Genesis 35

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 God said to Jacob, 'Move on, go to Bethel and settle there. Make an altar there for the God whoappeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.'	1 Dieu dit à Jacob: "Debout! Monte à Béthel et fixe-toi là-bas. Tu y feras un autel au Dieu qui t'estapparu lorsque tu fuyais la présence de ton frère Esaü."
2 Jacob said to his family and to all who were with him, 'Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you;cleanse yourselves, and change your clothes.	2 Jacob dit à sa famille et à tous ceux qui étaient avec lui:"Otez les dieux étrangers qui sont au milieude vous, purifiez-vous et changez vos vêtements.
3 We must move on and go to Bethel. There I shall make an altar for the God who heard me when I wasin distress, and gave me his help on the journey I made.'	3 Partons et montons à Béthel! J'y ferai un autel au Dieu qui m'a exaucé lorsque j'étais dansl'angoisse et m'a assisté dans le voyage que j'ai fait."
4 They gave Jacob al the foreign gods in their possession, and the earrings that they were wearing.Jacob buried them under the oak tree near Shechem.	4 Ils donnèrent à Jacob tous les dieux étrangers qu'ils possédaient et les anneaux qu'ils portaient auxoreilles, et Jacob les enfouit sous le chêne qui est près de Sichem.
5 They broke camp; a divine terror struck the towns round about, and no one pursued the sons ofJacob.	5 Ils levèrent le camp et une terreur divine tomba sur les villes d'alentour: on ne poursuivit pas lesfils de Jacob.
6 When Jacob arrived at Luz in Canaan -- that is, Bethel-and al the people with him,	6 Jacob arriva à Luz, au pays de Canaan, -- c'est Béthel, -- lui et tous les gens qu'il avait.
7 he built an altar there and named the place El-Bethel, since it was there that God had appeared to himwhen he was fleeing from his brother.	7 Là, il construisit un autel et appela le lieu El-Béthel, car Dieu s'y était révélé à lui lorsqu'il fuyait laprésence de son frère.
8 Deborah, who had been Rebekah's nurse, died and was buried below Bethel, under the oak tree; sothey named it the Oak of Tears.	8 Alors mourut Débora, la nourrice de Rébecca, et elle fut ensevelie au-dessous de Béthel, sous lechêne; aussi l'appela-t-on le Chêne-des-Pleurs.
9 God again appeared to Jacob on his return from Paddan-Aram, and blessed him.	9 Dieu apparut encore à Jacob, à son retour de Paddân-Aram, et il le bénit.
10 God said to him, 'Your name is Jacob, but from now on you wil be cal ed not Jacob but Israel.' Thushe came by the name Israel.	10 Dieu lui dit: "Ton nom est Jacob, mais on ne t'appellera plus Jacob, ton nom sera Israël." Aussil'appela-t-on Israël.
11 God said to him, 'I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations,wil descend from you, and kings will issue from your loins.	11 Dieu lui dit: "Je suis El Shaddaï. Sois fécond et multiplie. Une nation, une assemblée de nationsnaîtra de toi et des rois sortiront de tes reins.
12 The country which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I now give to you; and this country I shal give toyour descendants after you.'	12 Le pays que j'ai donné à Abraham et à Isaac, je te le donne, et à ta postérité après toi je donneraice pays."
13 Then God went up from him.	13 Et Dieu remonta d'auprès de lui.
14 Jacob raised a monument at the spot where he had spoken to him, a standing-stone, on which hemade a libation and poured oil.	14 Jacob dressa une stèle à l'endroit où il lui avait parlé, une stèle de pierre, sur laquelle il fit unelibation et versa de l'huile.
15 Jacob named the place Bethel where God had spoken to him.	15 Et Jacob donna le nom de Béthel au lieu où Dieu lui avait parlé.
16 They left Bethel, and while they were stil some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labour, andher pains were severe.	16 Ils partirent de Béthel. Il restait un bout de chemin pour arriver à Ephrata quand Rachel accoucha.Ses couches furent pénibles
17 When her labour was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, 'Do not worry, this is going to be anotherboy.'	17 et, comme elle accouchait difficilement, la sage-femme lui dit: "Rassure-toi, c'est encore un filsque tu as!"
18 At the moment when she breathed her last, for she was dying, she named him Ben-Oni. His father,however, named him Benjamin.	18 Au moment de rendre l'âme, car elle se mourait, elle le nomma Ben-Oni, mais son père l'appelaBenjamin.
19 So Rachel died and was buried on the road to Ephrath, now Bethlehem.	19 Rachel mourut et fut enterrée sur le chemin d'Ephrata -- c'est Bethléem.
20 Jacob raised a monument on her grave, that same monument of Rachel's Tomb which is theretoday.	20 Jacob dressa une stèle sur son tombeau; c'est la stèle du tombeau de Rachel, qui existe encoreaujourd'hui.
21 Israel left and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-Eder.	21 Israël partit et planta sa tente au-delà de Migdal-Edèr.
22 While Israel was living in that district, Reuben went and slept with Bilhah his father's concubine, andIsrael found out. The sons of Jacob were now twelve.	22 Pendant qu'Israël habitait dans cette région, Ruben alla coucher avec Bilha, la concubine de sonpère, et Israël l'apprit. Les fils de Jacob furent au nombre de douze.
23 The sons of Leah: Jacob's eldest son Reuben, then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.	23 Les fils de Léa: le premier-né de Jacob, Ruben, puis Siméon, Lévi, Juda, Issachar et Zabulon.
24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.	24 Les fils de Rachel: Joseph et Benjamin.
25 The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's slave-girl: Dan and Naphtali.	25 Les fils de Bilha, la servante de Rachel: Dan et Nephtali.
26 The sons of Zilpah, Leah's slave-girl: Gad and Asher. These were the sons born to Jacob in Paddan-Aram.	26 Les fils de Zilpa, la servante de Léa: Gad et Asher. Tels sontles fils qui furent enfantés à Jacob enPaddân-Aram.
27 Jacob came home to his father Isaac at Mamre, at Kiriath-Arba -- now Hebron -- where Abraham andIsaac had stayed.	27 Jacob arriva chez son père Isaac, à Mambré, à Qiryat-Arba, -- c'est Hébron, -- où séjournèrentAbraham et Isaac.
28 Isaac was one hundred and eighty years old	28 La durée de la vie d'Isaac fut de 180 ans,
29 when he breathed his last. He died and was gathered to his people, an old man who had enjoyed hisful span of life. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.	29 et Isaac expira. Il mourut et il fut réuni à sa parenté, âgé et rassasié de jours; ses fils Esaü et Jacobl'ensevelirent.
