Sirach 7

1 Do no evil, and evil will not overtake you;	1 Male non fare e male non t'incoglierà;
2 avoid wickedness, and it will turn aside from you.	2 sta lontano dall'iniquo, e i mali s'allontaneranno da te.
3 Sow not in the furrows of injustice, lest you harvest it sevenfold.	3 Figliuolo, non seminare il male ne' solchi dell'ingiustizia, e non avrai da mieterne il settuplo.
4 Seek not from the LORD authority, nor from the king a place of honor.	4 Non cercar dal Signore un principato, nè dal re un seggio d'onore.
5 Parade not your justice before the Lord, and before the king flaunt not your wisdom.	5 Non vantar la tua giustizia dinanzi al Signore, perch'egli conosce il cuore, e non fare il sapiente davanti al re.
6 Seek not to become a judge if you have not strength to root out crime, Or you will show favor to the ruler and mar your integrity.	6 Non cercar di diventare giudice, se non hai forza di sradicar le ingiustizie; perchè tu non abbia a temere in faccia al potente, e mettere inciampi alla tua equità.
7 Be guilty of no evil before the city's populace, nor disgrace yourself before the assembly.	7 Non peccar contro la cittadinanza, e non ti gettar sul popolo.
8 Do not plot to repeat a sin; not even for one will you go unpunished.	8 Non legare insieme due peccati; perchè neppur per un solo non resterai impunito.
9 Say not: "He will appreciate my many gifts; the Most High will accept my offerings."	9 Non esser pusillanime in cuor tuo,
10 Be not impatient in prayers, and neglect not the giving of alms.	10 e non trascurar di pregare e far limosina.
11 Laugh not at an embittered man; be mindful of him who exalts and humbles.	11 Non dire: «Iddio guarderà alla moltitudine delle mie offerte, e quand'io offro i miei doni al Dio altissimo, gli accoglierà».
12 Plot no mischief against your brother, nor against your friend and companion.	12 Non deridere l'uomo nell'amarezza dell'anima [sua], perchè c'è chi umilia ed esalta, Dio che tutto vede.
13 Delight not in telling lie after lie, for it never results in good.	13 Non coltivar menzogne contro il tuo fratello, nè fare altrettanto verso un amico.
14 Thrust not yourself into the deliberations of princes, and repeat not the words of your prayer.	14 Non voler mai dire nessuna bugia: perchè l'abitudine del mentire non porta bene,
15 Hate not laborious tasks, nor farming, which was ordained by the Most High.	15 Non esser ciarliero nella compagnia de' vecchi, e non ripeter le parole nelle tue preghiere.
16 Do not esteem yourself better than your fellows; remember, his wrath will not delay.	16 Non odiare il lavoro faticoso, nè l'agricoltura creata dall'Altissimo.
17 More and more, humble your pride; what awaits man is worms.	17 Non ti metter nel branco de' peccatori;
18 Barter not a friend for money, nor a dear brother for the gold of Ophir.	18 ricordati che l'ira [divina] non tarderà.
19 Dismiss not a sensible wife; a gracious wife is more precious than corals.	19 Umilia profondamente l'anima tua, perchè castigo della carne dell'empio [sarà] il fuoco e il verme.
20 Mistreat not a servant who faithfully serves, nor a laborer who devotes himself to his task.	20 Non peccar contro l'amico che tarda [a darti] il danaro, nè disprezzar per l'oro un fratello carissimo.
21 Let a wise servant be dear to you as your own self; refuse him not his freedom.	21 Non ti separar da una donna savia e buona, che nel timor del Signore t'è toccata in sorte; perchè la pudica sua grazia [vai] più dell'oro.
22 If you have livestock, look after them; if they are dependable, keep them.	22 Non maltrattare lo schiavo che con fedeltà lavora, nè il mercenario che ci mette l'anima sua.
23 If you have sons, chastise them; bend their necks from childhood.	23 Il servo assennato ti sia caro come l'anima tua; non lo fraudar della sua libertà, nè lo lasciar nell'indigenza.
24 If you have daughters, keep them chaste, and be not indulgent to them.	24 Hai bestiami? prendine cura, e se ti son utili, restin presso di te.
25 Giving your daughter in marriage ends a great task; but give her to a worthy man.	25 Hai figliuoli? istruiscili, e piegali [al giogo] sin dalla loro infanzia.
26 If you have a wife, let her not seem odious to you; but where there is ill-feeling, trust her not.	26 Hai figliuole? custodisci il loro corpo, e non mostrare ad esse [troppo] ridente il tuo volto.
27 With your whole heart honor your father; your mother's birthpangs forget not.	27 Marita la figliuola, e avrai fatto un grosso affare, ma dalla a un uomo sensato.
28 Remember, of these parents you were born; what can you give them for all they gave you?	28 Hai una donna secondo il tuo cuore, non la mandar via; ma non ti affidare a una che ti sia odiosa.
29 With all your soul, fear God, revere his priests.	29 Con tutto il tuo cuore onora tuo padre, e non dimenticar le doglie di tua madre.
30 With all your strength, love your Creator, forsake not his ministers.	30 Ricordati che senza di essi non saresti nato, e rendi loro a seconda di quanto t'han dato.
31 Honor God and respect the priest; give him his portion as you have been commanded: First fruits and contributions, due sacrifices and holy offerings.	31 Con tutta l'anima tua temi il Signore, e venera i suoi sacerdoti.
32 To the poor man also extend your hand, that your blessing may be complete;	32 Con tutte le tue forze ama il tuo crcntore, e non abbandonare i suoi ministri.
33 Be generous to all the living, and withhold not your kindness from the dead.	33 Venera Iddio con tutta l'anima tua e rispetta i sacerdoti, e purificati con le spalle [delle vittime].
34 Avoid not those who weep, but mourn with those who mourn;	34 E dà ad essi la parte [loro], come t'è stato comandato, le primizie e [la vittima] d'espiazione, e della tua negligenza mondati con poco;
35 Neglect not to visit the sick-- for these things you will be loved.	35 l'offerta delle tue spalle, e il sacrifizio di santificazione offrirai al Signore, e le primizie dovute ai santi.
36 In whatever you do, remember your last days, and you will never sin.	36 Anche al povero stendi la tua mano, perchè sia completa la tua espiazione e la tua benedizione.
	37 Gradito è il dono a tutti i viventi; e [neppure] al morto non negar la [tua] grazia.
	38 Non mancar di porger conforto a quei chè piangono, e va' con gli afflitti.
	39 Non ti sia grave visitare il malato, perchè con tali cose t'assicurerai l'amore. In tutte le opere tue ricordati della tua fine, e non peccherai in eterno.
