1 Do not rebuke an older man, but appeal to him as a father. Treat younger men as brothers,	1 Non rimproverare l'uomo d'età, ma pregalo come un padre; i giovani, come fratelli,
2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters with complete purity.	2 le attempate, come madri; le giovani, come sorelle, con tutta purezza.
3 Honor widows who are truly widows.	3 Onora le vedove, quelle che sono tali veramente.
4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let these first learn to perform their religious duty to their own family and to make recompense to their parents, for this is pleasing to God.	4 Ma se una vedova ha dei figlioli o dei nipoti, impari prima a governare la sua casa, a rendere il contraccambio ai genitori, essendo questo gradito davanti a Dio.
5 The real widow, who is all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.	5 Quella poi che è veramente vedova e sola al mondo, speri in Dio e perseveri notte e giorno nelle suppliche e nelle preghiere:
6 But the one who is self-indulgent is dead while she lives.	6 quella che si abbandona ai piaceri, anche vivendo, è morta.
7 Command this, so that they may be irreproachable.	7 Fa loro queste raccomandazioni affinchè siano irreprensibili.
8 And whoever does not provide for relatives and especially family members has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.	8 Che se uno non pensa ai suoi, e specialmente a quelli di casa, ha rinnegata la fede, ed è peggiore d'un infedele.
9 Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years old, married only once,	9 La vedova da eleggersi non abbia meno di sessant'anni, sia stata moglie di un solo marito,
10 with a reputation for good works, namely, that she has raised children, practiced hospitality, washed the feet of the holy ones, helped those in distress, involved herself in every good work.	10 e sia stimata per le sue buone opere, per aver cioè allevati i figlioli, praticata l'ospitalità, lavati i piedi ai santi, dato soccorso agli infelici, per esser stata dietro ad ogni opera buona.
11 But exclude younger widows, for when their sensuality estranges them from Christ, they want to marry	11 Ma scarta le vedove giovani, perchè dopo essersi abbandonate alla mollezza nel servizio di Cristo, bramano rimaritarsi;
12 and will incur condemnation for breaking their first pledge.	12 e sono da condannarsi per aver rotta la prima fede,
13 And furthermore, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers but gossips and busybodies as well, talking about things that ought not to be mentioned.	13 e nel medesimo tempo, essendo sfaccendate, s'abituano a gironzare per le case, e non sfaccendate soltanto, ma cianciatrici, e curiose, cinguettando di ciò che non conviene.
14 So I would like younger widows to marry, have children, and manage a home, so as to give the adversary no pretext for maligning us.	14 Voglio dunque che le giovani prendano marito, rilevino i figlioli, facciano da madri di famiglia e non diano da ridire all'avversario,
15 For some have already turned away to follow Satan.	15 perché alcune si son già sviate per seguitare Satana.
16 If any woman believer has widowed relatives, she must assist them; the church is not to be burdened, so that it will be able to help those who are truly widows.	16 Se un fedele ha delle vedove, le mantenga lui e non ne sia aggravata la Chiesa, affinchè essa possa mantenere quelle che veramente sono vedove.
17 Presbyters who preside well deserve double honor, especially those who toil in preaching and teaching.	17 I preti che governano bene sian reputati degni di doppio onore, specialmente quelli che si affaticano nella predicazione e nell'insegnamento.
18 For the scripture says, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is threshing," and, "A worker deserves his pay."	18 Dice infatti la Scrittura: « Non metter la museruola al bue che trebbia », « degno è l'operaio della sua mercede ».
19 Do not accept an accusation against a presbyter unless it is supported by two or three witnesses.	19 Contro un prete non ricevere accuse, se non son provate da due o tre testimoni;
20 Reprimand publicly those who do sin, so that the rest also will be afraid.	20 ma quelli che mancano riprendili in faccia a tutti, affinchè ne temano anche gli altri.
21 I charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels to keep these rules without prejudice, doing nothing out of favoritism.	21 Ti scongiuro dinanzi à Dio, a Cristo Gesù e agli Angeli eletti, d'osservare queste cose senza prevenzione, e di non far nulla con parzialità.
22 Do not lay hands too readily on anyone, and do not share in another's sins. Keep yourself pure.	22 Non aver fretta d'imporre le mani ad alcuno, e non prender parte ai peccati degli altri. Conservati puro.
23 Stop drinking only water, but have a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.	23 Non continuare a bere soltanto acqua, ma fa uso d'un po' di vino a causa del tuo stomaco e delle tue frequenti malattie.
24 Some people's sins are public, preceding them to judgment; but other people are followed by their sins.	24 I peccati di certe persone sono manifesti avanti il giudizio, altri invece si scoprono dopo;
25 Similarly, good works are also public; and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.	25 così pure accade che le buone opere son manifeste; e quelle che non lo sono non possono tenersi nascoste.
