws which I have laid down for you, you go and serve other gods and worship them,6 Si autem aversione aversi fueritis vos et filii vestri non sequentes me nec custodientes mandata mea et decreta mea, quae proposui vobis, sed abieritis et colueritis deos alienos et adoraveritis eos,
then I shal banish Israel from the country which I have given them, and shall disown this Temple which Ihave consecrated for my name, and Israel will be a proverb and a byword among al peoples.7 auferam Israel de superficie terrae, quam dedi eis, et templum, quod sanctificavi nomini meo, proiciam a conspectu meo; eritque Israel in proverbium et in fabulam cunctis populis,
As for this once-exalted Temple, everyone who passes by wil be appal ed, and they wil whistle and say,"Why has Yahweh treated this country and this Temple like this?"8 et domus haec erit in ruinas. Omnis, qui transierit per eam, stupebit et sibilabit et dicet: “Quare fecit Dominus sic terrae huic et domui huic?”.
And the answer wil be, "Because they deserted Yahweh their God who brought their ancestors out ofEgypt, and they adopted other gods and worshipped and served them; that is why Yahweh has brought al thesedisasters on them." '9 Et respondebunt: “Quia dereliquerunt Dominum Deum suum, qui eduxit patres eorum de terra Aegypti, et secuti sunt deos alienos et adoraverunt eos et coluerunt eos; idcirco induxit Dominus super eos omne malum hoc” ”.
At the end of the twenty years that it took Solomon to erect the two buildings, the Temple of Yahwehand the royal palace10 Expletis autem annis viginti, postquam aedificaverat Salomon duas domos, id est domum Domini et domum regis
(Hiram king of Tyre had provided Solomon with al the cedar wood, juniper wood and gold that hewanted), King Solomon gave Hiram twenty towns in the territory of Galilee.11 — Hiram rege Tyri praebente Salomoni ligna cedrina et abiegna et aurum iuxta omne quod opus habuerat — tunc dedit Salomon Hiram viginti oppida in terra Galilaeae.
But when Hiram came from Tyre to view the towns that Solomon had given him, he was not pleasedwith them.12 Et egressus est Hiram de Tyro, ut videret oppida, quae dederat ei Salomon, et non placuerunt ei;
He said, 'What kind of towns are these you have given me, brother?' And to this day they are known as'cabul-land'.13 et ait: “ Haeccine sunt civitates, quas dedisti mihi, frater? ”. Et appellavit eas terram Chabul usque in diem hanc.
Hiram sent the king one hundred and twenty talents of gold.14 Misit quoque Hiram ad regem centum viginti talenta auri.
This is an account of the forced labour levied by King Solomon for building the Temple of Yahweh, hisown palace, the Mil o and the fortifications of Jerusalem, Hazor, Megiddo, Gezer15 Haec est summa indictionis, quam constituit rex Salomon ad aedificandam domum Domini et domum suam et Mello et murum Ierusalem et Asor et Mageddo et Gazer.
(Pharaoh king of Egypt mounted an expedition, captured Gezer, burnt it down and massacred theCanaanites living there; he then gave the town as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon's wife,16 Pharao rex Aegypti ascendit et cepit Gazer succenditque eam igni et Chananaeum, qui habitabat in civitate, interfecit; et dedit eam in dotem filiae suae uxori Salomonis.
and Solomon rebuilt Gezer), Lower Beth-Horon,17 Aedificavit ergo Salomon Gazer et Bethoron inferiorem
Baalath, Tamar in the desert, inside the country,18 et Baalath et Thamar in terra solitudinis
al Solomon's storage towns owned by Solomon, al the towns for his chariots and horses, andwhatever Solomon was pleased to build in Jerusalem, in the Lebanon and in al the countries under his rule.19 et omnes civitates horreorum, quae ad se pertinebant, et civitates curruum et civitates equorum et quodcumque ei placuit, ut aedificaret in Ierusalem et in Libano et in omni terra potestatis suae.
Al those who survived of the Amorite, Hittite, Perizzite, Hivite and Jebusite peoples, who were notIsraelites-20 Universum populum, qui remanserat de Amorraeis et Hetthaeis et Pherezaeis et Hevaeis et Iebusaeis, qui non erant de filiis Israel,
their descendants still remaining in the country on whom the Israelites had not been able to enforce thecurse of destruction -- these Solomon levied as forced labourers, as is stil the case today.21 horum filios, qui remanserant post eos in terra, quos scilicet non potuerant filii Israel exterminare, fecit Salomon tributarios usque in diem hanc.
Solomon did not, however, impose forced labour on the Israelites; for they were soldiers, his officials, his administrators, his officers and his chariot and cavalry commanders.22 De filiis autem Israel non constituit Salomon servire quemquam, sed erant viri bellatores et ministri eius et principes et pugnatores eius et praefecti curruum et equitum.
There were five hundred and fifty officials in charge of the foremen over Solomon's work, whosupervised the people employed on the work.23 Erant autem principes eorum, qui super omnia opera Salomonis praepositi erant, quingenti quinquaginta; qui habebant subiectum populum et statutis operibus imperabant.
After Pharaoh's daughter had moved from the City of David up to the palace which he had built for her,he then built the Mil o.24 Filia autem pharaonis ascendit de civitate David in domum suam, quam aedificaverat ei; tunc aedificavit Mello.
Three times a year Solomon presented burnt offerings and communion sacrifices on the altar which hehad built for Yahweh and set his burnt offerings smoking before Yahweh. Thus he completed the Temple.25 Offerebat quoque Salomon tribus vicibus per annos singulos holocausta et pacificas victimas super altare, quod aedificaverat Domino, et adolebat coram Domino; perfectumque est templum.
King Solomon equipped a fleet at Ezion-Geber, which is near Elath on the shores of the Red Sea, inEdom.26 Classem quoque fecit rex Salomon in Asiongaber, quae est iuxta Ailath in litore maris Rubri in terra Idumaea.
For this fleet Hiram sent men of his, experienced sailors, to serve with those in Solomon's service.27 Misitque Hiram in classe illa servos suos viros nauticos gnaros maris cum servis Salomonis.
They went to Ophir and took on four hundred and twenty talents of gold, which they brought back toSolomon.28 Qui, cum venissent in Ophir, sumptum inde aurum quadringentorum viginti talentorum detulerunt ad regem Salomonem.
