The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ (the Son of God).1 The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way.2 It is written in the prophet Isaiah: Look, I am going to send my messenger in front of you to prepare yourway before you.
A voice of one crying out in the desert: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.'"3 A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.
John (the) Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.4 John the Baptist was in the desert, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.5 All Judaea and all the people of Jerusalem made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him inthe river Jordan they confessed their sins.
John was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey.6 John wore a garment of camel-skin, and he lived on locusts and wild honey.
And this is what he proclaimed: "One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.7 In the course of his preaching he said, 'After me is coming someone who is more powerful than me, andI am not fit to kneel down and undo the strap of his sandals.
I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the holy Spirit."8 I have baptised you with water, but he wil baptise you with the Holy Spirit.'
It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.9 It was at this time that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised in the Jordan by John.
On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.10 And at once, as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit, likea dove, descending on him.
And a voice came from the heavens, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."11 And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.'
At once the Spirit drove him out into the desert,12 And at once the Spirit drove him into the desert
and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.13 and he remained there for forty days, and was put to the test by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels looked after him.
After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God:14 After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the gospel from Godsaying,
"This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."15 'The time is fulfil ed, and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the gospel.'
As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen.16 As he was walking along by the Lake of Galilee he saw Simon and Simon's brother Andrew casting anet in the lake -- for they were fishermen.
Jesus said to them, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men."17 And Jesus said to them, 'Come after me and I will make you into fishers of people.'
Then they abandoned their nets and followed him.18 And at once they left their nets and fol owed him.
He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets.19 Going on a little further, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they too were in theirboat, mending the nets.
Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.20 At once he called them and, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the men he employed, theywent after him.
Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.21 They went as far as Capernaum, and at once on the Sabbath he went into the synagogue and beganto teach.
The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.22 And his teaching made a deep impression on them because, unlike the scribes, he taught them withauthority.
In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit;23 And at once in their synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit, and he shouted,
he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"24 'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are:the Holy One of God.'
Jesus rebuked him and said, "Quiet! Come out of him!"25 But Jesus rebuked it saying, 'Be quiet! Come out of him!'
The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.26 And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him.
All were amazed and asked one another, "What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him."27 The people were so astonished that they started asking one another what it al meant, saying, 'Here isa teaching that is new, and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.'
His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.28 And his reputation at once spread everywhere, through all the surrounding Galilean countryside.
On leaving the synagogue he entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John.29 And at once on leaving the synagogue, he went with James and John straight to the house of Simonand Andrew.
Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her.30 Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed and feverish, and at once they told him about her.
He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them.31 He went in to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began toserve them.
When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons.32 That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed bydevils.
The whole town was gathered at the door.33 The whole town came crowding round the door,
He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him.34 and he cured many who were sick with diseases of one kind or another; he also drove out manydevils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was.
Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.35 In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house and went off to a lonely place andprayed there.
Simon and those who were with him pursued him36 Simon and his companions set out in search of him,
and on finding him said, "Everyone is looking for you."37 and when they found him they said, 'Everybody is looking for you.'
He told them, "Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come."38 He answered, 'Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can proclaim themessage there too, because that is why I came.'
So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.39 And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out devils.
A leper came to him (and kneeling down) begged him and said, "If you wish, you can make me clean."40 A man suffering from a virulent skin-disease came to him and pleaded on his knees saying, 'If you arewil ing, you can cleanse me.'
Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, "I do will it. Be made clean."41 Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said to him, 'I am willing. Becleansed.'
The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.42 And at once the skin-disease left him and he was cleansed.
Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once.43 And at once Jesus sternly sent him away and said to him,
Then he said to him, "See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them."44 'Mind you tel no one anything, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for yourcleansing prescribed by Moses as evidence to them.'
The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.45 The man went away, but then started freely proclaiming and tel ing the story everywhere, so thatJesus could no longer go openly into any town, but stayed outside in deserted places. Even so, people from alaround kept coming to him.
