NEW AMERICAN BIBLEBIBLIA
He departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples.1 Salió de allí y vino a su patria, y sus discípulos le siguen.
When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, "Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!2 Cuando llegó el sábado se puso a enseñar en la sinagoga. La multitud, al oírle, quedaba maravillada, y decía: «¿De dónde le viene esto? y ¿qué sabiduría es ésta que le ha sido dada? ¿Y esos milagros hechos por sus manos?
Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.3 ¿No es éste el carpintero, el hijo de María y hermano de Santiago, Joset, Judas y Simón? ¿Y no están sus hermanas aquí entre nosotros?» Y se escandalizaban a causa de él.
Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house."4 Jesús les dijo: «Un profeta sólo en su patria, entre sus parientes y en su casa carece de prestigio».
So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them.5 Y no podía hacer allí ningún milagro, a excepción de unos pocos enfermos a quienes curó imponiéndoles las manos.
He was amazed at their lack of faith. He went around to the villages in the vicinity teaching.6 Y se maravilló de su falta de fe. Y recorría los pueblos del contorno enseñando.
He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits.7 Y llama a los Doce y comenzó a enviarlos de dos en dos, dándoles poder sobre los espíritus inmundos.
He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick--no food, no sack, no money in their belts.8 Les ordenó que nada tomasen para el camino, fuera de un bastón: ni pan, ni alforja, ni calderilla en la faja;
They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic.9 sino: «Calzados con sandalias y no vistáis dos túnicas».
He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from there.10 Y les dijo: «Cuando entréis en una casa, quedaos en ella hasta marchar de allí.
Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them."11 Si algún lugar no os recibe y no os escuchan, marchaos de allí sacudiendo el polvo de la planta de vuestros pies, en testimonio contra ellos».
So they went off and preached repentance.12 Y, yéndose de allí, predicaron que se convirtieran;
They drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.13 expulsaban a muchos demonios, y ungían con aceite a muchos enfermos y los curaban.
King Herod heard about it, for his fame had become widespread, and people were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him."14 Se enteró el rey Herodes, pues su nombre se había hecho célebre.
Others were saying, "He is Elijah"; still others, "He is a prophet like any of the prophets."15 Otros decían: «Es Elías»; otros: «Es un profeta como los demás profetas».
But when Herod learned of it, he said, "It is John whom I beheaded. He has been raised up."16 Al enterarse Herodes, dijo: «Aquel Juan, a quien yo decapité, ése ha resucitado».
Herod was the one who had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married.17 Es que Herodes era el que había enviado a prender a Juan y le había encadenado en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano Filipo, con quien Herodes se había casado.
John had said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."18 Porque Juan decía a Herodes: «No te está permitido tener la mujer de tu hermano».
Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so.19 Herodías le aborrecía y quería matarle, pero no podía,
Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him.20 pues Herodes temía a Juan, sabiendo que era hombre justo y santo, y le protegía; y al oírle, quedaba muy perplejo, y le escuchaba con gusto.
She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee.21 Y llegó el día oportuno, cuando Herodes, en su cumpleaños, dio un banquete a sus magnates, a los tribunos y a los principales de Galilea.
Herodias's own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you."22 Entró la hija de la misma Herodías, danzó, y gustó mucho a Herodes y a los comensales.
He even swore (many things) to her, "I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom."23 Y le juró: «Te daré lo que me pidas, hasta la mitad de mi reino».
She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" She replied, "The head of John the Baptist."24 Salió la muchacha y preguntó a su madre: «¿Qué voy a pedir?»
The girl hurried back to the king's presence and made her request, "I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist."25 Entrando al punto apresuradamente adonde estaba el rey, le pidió: «Quiero que ahora mismo me des, en una bandeja, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista».
The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her.26 El rey se llenó de tristeza, pero no quiso desairarla a causa del juramento y de los comensales.
So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head.
He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in turn gave it to her mother.28 y trajo su cabeza en una bandeja, y se la dio a la muchacha, y la muchacha se la dio a su madre.
When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.29 Al enterarse sus discípulos, vinieron a recoger el cadáver y le dieron sepultura.
The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught.30 Los apóstoles se reunieron con Jesús y le contaron todo lo que habían hecho y lo que habían enseñado.
He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat.31 El, entonces, les dice: «Venid también vosotros aparte, a un lugar solitario, para descansar un poco».
So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.32 Y se fueron en la barca, aparte, a un lugar solitario.
People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them.33 Pero les vieron marcharse y muchos cayeron en cuenta; y fueron allá corriendo, a pie, de todas las ciudades y llegaron antes que ellos.
When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.34 Y al desembarcar, vio mucha gente, sintió compasión de ellos, pues estaban como ovejas que no tienen pastor, y se puso a enseñarles muchas cosas.
By now it was already late and his disciples approached him and said, "This is a deserted place and it is already very late.35 Era ya una hora muy avanzada cuando se le acercaron sus discípulos y le dijeron: «El lugar está deshabitado y ya es hora avanzada.
Dismiss them so that they can go to the surrounding farms and villages and buy themselves something to eat."36 Despídelos para que vayan a las aldeas y pueblos del contorno a comprarse de comer».
He said to them in reply, "Give them some food yourselves." But they said to him, "Are we to buy two hundred days' wages worth of food and give it to them to eat?"37 El les contestó: «Dadles vosotros de comer».
He asked them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." And when they had found out they said, "Five loaves and two fish."38 El les dice: «¿Cuántos panes tenéis? Id a ver».
So he gave orders to have them sit down in groups on the green grass.39 Entonces les mandó que se acomodaran todos por grupos sobre la verde hierba.
The people took their places in rows by hundreds and by fifties.40 Y se acomodaron por grupos de cien y de cincuenta.
Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to (his) disciples to set before the people; he also divided the two fish among them all.41 Y tomando los cinco panes y los dos peces, y levantando los ojos al cielo, pronunció la bendición, partió los panes y los iba dando a los discípulos para que se los fueran sirviendo. También repartió entre todos los dos peces.
They all ate and were satisfied.42 Comieron todos y se saciaron.
And they picked up twelve wicker baskets full of fragments and what was left of the fish.43 Y recogieron las sobras, doce canastos llenos y también lo de los peces.
Those who ate (of the loaves) were five thousand men.44 Los que comieron los panes fueron 5.000 hombres.
Then he made his disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side toward Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.45 Inmediatamente obligó a sus discípulos a subir a la barca y a ir por delante hacia Betsaida, mientras él despedía a la gente.
And when he had taken leave of them, he went off to the mountain to pray.46 Después de despedirse de ellos, se fue al monte a orar.
When it was evening, the boat was far out on the sea and he was alone on shore.47 Al atardecer, estaba la barca en medio del mar y él, solo, en tierra.
Then he saw that they were tossed about while rowing, for the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them.48 Viendo que ellos se fatigaban remando, pues el viento les era contrario, a eso de la cuarta vigilia de la noche viene hacia ellos caminando sobre el mar y quería pasarles de largo.
But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out.49 Pero ellos viéndole caminar sobre el mar, creyeron que era un fantasma y se pusieron a gritar,
They had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke with them, "Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!"50 pues todos le habían visto y estaban turbados.
He got into the boat with them and the wind died down. They were (completely) astounded.51 Subió entonces donde ellos a la barca, y amainó el viento, y quedaron en su interior completamente estupefactos,
They had not understood the incident of the loaves. On the contrary, their hearts were hardened.52 pues no habían entendido lo de los panes, sino que su mente estaba embotada.
After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and tied up there.53 Terminada la travesía, llegaron a tierra en Genesaret y atracaron.
As they were leaving the boat, people immediately recognized him.54 Apenas desembarcaron, le reconocieron en seguida,
They scurried about the surrounding country and began to bring in the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.55 recorrieron toda aquella región y comenzaron a traer a los enfermos en camillas adonde oían que él estaba.
Whatever villages or towns or countryside he entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak; and as many as touched it were healed.56 Y dondequiera que entraba, en pueblos, ciudades o aldeas, colocaban a los enfermos en las plazas y le pedían que tocaran siquiera la orla de su manto; y cuantos la tocaron quedaban salvados.
