Sirach 7

1 Do no evil, and evil will not overtake you;	1 Ne tégy rosszat, akkor téged sem ér semmi rossz,
2 avoid wickedness, and it will turn aside from you.	2 kerüld az igaztalanságot, akkor távol marad tőled a baj.
3 Sow not in the furrows of injustice, lest you harvest it sevenfold.	3 Fiam! Ne vess gonosz magot igaztalan barázdába, akkor nem aratod azt hétszeresen!
4 Seek not from the LORD authority, nor from the king a place of honor.	4 Ne kérj magadnak az Úrtól uralmat, sem a királytól díszes ülőhelyet!
5 Parade not your justice before the Lord, and before the king flaunt not your wisdom.	5 Ne tartsd magadat igaznak Isten előtt, mert ő belelát a szívbe, és ne akarj a király mellett okosnak feltűnni.
6 Seek not to become a judge if you have not strength to root out crime, Or you will show favor to the ruler and mar your integrity.	6 Ne kívánj elöljáró lenni, ha nincsen erőd letörni a jogtalanságot, hogy meg ne ijedj a hatalmas képétől, és csorbát ne ejts feddhetetlenségeden.
7 Be guilty of no evil before the city's populace, nor disgrace yourself before the assembly.	7 Ne véts a város lakossága ellen, és ne elegyedj a nép közé!
8 Do not plot to repeat a sin; not even for one will you go unpunished.	8 A bűnt megismételni ne kívánd, mert egyért sem maradsz büntetlenül.
9 Say not: "He will appreciate my many gifts; the Most High will accept my offerings."	9 Ne légy csüggeteg lelkű,
10 Be not impatient in prayers, and neglect not the giving of alms.	10 ne restelld az imát és az alamizsnálkodást!
11 Laugh not at an embittered man; be mindful of him who exalts and humbles.	11 Ne mondd: »Adományaim sokaságát tekinti Isten, ha áldozok a fölséges Istennek, elfogadja ajándékaim!«
12 Plot no mischief against your brother, nor against your friend and companion.	12 Ne gúnyolj senkit sem lelke keserűségében, mert van, aki megaláz és felemel: a gondviselő Isten!
13 Delight not in telling lie after lie, for it never results in good.	13 Ne tervezz álnokságot testvéred ellen, de barátod ellen se tégy ilyesmit!
14 Thrust not yourself into the deliberations of princes, and repeat not the words of your prayer.	14 Ne kívánj hazudni sohasem, mert nem jó azt megszokni.
15 Hate not laborious tasks, nor farming, which was ordained by the Most High.	15 Ne fecsegj az előkelők gyülekezetében, és ne szaporítsd a szót imádságodban!
16 Do not esteem yourself better than your fellows; remember, his wrath will not delay.	16 Ne restelld a fáradságos dolgot, a föld megmunkálását, hisz azt a Magasságbeli rendelte!
17 More and more, humble your pride; what awaits man is worms.	17 Ne számítsd magad a fegyelmezetlen tömeghez;
18 Barter not a friend for money, nor a dear brother for the gold of Ophir.	18 gondolj a haragra, amely nem késik!
19 Dismiss not a sensible wife; a gracious wife is more precious than corals.	19 Alázd meg magadat nagyon, mert a bűnös testének fenyítéke tűz és féreg!
20 Mistreat not a servant who faithfully serves, nor a laborer who devotes himself to his task.	20 Ne véts barátod ellen, ha késik a fizetéssel, ne vesd meg aranyért drága testvéredet!
21 Let a wise servant be dear to you as your own self; refuse him not his freedom.	21 Ne hagyd el az okos és jó asszonyt, akit elnyertél Isten félelmében, mert tisztességének bája aranynál is többet ér.
22 If you have livestock, look after them; if they are dependable, keep them.	22 Ne bánj rosszul a szolgával, aki híven szolgál, sem a béressel, aki a lelkét is kiteszi!
23 If you have sons, chastise them; bend their necks from childhood.	23 Az értelmes szolgát úgy szeresd, mint magadat; ne tagadd meg tőle a felszabadítást, és ne hagyd őt nyomorogni!
24 If you have daughters, keep them chaste, and be not indulgent to them.	24 Barmaid vannak? Ügyelj rájuk, és ha megfelelők, tartsd meg őket.
25 Giving your daughter in marriage ends a great task; but give her to a worthy man.	25 Fiaid vannak? Neveld meg őket, alakítsd őket gyermekkoruktól fogva!
26 If you have a wife, let her not seem odious to you; but where there is ill-feeling, trust her not.	26 Leányaid vannak? Őrizd a testüket, és ne mutass nekik nyájas arcot!
27 With your whole heart honor your father; your mother's birthpangs forget not.	27 Add férjhez leányodat, akkor nagy dolgot műveltél, de értelmes férfihez add!
28 Remember, of these parents you were born; what can you give them for all they gave you?	28 Ha kedvedre való feleséged van, ne taszítsd el magadtól, de ne bízd magad eltaszított asszonyra. Teljes szívvel
29 With all your soul, fear God, revere his priests.	29 tiszteld apádat, és meg ne feledkezz anyád fájdalmairól!
30 With all your strength, love your Creator, forsake not his ministers.	30 Gondold meg, hogy nem születtél volna nélkülük, úgy fizess nekik, amint ők neked!
31 Honor God and respect the priest; give him his portion as you have been commanded: First fruits and contributions, due sacrifices and holy offerings.	31 Teljes lelkedből féld az Urat, és tartsd tiszteletben az ő papjait!
32 To the poor man also extend your hand, that your blessing may be complete;	32 Minden erődből szeresd Alkotódat, és ne hagyd cserben az ő szolgáit!
33 Be generous to all the living, and withhold not your kindness from the dead.	33 Tiszteld Istent teljes lelkedből, és becsüld meg a papokat, szerezz magadnak engesztelést áldozati lapockákkal.
34 Avoid not those who weep, but mourn with those who mourn;	34 Add meg nekik a részt, amint az neked elő van írva, a zsengéből és az engesztelő áldozatokból, s a vétségtől tisztítsd meg magadat csekély adománnyal.
35 Neglect not to visit the sick-- for these things you will be loved.	35 Az áldozati lapockát és a megszentelő áldozatot mutasd be az Úrnak, s a szent zsengéket is!
36 In whatever you do, remember your last days, and you will never sin.	36 A szegénynek nyújtsd a kezedet, hogy tökéletes legyen engesztelésed és áldásod. Kedves az ajándék minden élő szemében, de a halottól se tagadd meg a kegyeletet! Ne hagyd a sírókat vigasz nélkül, és tarts a gyászolókkal! Ne restellj beteget látogatni, ezáltal erősödsz meg a szeretetben! Minden dolgodnál gondolj a végedre, akkor sohasem vétkezel többé!
