As soon as morning came, the chief priests with the elders and the scribes, that is, the whole Sanhedrin, held a council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.1 Sogleich am frühen Morgen faßten die Hohenpriester mit den Ältesten und Schriftgelehrten und der ganze Hohe Rat den Beschluß, ließen Jesus fesseln und abführen und übergaben ihn an Pilatus.
Pilate questioned him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say so."2 Pilatus fragte ihn: "Bist du der König der Juden?" Er antwortete ihm: "Du sagst es!"
The chief priests accused him of many things.3 Die Hohenpriester erhoben schwere Anklagen gegen ihn.
Again Pilate questioned him, "Have you no answer? See how many things they accuse you of."4 Da fragte ihn Pilatus wiederum: "Antwortest du nichts? Siehe, was sie alles gegen dich vorbringen!"
Jesus gave him no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.5 Jesus aber antwortete nichts mehr, so daß Pilatus sich sehr verwunderte.
Now on the occasion of the feast he used to release to them one prisoner whom they requested.6 Zum Festtag aber pflegte er ihnen einen Gefangenen freizugeben, einen, um den sie baten.
A man called Barabbas was then in prison along with the rebels who had committed murder in a rebellion.7 Nun befand sich ein gewisser Barabbas in Haft, zusammen mit den Aufrührern, die beim Aufstand einen Mord verübt hatten.
The crowd came forward and began to ask him to do for them as he was accustomed.8 Da zog das Volk hinauf und begann die Bitte zu stellen, wie er sie ihnen zu erfüllen pflegte.
Pilate answered, "Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?"9 Pilatus wandte sich an sie und sprach: "Wollt ihr, daß ich euch den König der Juden freigebe?"
For he knew that it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed him over.10 Denn er merkte, daß die Hohenpriester ihn aus Mißgunst überliefert hatten.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead.11 Die Hohenpriester aber wiegelten das Volk auf, er solle ihnen lieber den Barrabas freigeben.
Pilate again said to them in reply, "Then what (do you want) me to do with (the man you call) the king of the Jews?"12 Da wandte sich Pilatus abermals an sie: "Was soll ich dann mit dem machen, den ihr den König der Juden nennt?"
They shouted again, "Crucify him."13 Sie schrien zurück: "Kreuzige ihn!"
Pilate said to them, "Why? What evil has he done?" They only shouted the louder, "Crucify him."14 Pilatus entgegnete ihnen: "Was hat er denn Böses getan?" Sie aber schrien noch mehr: "Kreuzige ihn!"
So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them and, after he had Jesus scourged, handed him over to be crucified.15 Da ließ Pilatus, um dem Volke Genüge zu tun, ihnen Barabbas frei, Jesus aber ließ er geißeln und übergab ihn zur Kreuzigung.
The soldiers led him away inside the palace, that is, the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort.16 Die Soldaten führten ihn ab in das Innere des Gebäudes, in das Prätorium hinein, riefen die ganze Kohorte zusammen,
They clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him.17 legten ihm einen Purpurmantel um, flochten einen Kranz von Dornen und setzten ihm diesen auf.
They began to salute him with, "Hail, King of the Jews!"18 Dann begannen sie, ihn zu begrüßen: "Heil dir, König der Juden!"
and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him. They knelt before him in homage.19 Sie schlugen ihn mit einem Rohr aufs Haupt und spien ihn an, beugten die Knie und huldigten ihm.
And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him.20 Nachdem sie ihn verspottet hatten, nahmen sie ihm den Purpurmantel ab, zogen ihm seine Kleider an und führten ihn hinaus, um ihn zu kreuzigen.
They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.21 Und sie zwangen einen Vorbeigehenden, Simon von Cyrene, den Vater des Alexander und des Rufus, der vom Felde kam, sein Kreuz zu tragen.
They brought him to the place of Golgotha (which is translated Place of the Skull).22 Sie führten ihn an den Ort Golgotha, was übersetzt Schädelstätte bedeutet,
They gave him wine drugged with myrrh, but he did not take it.23 und reichten ihm Wein, der mit Myrrhe bereitet war; er aber nahm ihn nicht.
Then they crucified him and divided his garments by casting lots for them to see what each should take.24 Sie kreuzigten ihn und verteilten seine Kleider, indem sie das Los darüber warfen, was ein jeder erhalten solle.
It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him.25 Es war die dritte Stunde, da sie ihn kreuzigten.
The inscription of the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews."26 Zur Angabe seiner Schuld war hinaufgeschrieben: "Der König der Juden!"
With him they crucified two revolutionaries, one on his right and one on his left.27 Und zusammen mit ihm kreuzigten sie zwei Rebellen, einen zu seiner Rechten und einen zu seiner Linken.
) 28 [Da wurde das Schriftwort erfüllt: "Er wurde unter die Verbrecher gerechnet" (Is 53,12).]
Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,29 Die Vorübergehenden aber lästerten ihn, schüttelten den Kopf und sagten: "Ha, du brichst den Tempel ab und baust ihn auf in drei Tagen,
save yourself by coming down from the cross."30 hilf dir selbst und steig herab vom Kreuze!"
Likewise the chief priests, with the scribes, mocked him among themselves and said, "He saved others; he cannot save himself.31 Gleicherweise verspotteten ihn auch die Hohenpriester mitsamt den Schriftgelehrten, indem sie zueinander sagten: "Anderen hat er geholfen, sich selbst kann er nicht helfen.
Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with him also kept abusing him.32 Der Messias, der König von Israel, er steige nun herab vom Kreuze, damit wir sehen und glauben." Auch die mit ihm Gekreuzigten schmähten ihn.
At noon darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.33 Als die sechste Stunde kam, trat Finsternis ein über das ganze Land bis zur neunten Stunde.
And at three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"34 Und um die neunte Stunde rief Jesus mit lauter Stimme: "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani", das heißt übersetzt: "Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen?" (Ps 22,2).
Some of the bystanders who heard it said, "Look, he is calling Elijah."35 Einige von den Umstehenden, die dies hörten, sagten: "Seht, er ruft den Elias!"
One of them ran, soaked a sponge with wine, put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to take him down."36 Einer aber lief hin, füllte einen Schwamm mit Essig, steckte ihn an ein Rohr und gab ihm zu trinken, indem er sagte: "Laßt, wir wollen sehen, ob Elias kommt, ihn herabzuholen!"
Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.37 Jesus aber stieß einen lauten Schrei aus und verschied.
The veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.38 Da riß der Vorhang des Tempels von oben bis unten entzwei.
When the centurion who stood facing him saw how he breathed his last he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"39 Als aber der Hauptmann, der ihm gegenüber dabeistand, ihn so verscheiden sah, sprach er: "Wahrhaftig, dieser Mensch war Gottes Sohn!"
There were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joses, and Salome.40 Auch Frauen schauten von weitem zu, unter ihnen auch Maria Magdalena und Maria, die Mutter des Jakobus des Jüngeren und des Joses, und Salome,
These women had followed him when he was in Galilee and ministered to him. There were also many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.41 die schon, als er in Galiläa war, bei ihm waren und ihm dienten, so wie andere, die mit ihm hinaufgezogen waren nach Jerusalem.
When it was already evening, since it was the day of preparation, the day before the sabbath,42 Da es schon Abend wurde - es war ja Rüsttag, das ist Vorsabbat -,
Joseph of Arimathea, a distinguished member of the council, who was himself awaiting the kingdom of God, came and courageously went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.43 kam Joseph von Arimathäa, ein angesehener Ratsherr, der auch selbst auf das Gottesreich wartete, ging mutig entschlossen zu Pilatus und bat um den Leichnam Jesu.
Pilate was amazed that he was already dead. He summoned the centurion and asked him if Jesus had already died.44 Pilatus wunderte sich, daß er schon tot sei, ließ den Hauptmann kommen und fragte ihn, ob er schon gestorben sei.
And when he learned of it from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.45 Und als er es vom Hauptmann erfahren hatte, schenkte er Joseph den Leichnam.
Having bought a linen cloth, he took him down, wrapped him in the linen cloth and laid him in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.46 Dieser kaufte Leinwand, nahm ihn ab, wickelte ihn in Leinwand und legte ihn in ein Grab, das in einen Felsen gehauen war, und wälzte einen Stein vor den Eingang des Grabes.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses watched where he was laid.47 Maria Magdalena und Maria, die Mutter des Joses, sahen zu, wo er beigesetzt wurde.
