1 After this, Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee (of Tiberias).	1 Après cela, Jésus alla sur les bords de la mer de Galilée, du côté de Tibériade.
2 A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick.	2 Une foule nombreuse le suivait, car elle voyait les signes miraculeux qu’il opérait sur les malades.
3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.	3 Jésus monta sur la colline, et là il s’assit avec ses disciples.
4 The Jewish feast of Passover was near.	4 La Pâque, la fête des Juifs, était proche.
5 When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, "Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?"	5 Jésus, donc, leva les yeux et vit cette grande foule qui montait vers lui. Alors il dit à Philippe: "Où allons-nous acheter des pains pour qu’ils aient à manger?”
6 He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do.	6 Jésus disait cela pour voir comment Philippe allait réagir, car lui savait ce qu’il allait faire.
7 Philip answered him, "Two hundred days' wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little (bit)."	7 Philippe lui répond: "Même avec 200 pièces d’argent, le pain ne suffirait pas pour que chacun en ait un morceau.”
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,	8 Un des disciples de Jésus, André, le frère de Simon-Pierre, dit alors:
9 "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?"	9 "Il y a là un garçon avec cinq pains d’orge et deux poissons: nous voilà bien pour nourrir toute cette foule!”
10 Jesus said, "Have the people recline." Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number.	10 Mais Jésus dit: "Faites asseoir tout ce monde.” Il y avait beaucoup d’herbe à cet endroit et les hommes s’assirent; ils étaient environ 5 000.
11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.	11 Jésus donc prend les pains et rend grâce, puis il en donne à ce monde qui s’est mis à l’aise, et il leur donne de même du poisson, autant qu’ils en veulent.
12 When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, "Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted."	12 Quand ils ont tous mangé à leur faim, Jésus dit à ses disciples: "Ramassez les morceaux qui restent, il ne faut rien perdre.”
13 So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat.	13 On les ramasse donc et on remplit douze corbeilles avec les débris des cinq pains d’orge, tout ce qu’on n’avait pas mangé.
14 When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, "This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world."	14 À la vue du signe que Jésus venait de faire, les gens commencèrent à dire: "Cet homme est vraiment le prophète qui doit venir dans le monde!”
15 Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone.	15 Jésus comprit qu’ils allaient l’enlever pour le proclamer roi; alors, une fois de plus, il les laissa et s’en alla tout seul dans la montagne.
16 When it was evening, his disciples went down to the sea,	16 En fin de journée les disciples descendirent vers le rivage.
17 embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum. It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.	17 Il faisait déjà nuit et Jésus n’était toujours pas là avec eux. Ils montèrent donc dans une barque, cherchant à traverser la mer en direction de Capharnaüm,
18 The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.	18 mais la mer était déchaînée car le vent soufflait très fort.
19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid.	19 Quand ils avaient déjà ramé quatre ou cinq kilomètres, ils virent Jésus qui s’approchait de la barque: il marchait sur la mer et les disciples eurent vraiment peur.
20 But he said to them, "It is I. Do not be afraid."	20 Mais lui leur dit: "C’est moi, ne craignez pas.”
21 They wanted to take him into the boat, but the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading.	21 Et comme ils voulaient le prendre dans la barque, au même moment la barque toucha terre à l’endroit vers lequel ils se dirigeaient.
22 The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat, but only his disciples had left.	22 Le lendemain, la foule qui était restée de l’autre côté de la mer se rendit compte qu’il n’y avait pas eu d’autre barque que celle-là et que Jésus n’y était pas monté avec ses disciples: ils étaient partis seuls.
23 Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread when the Lord gave thanks.	23 Cependant des bateaux étaient arrivés de Tibériade près de l’endroit où l’on avait mangé le pain lorsque le Seigneur rendit grâces.
24 When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.	24 Lorsque tous ces gens virent que Jésus n’était pas là, et ses disciples non plus, ils montèrent sur ces bateaux à la recherche de Jésus, et ils vinrent à Capharnaüm.
25 And when they found him across the sea they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"	25 À peine l’eurent-ils trouvé sur l’autre bord du lac qu’ils lui dirent: "Rabbi, Maître, comment es-tu venu?”
26 Jesus answered them and said, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.	26 Alors Jésus leur répond: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis: vous me cherchez, non parce que vous avez vu à travers les signes, mais parce que vous avez eu du pain et que vous avez bien mangé.
27 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal."	27 Travaillez, non pas pour la nourriture qui disparaît, mais pour la nourriture qui demeure et qui devient vie éternelle. C’est le Fils de l’Homme qui vous la donnera; c’est lui que Dieu le Père a marqué de son sceau.”
28 So they said to him, "What can we do to accomplish the works of God?"	28 Alors on lui dit: "Pour travailler aux œuvres de Dieu, que devons-nous faire?”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent."	29 Et Jésus leur répond: "L’œuvre de Dieu, c’est que vous ayez foi en celui qu’il a envoyé.”
30 So they said to him, "What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do?	30 Ils lui disent: "Que fais-tu, quel signe avons-nous vu pour que nous croyions en toi? Qu’es-tu capable de faire?
31 Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"	31 Nos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert, comme dit l’Écriture: Il leur a donné à manger le pain venu du ciel”.
32 So Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.	32 Jésus leur répond: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis: ce n’est pas Moïse qui vous a donné le pain venu du ciel; c’est mon Père qui vous donne le vrai pain descendu du ciel.
33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."	33 Celui qui descend du ciel et donne la vie au monde, c’est lui le pain de Dieu.”
34 So they said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always."	34 Alors les gens lui disent: "Seigneur, donnez-nous donc ce pain.”
35 Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.	35 Et Jésus leur répond: "Je suis le pain de vie: celui qui vient à moi n’aura jamais faim, celui qui croit en moi n’aura plus jamais soif.
36 But I told you that although you have seen (me), you do not believe.	36 Mais vous avez vu et vous n’avez pas cru: cela, je vous l’ai déjà dit.
37 Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me,	37 “Tout ce que le Père me donne viendra à moi, et je ne rejetterai pas celui qui vient à moi.
38 because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.	38 Car je suis descendu du ciel, non pour faire ma volonté, mais pour faire la volonté de celui qui m’envoie.
39 And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it (on) the last day.	39 Voici ce que veut celui qui m’a envoyé: que je ne perde rien de ce qu’il m’a donné, mais que je le ressuscite au dernier jour.
40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him (on) the last day."	40 Oui, c’est la volonté de mon Père: quiconque voit le Fils et croit en lui doit vivre de vie éternelle, et moi je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.”
41 The Jews murmured about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven,"	41 Les Juifs commencèrent à protester parce que Jésus avait dit: "Je suis le pain qui est descendu du ciel.”
42 and they said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"	42 Ils disaient: "Nous connaissons son père et sa mère, n’est-ce pas? Il n’est que Jésus fils de Joseph. Et maintenant il vient nous dire qu’il est descendu du ciel!”
43 Jesus answered and said to them, "Stop murmuring among yourselves.	43 Jésus leur dit ceci: "Ne protestez pas entre vous.
44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day.	44 Personne ne peut venir à moi si le Père qui m’a envoyé ne l’attire; moi, alors, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.
45 It is written in the prophets: 'They shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me.	45 Il est écrit dans les livres des prophètes: Tous seront enseignés par Dieu. C’est ainsi que vient à moi celui qui a entendu et s’est laissé instruire par le Père.
46 Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.	46 Car personne, bien sûr, n’a vu le Père; un seul a vu le Père, celui qui vient d’auprès de Dieu.
47 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.	47 “En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis: celui qui croit vit de vie éternelle.”
48 I am the bread of life.	48 “Je suis le pain de vie.
49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;	49 Vos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert, mais ils sont morts.
50 this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die.	50 Voici maintenant le pain qui est descendu du ciel, celui qui en mange ne meurt pas.
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."	51 Je suis le pain vivant qui est descendu du ciel; si quelqu’un mange de ce pain, il vivra pour toujours. Et ce pain que je donnerai, c’est ma chair livrée pour la vie du monde.”
52 The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us (his) flesh to eat?"	52 Les Juifs commencèrent à se diviser. Ils disaient: "Cet homme va-t-il nous donner à manger de la chair?”
53 Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.	53 Jésus leur dit: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis: si vous ne mangez pas la chair du Fils de l’Homme et si vous ne buvez pas son sang, vous n’avez pas la vie en vous.
54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.	54 Celui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang vit de vie éternelle, et moi je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.
55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.	55 “Ma chair est vraiment nourriture, et mon sang est vraiment une boisson.
56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.	56 Celui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang demeure en moi et moi en lui.
57 Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.	57 De même que je vis par le Père, car le Père qui m’a envoyé est vivant, de la même façon celui qui me mange vivra par moi.
58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."	58 Voici le pain qui est descendu du ciel. Ce ne sera pas comme pour vos pères qui ont mangé, et ensuite ils sont morts: celui qui mange ce pain vivra pour toujours.”
59 These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.	59 Voilà ce que Jésus a dit dans la synagogue, quand il enseignait à Capharnaüm.
60 Then many of his disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?"	60 Après l’avoir entendu, bon nombre de ses disciples dirent: "Ce langage est dur à accepter, qui voudra l’écouter?”
61 Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you?	61 Jésus savait en lui-même que ses disciples protestaient; il leur dit: "Tout cela vous scandalise?
62 What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?	62 Que direz-vous lorsque vous verrez le Fils de l’Homme remonter où il était auparavant?
63 It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.	63 C’est l’Esprit qui fait vivre, la chair ne sert de rien; les paroles que je vous ai dites sont esprit, et elles sont vie.
64 But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him.	64 Mais certains d’entre vous ne croient pas.” Jésus savait en effet dès le début quels étaient ceux qui ne croyaient pas, et qui allait le trahir.
65 And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father."	65 Et il ajouta: "Voici la raison pour laquelle je vous ai dit que personne ne peut venir à moi si cela ne lui a pas été donné par le Père.”
66 As a result of this, many (of) his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.	66 Ce jour-là beaucoup de disciples firent marche arrière et cessèrent de le suivre.
67 Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?"	67 Jésus dit alors aux Douze: "N’allez-vous pas partir, vous aussi?”
68 Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.	68 Pierre lui répondit: "Seigneur, à qui irions-nous? Tu as les paroles de la vie éternelle,
69 We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."	69 et nous, nous croyons et nous savons que tu es le Saint de Dieu.”
70 Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you twelve? Yet is not one of you a devil?"	70 Jésus leur dit: "N’est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis, vous, les Douze? et pourtant l’un de vous est un démon.”
71 He was referring to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot; it was he who would betray him, one of the Twelve.	71 Jésus parlait de Judas, fils de Simon Iscariote. C’est lui, l’un des Douze, qui allait livrer Jésus.
