He departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples.1 And departing from there, he went away to his own country; and his disciples followed him.
When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, "Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!2 And when the Sabbath arrived, he began to teach in the synagogue. And many, upon hearing him, were amazed at his doctrine, saying: “Where did this one get all these things?” and, “What is this wisdom, which has been given to him?” and, “Such powerful deeds, which are wrought by his hands!”
Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.3 “Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? Are not his sisters also here with us?” And they took great offense at him.
Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house."4 And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house, and among his own kindred.”
So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them.5 And he was not able to perform any miracles there, except that he cured a few of the infirm by laying his hands on them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith. He went around to the villages in the vicinity teaching.6 And he wondered, because of their unbelief, and he traveled around in the villages, teaching.
He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits.7 And he called the twelve. And he began to send them out in twos, and he gave them authority over unclean spirits.
He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick--no food, no sack, no money in their belts.8 And he instructed them not to take anything for the journey, except a staff: no traveling bag, no bread, and no money belt,
They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic.9 but to wear sandals, and not to wear two tunics.
He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from there.10 And he said to them: “Whenever you have entered into a house, stay there until you depart from that place.
Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them."11 And whoever will neither receive you, nor listen to you, as you go away from there, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”
So they went off and preached repentance.12 And going out, they were preaching, so that people would repent.
They drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.13 And they cast out many demons, and they anointed many of the sick with oil and healed them.
King Herod heard about it, for his fame had become widespread, and people were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him."14 And king Herod heard of it, (for his name had become well-known) and he said: “John the Baptist has risen again from the dead, and because of this, miracles are at work in him.”
Others were saying, "He is Elijah"; still others, "He is a prophet like any of the prophets."15 But others were saying, “Because it is Elijah.” Still others were saying, “Because he is a prophet, like one of the prophets.”
But when Herod learned of it, he said, "It is John whom I beheaded. He has been raised up."16 When Herod had heard it, he said, “John whom I beheaded, the same has risen again from the dead.”
Herod was the one who had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married.17 For Herod himself had sent to capture John, and had chained him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip; for he had married her.
John had said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."18 For John was saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so.19 Now Herodias was devising treachery against him; and she wanted to kill him, but she was unable.
Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him.20 For Herod was apprehensive of John, knowing him to be a just and holy man, and so he guarded him. And he heard that he was accomplishing many things, and so he listened to him willingly.
She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee.21 And when an opportune time had arrived, Herod held a feast on his birthday, with the leaders, and the tribunes, and the first rulers of Galilee.
Herodias's own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you."22 And when the daughter of the same Herodias had entered, and danced, and pleased Herod, along with those who were at table with him, the king said to the girl, “Request from me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”
He even swore (many things) to her, "I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom."23 And he swore to her, “Anything that you request, I will give to you, even up to half my kingdom.”
She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" She replied, "The head of John the Baptist."24 And when she had gone out, she said to her mother, “What shall I request?” But her mother said, “The head of John the Baptist.”
The girl hurried back to the king's presence and made her request, "I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist."25 And immediately, when she had entered with haste to the king, she petitioned him, saying: “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her.26 And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who were sitting with him at table, he was not willing to disappoint her.
So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison.27 So, having sent an executioner, he instructed that his head be brought on a platter.
He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in turn gave it to her mother.28 And he beheaded him in prison, and he brought his head on a platter. And he gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it her mother.
When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.29 When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and they placed it in a tomb.
The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught.30 And the Apostles, returning to Jesus, reported to him everything that they had done and taught.
He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat.31 And he said to them, “Go out alone, into a deserted place, and rest for a little while.” For there were so many who were coming and going, that they did not even have time to eat.
So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.32 And climbing into a boat, they went away to a deserted place alone.
People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them.33 And they saw them going away, and many knew about it. And together they ran by foot from all the cities, and they arrived before them.
When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.34 And Jesus, going out, saw a great multitude. And he took pity on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.
By now it was already late and his disciples approached him and said, "This is a deserted place and it is already very late.35 And when many hours had now passed, his disciples drew near to him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late.
Dismiss them so that they can go to the surrounding farms and villages and buy themselves something to eat."36 Send them away, so that by going out to nearby villages and towns, they might buy provisions for themselves to eat.”
He said to them in reply, "Give them some food yourselves." But they said to him, "Are we to buy two hundred days' wages worth of food and give it to them to eat?"37 And responding, he said to them, “Give them something to eat yourselves.” And they said to him, “Let us go out and buy bread for two hundred denarii, and then we will give them something to eat.”
He asked them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." And when they had found out they said, "Five loaves and two fish."38 And he said to them: “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”
So he gave orders to have them sit down in groups on the green grass.39 And he instructed them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass.
The people took their places in rows by hundreds and by fifties.40 And they sat down in divisions by hundreds and by fifties.
Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to (his) disciples to set before the people; he also divided the two fish among them all.41 And having received the five loaves and the two fish, gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke the bread, and he gave it to his disciples to set before them. And the two fish he divided among them all.
They all ate and were satisfied.42 And they all ate and were satisfied.
And they picked up twelve wicker baskets full of fragments and what was left of the fish.43 And they brought together the remainder: twelve baskets full of fragments and of fish.
Those who ate (of the loaves) were five thousand men.44 Now those who ate were five thousand men.
Then he made his disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side toward Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.45 And without delay he urged his disciples to climb into the boat, so that they might precede him across the sea to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the people.
And when he had taken leave of them, he went off to the mountain to pray.46 And when he had dismissed them, he went to the mountain to pray.
When it was evening, the boat was far out on the sea and he was alone on shore.47 And when it was late, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he was alone on the land.
Then he saw that they were tossed about while rowing, for the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them.48 And seeing them struggling to row, (for the wind was against them,) and about the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea. And he intended to pass by them.
But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out.49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they thought it was an apparition, and they cried out.
They had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke with them, "Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!"50 For they all saw him, and they were very disturbed. And immediately he spoke with them, and he said to them: “Be strengthened in faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”
He got into the boat with them and the wind died down. They were (completely) astounded.51 And he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they became even more astonished within themselves.
They had not understood the incident of the loaves. On the contrary, their hearts were hardened.52 For they did not understand about the bread. For their heart had been blinded.
After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and tied up there.53 And when they had crossed over, they arrived in the land of Genesaret, and they reached the shore.
As they were leaving the boat, people immediately recognized him.54 And when they had disembarked from the boat, the people immediately recognized him.
They scurried about the surrounding country and began to bring in the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.55 And running throughout that entire region, they began to carry on beds those who had maladies, to where they heard that he would be.
Whatever villages or towns or countryside he entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak; and as many as touched it were healed.56 And in whichever place he entered, in towns or villages or cities, they placed the infirm in the main streets, and they pleaded with him that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched him were made healthy.
