NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
After this, Jesus moved about within Galilee; but he did not wish to travel in Judea, because the Jews were trying to kill him.1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
But the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near.2 Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.
So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.3 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
No one works in secret if he wants to be known publicly. If you do these things, manifest yourself to the world."4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.
For his brothers did not believe in him.5 For neither did his brethren believe in him.
So Jesus said to them, "My time is not yet here, but the time is always right for you.6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify to it that its works are evil.7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, because my time has not yet been fulfilled."8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.
After he had said this, he stayed on in Galilee.9 When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.
But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, he himself also went up, not openly but (as it were) in secret.10 But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
The Jews were looking for him at the feast and saying, "Where is he?"11 Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
And there was considerable murmuring about him in the crowds. Some said, "He is a good man," (while) others said, "No; on the contrary, he misleads the crowd."12 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.
Still, no one spoke openly about him because they were afraid of the Jews.13 Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.
When the feast was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple area and began to teach.14 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
The Jews were amazed and said, "How does he know scripture without having studied?"15 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not my own but is from the one who sent me.16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
Whoever chooses to do his will shall know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speak on my own.17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
Whoever speaks on his own seeks his own glory, but whoever seeks the glory of the one who sent him is truthful, and there is no wrong in him.18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
The crowd answered, "You are possessed! Who is trying to kill you?"20 The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?
Jesus answered and said to them, "I performed one work and all of you are amazed21 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
because of it. Moses gave you circumcision--not that it came from Moses but rather from the patriarchs--and you circumcise a man on the sabbath.22 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
If a man can receive circumcision on a sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a whole person well on a sabbath?23 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?
Stop judging by appearances, but judge justly."24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
So some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem said, "Is he not the one they are trying to kill?25 Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
And look, he is speaking openly and they say nothing to him. Could the authorities have realized that he is the Messiah?26 But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
But we know where he is from. When the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from."27 Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.
So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was teaching and said, "You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true.28 Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.
I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me."29 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come.30 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
But many of the crowd began to believe in him, and said, "When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man has done?"31 And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring about him to this effect, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent guards to arrest him.32 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.
So Jesus said, "I will be with you only a little while longer, and then I will go to the one who sent me.33 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.
You will look for me but not find (me), and where I am you cannot come."34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.
So the Jews said to one another, "Where is he going that we will not find him? Surely he is not going to the dispersion among the Greeks to teach the Greeks, is he?35 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?
What is the meaning of his saying, 'You will look for me and not find (me), and where I am you cannot come'?"36 What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?
On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and exclaimed, "Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink.37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: 'Rivers of living water will flow from within him.'"38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
He said this in reference to the Spirit that those who came to believe in him were to receive. There was, of course, no Spirit yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Some in the crowd who heard these words said, "This is truly the Prophet."40 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
Others said, "This is the Messiah." But others said, "The Messiah will not come from Galilee, will he?41 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?
Does not scripture say that the Messiah will be of David's family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?"42 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
So a division occurred in the crowd because of him.43 So there was a division among the people because of him.
Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why did you not bring him?"45 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?
The guards answered, "Never before has anyone spoken like this one."46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
So the Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived?47 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?
Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed."49 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.
Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them,50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)
"Does our law condemn a person before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?"51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?
They answered and said to him, "You are not from Galilee also, are you? Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee."52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
Then each went to his own house,
