NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Do not rebuke an older man, but appeal to him as a father. Treat younger men as brothers,1 An ancient man rebuke not, but entreat him as a father: young men, as brethren:
older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters with complete purity.2 Old women, as mothers: young women, as sisters, in all chastity.
Honor widows who are truly widows.3 Honour widows, that are widows indeed.
But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let these first learn to perform their religious duty to their own family and to make recompense to their parents, for this is pleasing to God.4 But if any widow have children, or grandchildren, let her learn first to govern her own house, and to make a return of duty to her parents: for this is acceptable before God.
The real widow, who is all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.5 But she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, let her trust in God, and continue in supplications and prayers night and day.
But the one who is self-indulgent is dead while she lives.6 For she that liveth in pleasures, is dead while she is living.
Command this, so that they may be irreproachable.7 And this give in charge, that they may be blameless.
And whoever does not provide for relatives and especially family members has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.8 But if any man have not care of his own, and especially of those of his house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years old, married only once,9 Let a widow be chosen of no less than threescore years of age, who hath been the wife of one husband.
with a reputation for good works, namely, that she has raised children, practiced hospitality, washed the feet of the holy ones, helped those in distress, involved herself in every good work.10 Having testimony for her good works, if she have brought up children, if she have received to harbour, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have ministered to them that suffer tribulation, if she have diligently followed every good work.
But exclude younger widows, for when their sensuality estranges them from Christ, they want to marry11 But the younger widows avoid. For when they have grown wanton in Christ, they will marry:
and will incur condemnation for breaking their first pledge.12 Having damnation, because they have made void their first faith.
And furthermore, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers but gossips and busybodies as well, talking about things that ought not to be mentioned.13 And withal being idle they learn to go about from house to house: and are not only idle, but tattlers also, and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
So I would like younger widows to marry, have children, and manage a home, so as to give the adversary no pretext for maligning us.14 I will therefore that the younger should marry, bear children, be mistresses of families, give no occasion to the adversary to speak evil.
For some have already turned away to follow Satan.15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.
If any woman believer has widowed relatives, she must assist them; the church is not to be burdened, so that it will be able to help those who are truly widows.16 If any of the faithful have widows, let him minister to them, and let not the church be charged: that there may be sufficient for them that are widows indeed.
Presbyters who preside well deserve double honor, especially those who toil in preaching and teaching.17 Let the priests that rule well, be esteemed worthy of double honour: especially they who labour in the word and doctrine:
For the scripture says, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is threshing," and, "A worker deserves his pay."18 For the scripture saith: Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn: and, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
Do not accept an accusation against a presbyter unless it is supported by two or three witnesses.19 Against a priest receive not an accusation, but under two or three witnesses.
Reprimand publicly those who do sin, so that the rest also will be afraid.20 Them that sin reprove before all: that the rest also may have fear.
I charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels to keep these rules without prejudice, doing nothing out of favoritism.21 I charge thee before God, and Christ Jesus, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by declining to either side.
Do not lay hands too readily on anyone, and do not share in another's sins. Keep yourself pure.22 Impose not hands lightly upon any man, neither be partaker of other men's sins. Keep thyself chaste.
Stop drinking only water, but have a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.23 Do not still drink water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake, and thy frequent infirmities.
Some people's sins are public, preceding them to judgment; but other people are followed by their sins.24 Some men's sins are manifest, going before to judgment: and some men they follow after.
Similarly, good works are also public; and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.25 In like manner also good deeds are manifest: and they that are otherwise, cannot be hid.
