After this, Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee (of Tiberias).1 After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee -- or of Tiberias-
A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick.2 and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he had done in curing the sick.
Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.3 Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples.
The Jewish feast of Passover was near.4 The time of the Jewish Passover was near.
When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, "Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?"5 Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, 'Where can we buy some bread forthese people to eat?'
He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do.6 He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do.
Philip answered him, "Two hundred days' wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little (bit)."7 Philip answered, 'Two hundred denari would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.'
One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said,
"There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?"9 'Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?'
Jesus said, "Have the people recline." Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number.10 Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass there, and as many as fivethousand men sat down.
Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he thendid the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted.
When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, "Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted."12 When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing iswasted.'
So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat.13 So they picked them up and fil ed twelve large baskets with scraps left over from the meal of fivebarley loaves.
When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, "This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world."14 Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into theworld.'
Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone.15 Jesus, as he realised they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, fled back tothe hil s alone.
When it was evening, his disciples went down to the sea,16 That evening the disciples went down to the shore of the sea
embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum. It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.17 and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the sea. It was getting dark by nowand Jesus had stil not rejoined them.
The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.18 The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough.
When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid.19 They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming towards theboat. They were afraid,
But he said to them, "It is I. Do not be afraid."20 but he said, 'It's me. Don't be afraid.'
They wanted to take him into the boat, but the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading.21 They were ready to take him into the boat, and immediately it reached the shore at the place they weremaking for.
The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat, but only his disciples had left.22 Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and thatJesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves.
Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread when the Lord gave thanks.23 Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten.
When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.24 When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats andcrossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus.
And when they found him across the sea they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"25 When they found him on the other side, they said to him, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?'
Jesus answered them and said, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.26 Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs butbecause you had al the bread you wanted to eat.
Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal."27 Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son ofman wil give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.
So they said to him, "What can we do to accomplish the works of God?"28 Then they said to him, 'What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?'
Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent."29 Jesus gave them this answer, 'This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he hassent.'
So they said to him, "What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do?30 So they said, 'What sign wil you yourself do, the sight of which wil make us believe in you? What workwil you do?
Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"31 Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'
So Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.32 Jesus answered them: In al truth I tel you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, itis my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;
For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."33 for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
So they said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always."34 'Sir,' they said, 'give us that bread always.'
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.35 Jesus answered them: I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me wil ever hunger; no one whobelieves in me wil ever thirst.
But I told you that although you have seen (me), you do not believe.36 But, as I have told you, you can see me and stil you do not believe.
Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me,37 Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me; I will certainly not reject anyone who comes tome,
because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.38 because I have come from heaven, not to do my own wil , but to do the wil of him who sent me.
And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it (on) the last day.39 Now the wil of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of al that he has given to me, but that Ishould raise it up on the last day.
For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him (on) the last day."40 It is my Father's wil that whoever sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and that Ishould raise that person up on the last day.
The Jews murmured about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven,"41 Meanwhile the Jews were complaining to each other about him, because he had said, 'I am the breadthat has come down from heaven.'
and they said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"42 They were saying, 'Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. How can henow say, "I have come down from heaven?" '
Jesus answered and said to them, "Stop murmuring among yourselves.43 Jesus said in reply to them, 'Stop complaining to each other.
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day.44 'No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I wil raise that person up onthe last day.
It is written in the prophets: 'They shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me.45 It is written in the prophets: They wil al be taught by God; everyone who has listened to the Father, and learnt from him, comes to me.
Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.46 Not that anybody has seen the Father, except him who has his being from God: he has seen theFather.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.47 In al truth I tel you, everyone who believes has eternal life.
I am the bread of life.48 I am the bread of life.
Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;49 Your fathers ate manna in the desert and they are dead;
this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die.50 but this is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."51 I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever;and the bread that I shal give is my flesh, for the life of the world.'
The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us (his) flesh to eat?"52 Then the Jews started arguing among themselves, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'
Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.53 Jesus replied to them: In al truth I tell you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink hisblood, you have no life in you.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.54 Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shal raise that person up onthe last day.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in that person.
Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.57 As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me wil also draw lifefrom me.
This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."58 This is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not like the bread our ancestors ate: theyare dead, but anyone who eats this bread wil live for ever.
These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.59 This is what he taught at Capernaum in the synagogue.
Then many of his disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?"60 After hearing it, many of his fol owers said, 'This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?'
Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you?61 Jesus was aware that his fol owers were complaining about it and said, 'Does this disturb you?
What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?62 What if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before?
It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.63 'It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spiritand they are life.
But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him.64 'But there are some of you who do not believe.' For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believeand who was to betray him.
And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father."65 He went on, 'This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.'
As a result of this, many (of) his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.66 After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more.
Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?"67 Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?'
Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.68 Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life,
We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."69 and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.'
Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you twelve? Yet is not one of you a devil?"70 Jesus replied to them, 'Did I not choose the Twelve of you? Yet one of you is a devil.'
He was referring to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot; it was he who would betray him, one of the Twelve.71 He meant Judas son of Simon Iscariot, since this was the man, one of the Twelve, who was to betrayhim.
