Sirach 7

1 Do no evil, and evil will not overtake you;	1 Non fare il male, perché il male non ti prenda.
2 avoid wickedness, and it will turn aside from you.	2 Stai lontano dall’iniquità ed essa si allontanerà da te.
3 Sow not in the furrows of injustice, lest you harvest it sevenfold.	3 Figlio, non seminare nei solchi dell’ingiustizia per non raccoglierne sette volte tanto.
4 Seek not from the LORD authority, nor from the king a place of honor.	4 Non domandare al Signore il potere né al re un posto di onore.
5 Parade not your justice before the Lord, and before the king flaunt not your wisdom.	5 Non farti giusto davanti al Signore né saggio davanti al re.
6 Seek not to become a judge if you have not strength to root out crime, Or you will show favor to the ruler and mar your integrity.	6 Non cercare di divenire giudice se ti manca la forza di estirpare l’ingiustizia, perché temeresti di fronte al potente e getteresti una macchia sulla tua retta condotta.
7 Be guilty of no evil before the city's populace, nor disgrace yourself before the assembly.	7 Non fare soprusi contro l’assemblea della città e non degradarti in mezzo al popolo.
8 Do not plot to repeat a sin; not even for one will you go unpunished.	8 Non ti impigliare due volte nel peccato, perché neppure di uno resterai impunito.
9 Say not: "He will appreciate my many gifts; the Most High will accept my offerings."	9 Non dire: «Egli guarderà all’abbondanza dei miei doni, e quando farò l’offerta al Dio altissimo, egli l’accetterà».
10 Be not impatient in prayers, and neglect not the giving of alms.	10 Non essere incostante nella tua preghiera e non trascurare di fare elemosina.
11 Laugh not at an embittered man; be mindful of him who exalts and humbles.	11 Non deridere un uomo dall’animo amareggiato, perché c’è chi umilia e innalza.
12 Plot no mischief against your brother, nor against your friend and companion.	12 Non seminare menzogne contro tuo fratello e non fare qualcosa di simile all’amico.
13 Delight not in telling lie after lie, for it never results in good.	13 Non ricorrere mai alla menzogna: è un’abitudine che non porta alcun bene.
14 Thrust not yourself into the deliberations of princes, and repeat not the words of your prayer.	14 Non parlare troppo nell’assemblea degli anziani e non ripetere le parole della tua preghiera.
15 Hate not laborious tasks, nor farming, which was ordained by the Most High.	15 Non disprezzare il lavoro faticoso, in particolare l’agricoltura che Dio ha istituito.
16 Do not esteem yourself better than your fellows; remember, his wrath will not delay.	16 Non unirti alla moltitudine dei peccatori, ricòrdati che la collera divina non tarderà.
17 More and more, humble your pride; what awaits man is worms.	17 Umìliati profondamente, perché castigo dell’empio sono fuoco e vermi.
18 Barter not a friend for money, nor a dear brother for the gold of Ophir.	18 Non cambiare un amico per interesse né un vero fratello per l’oro di Ofir.
19 Dismiss not a sensible wife; a gracious wife is more precious than corals.	19 Non disdegnare una sposa saggia e buona, poiché la sua amabilità vale più dell’oro.
20 Mistreat not a servant who faithfully serves, nor a laborer who devotes himself to his task.	20 Non maltrattare un servo che lavora fedelmente né l’operaio che si impegna totalmente.
21 Let a wise servant be dear to you as your own self; refuse him not his freedom.	21 Ama il servo intelligente e non rifiutargli la libertà.
22 If you have livestock, look after them; if they are dependable, keep them.	22 Hai bestiame? Abbine cura; se ti è utile, resti in tuo possesso.
23 If you have sons, chastise them; bend their necks from childhood.	23 Hai figli? Educali e fa’ loro piegare il collo fin dalla giovinezza.
24 If you have daughters, keep them chaste, and be not indulgent to them.	24 Hai figlie? Vigila sul loro corpo e non mostrare loro un volto troppo indulgente.
25 Giving your daughter in marriage ends a great task; but give her to a worthy man.	25 Fa’ sposare tua figlia e avrai compiuto un grande affare, ma dàlla a un uomo assennato.
26 If you have a wife, let her not seem odious to you; but where there is ill-feeling, trust her not.	26 Hai una moglie secondo il tuo cuore? Non ripudiarla, ma se non le vuoi bene, non fidarti.
27 With your whole heart honor your father; your mother's birthpangs forget not.	27 Onora tuo padre con tutto il cuore e non dimenticare le doglie di tua madre.
28 Remember, of these parents you were born; what can you give them for all they gave you?	28 Ricorda che essi ti hanno generato: che cosa darai loro in cambio di quanto ti hanno dato?
29 With all your soul, fear God, revere his priests.	29 Con tutta l’anima temi il Signore e abbi riverenza per i suoi sacerdoti.
30 With all your strength, love your Creator, forsake not his ministers.	30 Ama con tutta la forza chi ti ha creato e non trascurare i suoi ministri.
31 Honor God and respect the priest; give him his portion as you have been commanded: First fruits and contributions, due sacrifices and holy offerings.	31 Temi il Signore e onora il sacerdote, dàgli la sua parte, come ti è stato comandato: primizie, sacrifici di riparazione, offerta delle spalle, vittima di santificazione e primizie delle cose sante.
32 To the poor man also extend your hand, that your blessing may be complete;	32 Anche al povero tendi la tua mano, perché sia perfetta la tua benedizione.
33 Be generous to all the living, and withhold not your kindness from the dead.	33 La tua generosità si estenda a ogni vivente, ma anche al morto non negare la tua pietà.
34 Avoid not those who weep, but mourn with those who mourn;	34 Non evitare coloro che piangono e con gli afflitti móstrati afflitto.
35 Neglect not to visit the sick-- for these things you will be loved.	35 Non esitare a visitare un malato, perché per questo sarai amato.
36 In whatever you do, remember your last days, and you will never sin.	36 In tutte le tue opere ricòrdati della tua fine e non cadrai mai nel peccato.
