NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
God said to Jacob, 'Move on, go to Bethel and settle there. Make an altar there for the God whoappeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.'1 Locutus est Deus ad Iacob: “ Surge et ascende Bethel et habita ibi; facque altare Deo, qui apparuit tibi, quando fugiebas Esau fratrem tuum ”.
Jacob said to his family and to all who were with him, 'Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you;cleanse yourselves, and change your clothes.2 Iacob vero, convocata omni domo sua, ait: “ Abigite deos alienos, qui in medio vestri sunt, et mundamini ac mutate vestimenta vestra.
We must move on and go to Bethel. There I shall make an altar for the God who heard me when I wasin distress, and gave me his help on the journey I made.'3 Surgamus et ascendamus in Bethel, ut faciamus ibi altare Deo, qui exaudivit me in die tribulationis meae et socius fuit itineris mei ”.
They gave Jacob al the foreign gods in their possession, and the earrings that they were wearing.Jacob buried them under the oak tree near Shechem.4 Dederunt ergo ei omnes deos alienos, quos habebant, et inaures, quae erant in auribus eorum; at ille infodit ea subter Quercum, quae est prope urbem Sichem.
They broke camp; a divine terror struck the towns round about, and no one pursued the sons ofJacob.5 Cumque profecti essent, terror Dei invasit omnes per circuitum civitates, et non sunt ausi persequi filios Iacob.
When Jacob arrived at Luz in Canaan -- that is, Bethel-and al the people with him,6 Venit igitur Iacob Luzam, quae est in terra Chanaan, id est Bethel, ipse et omnis populus cum eo.
he built an altar there and named the place El-Bethel, since it was there that God had appeared to himwhen he was fleeing from his brother.7 Aedificavitque ibi altare et appellavit nomen loci illius Deus Bethel; ibi enim apparuit ei Deus, cum fugeret fratrem suum.
Deborah, who had been Rebekah's nurse, died and was buried below Bethel, under the oak tree; sothey named it the Oak of Tears.8 Eodem tempore mortua est Debora nutrix Rebeccae et sepulta est ad radices Bethel subter quercum; vocatumque est nomen loci illius Quercus fletus.
God again appeared to Jacob on his return from Paddan-Aram, and blessed him.9 Apparuit iterum Deus Iacob, postquam reversus est de Paddanaram, benedixitque ei
God said to him, 'Your name is Jacob, but from now on you wil be cal ed not Jacob but Israel.' Thushe came by the name Israel.10 dicens: “ Non vocaberis ultra Iacob, sed Israel erit nomen tuum ”, et appellavit eum Israel.
God said to him, 'I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations,wil descend from you, and kings will issue from your loins.11 Dixitque ei: “ Ego Deus omnipotens. Cresce et multiplicare; gens et congregatio nationum erunt ex te, reges de lumbis tuis egredientur.
The country which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I now give to you; and this country I shal give toyour descendants after you.'12 Terramque, quam dedi Abraham et Isaac, dabo tibi; et semini tuo post te dabo terram hanc ”.
Then God went up from him.13 Et ascendit ab eo Deus.
Jacob raised a monument at the spot where he had spoken to him, a standing-stone, on which hemade a libation and poured oil.14 Ille vero erexit titulum lapideum in loco, quo locutus ei fuerat Deus, libans super eum libamina et effundens oleum
Jacob named the place Bethel where God had spoken to him.15 vocansque nomen loci illius Bethel.
They left Bethel, and while they were stil some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labour, andher pains were severe.16 Egressi sunt de Bethel. Et adhuc spatium quoddam erat usque ad Ephratham, cum parturiret Rachel;
When her labour was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, 'Do not worry, this is going to be anotherboy.'17 ob difficultatem partus periclitari coepit, dixitque ei obstetrix: “ Noli timere, quia et hac vice habes filium ”.
At the moment when she breathed her last, for she was dying, she named him Ben-Oni. His father,however, named him Benjamin.18 Egrediente autem anima et imminente iam morte, vocavit nomen filii sui Benoni (id est Filius doloris mei); pater vero appellavit eum Beniamin (id est Filius dextrae).
So Rachel died and was buried on the road to Ephrath, now Bethlehem.19 Mortua est ergo Rachel et sepulta est in via, quae ducit Ephratham; haec est Bethlehem.
Jacob raised a monument on her grave, that same monument of Rachel's Tomb which is theretoday.20 Erexitque Iacob titulum super sepulcrum eius; hic est titulus monumenti Rachel usque in praesentem diem.
Israel left and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-Eder.21 Egressus inde Israel, fixit tabernaculum trans Magdaleder (id est Turris gregis).
While Israel was living in that district, Reuben went and slept with Bilhah his father's concubine, andIsrael found out. The sons of Jacob were now twelve.22 Cumque habitaret in illa regione, abiit Ruben et dormivit cum Bilha concubina patris sui; quod illum minime latuit.
Erant autem filii Iacob duodecim.
The sons of Leah: Jacob's eldest son Reuben, then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.23 Filii Liae: primogenitus Ruben et Simeon et Levi et Iudas et Issachar et Zabulon.
The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.24 Filii Rachel: Ioseph et Beniamin.
The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's slave-girl: Dan and Naphtali.25 Filii Bilhae ancillae Rachelis: Dan et Nephthali.
The sons of Zilpah, Leah's slave-girl: Gad and Asher. These were the sons born to Jacob in Paddan-Aram.26 Filii Zelphae ancillae Liae: Gad et Aser. Hi sunt filii Iacob, qui nati sunt ei in Paddanaram.
Jacob came home to his father Isaac at Mamre, at Kiriath-Arba -- now Hebron -- where Abraham andIsaac had stayed.27 Venit Iacob ad Isaac patrem suum in Mambre Cariatharbe, id est Hebron, ubi peregrinatus est Abraham et Isaac.
Isaac was one hundred and eighty years old28 Et completi sunt dies Isaac centum octoginta annorum;
when he breathed his last. He died and was gathered to his people, an old man who had enjoyed hisful span of life. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.29 consumptusque aetate mortuus est et appositus est populo suo senex et plenus dierum. Et sepelierunt eum Esau et Iacob filii sui.
