NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
As soon as morning came, the chief priests with the elders and the scribes, that is, the whole Sanhedrin, held a council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.1 First thing in the morning, the chief priests, together with the elders and scribes and the rest of theSanhedrin, had their plan ready. They had Jesus bound and took him away and handed him over to Pilate.
Pilate questioned him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say so."2 Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'
The chief priests accused him of many things.3 And the chief priests brought many accusations against him.
Again Pilate questioned him, "Have you no answer? See how many things they accuse you of."4 Pilate questioned him again, 'Have you no reply at al ? See how many accusations they are bringingagainst you!'
Jesus gave him no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.5 But, to Pilate's surprise, Jesus made no further reply.
Now on the occasion of the feast he used to release to them one prisoner whom they requested.6 At festival time Pilate used to release a prisoner for them, any one they asked for.
A man called Barabbas was then in prison along with the rebels who had committed murder in a rebellion.7 Now a man called Barabbas was then in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during theuprising.
The crowd came forward and began to ask him to do for them as he was accustomed.8 When the crowd went up and began to ask Pilate the customary favour,
Pilate answered, "Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?"9 Pilate answered them, 'Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?'
For he knew that it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed him over.10 For he realised it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead.11 The chief priests, however, had incited the crowd to demand that he should release Barabbas forthem instead.
Pilate again said to them in reply, "Then what (do you want) me to do with (the man you call) the king of the Jews?"12 Then Pilate spoke again, 'But in that case, what am I to do with the man you call king of the Jews?'
They shouted again, "Crucify him."13 They shouted back, 'Crucify him!'
Pilate said to them, "Why? What evil has he done?" They only shouted the louder, "Crucify him."14 Pilate asked them, 'What harm has he done?' But they shouted al the louder, 'Crucify him!'
So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them and, after he had Jesus scourged, handed him over to be crucified.15 So Pilate, anxious to placate the crowd, released Barabbas for them and, after having Jesusscourged, he handed him over to be crucified.
The soldiers led him away inside the palace, that is, the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort.16 The soldiers led him away to the inner part of the palace, that is, the Praetorium, and cal ed thewhole cohort together.
They clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him.17 They dressed him up in purple, twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on him.
They began to salute him with, "Hail, King of the Jews!"18 And they began saluting him, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'
and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him. They knelt before him in homage.19 They struck his head with a reed and spat on him; and they went down on their knees to do himhomage.
And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him.20 And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the purple and dressed him in his ownclothes. They led him out to crucify him.
They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.21 They enlisted a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in fromthe country, to carry his cross.
They brought him to the place of Golgotha (which is translated Place of the Skull).22 They brought Jesus to the place cal ed Golgotha, which means the place of the skul .
They gave him wine drugged with myrrh, but he did not take it.23 They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he refused it.
Then they crucified him and divided his garments by casting lots for them to see what each should take.24 Then they crucified him, and shared out his clothing, casting lots to decide what each should get.
It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him.25 It was the third hour when they crucified him.
The inscription of the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews."26 The inscription giving the charge against him read, 'The King of the Jews'.
With him they crucified two revolutionaries, one on his right and one on his left.27 And they crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and one on his left.

Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,29 The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads and said, 'Aha! So you would destroy theTemple and rebuild it in three days!
save yourself by coming down from the cross."30 Then save yourself; come down from the cross!'
Likewise the chief priests, with the scribes, mocked him among themselves and said, "He saved others; he cannot save himself.31 The chief priests and the scribes mocked him among themselves in the same way with the words,'He saved others, he cannot save himself.
Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with him also kept abusing him.32 Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, for us to see it and believe.' Eventhose who were crucified with him taunted him.
At noon darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.33 When the sixth hour came there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
And at three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani?' which means, 'MyGod, my God, why have you forsaken me?'
Some of the bystanders who heard it said, "Look, he is calling Elijah."35 When some of those who stood by heard this, they said, 'Listen, he is cal ing on Elijah.'
One of them ran, soaked a sponge with wine, put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to take him down."36 Someone ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink saying,'Wait! And see if Elijah wil come to take him down.'
Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.37 But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
The veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.38 And the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.
When the centurion who stood facing him saw how he breathed his last he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"39 The centurion, who was standing in front of him, had seen how he had died, and he said, 'In truth thisman was Son of God.'
There were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joses, and Salome.40 There were some women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary whowas the mother of James the younger and Joset, and Salome.
These women had followed him when he was in Galilee and ministered to him. There were also many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.41 These used to follow him and look after him when he was in Galilee. And many other women werethere who had come up to Jerusalem with him.
When it was already evening, since it was the day of preparation, the day before the sabbath,42 It was now evening, and since it was Preparation Day -- that is, the day before the Sabbath-
Joseph of Arimathea, a distinguished member of the council, who was himself awaiting the kingdom of God, came and courageously went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.43 there came Joseph of Arimathaea, a prominent member of the Council, who himself lived in the hopeof seeing the kingdom of God, and he boldly went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Pilate was amazed that he was already dead. He summoned the centurion and asked him if Jesus had already died.44 Pilate, astonished that he should have died so soon, summoned the centurion and enquired if he hadbeen dead for some time.
And when he learned of it from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.45 Having been assured of this by the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph
Having bought a linen cloth, he took him down, wrapped him in the linen cloth and laid him in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.46 who bought a shroud, took Jesus down from the cross, wrapped him in the shroud and laid him in atomb which had been hewn out of the rock. He then rol ed a stone against the entrance to the tomb.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses watched where he was laid.47 Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of Joset took note of where he was laid.
