1 Like snow in summer, or rain in harvest, honor for a fool is out of place.	1 Come la neve all'estate e la pioggia al tempo della messe, così l'onore non s'addice allo stolto.
2 Like the sparrow in its flitting, like the swallow in its flight, a curse uncalled-for arrives nowhere.	2 Come uccello che passa volando, come passerotto che va qua e là, così la maledizione non meritata non ha effetto.
3 The whip for the horse, the bridle for the ass, and the rod for the back of fools.	3 La frusta pel cavallo, la cavezza per l'asino, il bastone sul dorso degli stolti.
4 Answer not the fool according to his folly, lest you too become like him.	4 Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, chè tu non abbia a diventar simile a lui.
5 Answer the fool according to his folly, lest he become wise in his own eyes.	5 Rispondi allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, perchè non si tenga saggio.
6 He cuts off his feet, he drinks down violence, who sends messages by a fool.	6 Si tronca le gambe e beve iniquità chi affida messaggi ad uno stolto.
7 A proverb in the mouth of a fool hangs limp, like crippled legs.	7 Come lo zoppo ha invano belle gambe, così le gravi sentenze non stan bene in bocca dello stolto.
8 Like one who entangles the stone in the sling is he who gives honor to a fool.	8 Come chi getta la pietra nel mucchio di Mercurio, così fa chi onora lo stollo.
9 Like a thorn stick brandished by the hand of a drunkard is a proverb in the mouth of fools.	9 Come spina capitata nella mano d'un briaco, così una massima nella bocca dello stolto.
10 Like an archer wounding all who pass by is he who hires a drunken fool.	10 La sentenza del giudice finisce le liti, e chi impone silenzio allo stolto calma gli sdegni.
11 As the dog returns to his vomit, so the fool repeats his folly.	11 Come cane che torna al suo vomito, così è lo stolto che ricade nella sua stoltezza.
12 You see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.	12 Hai tu veduto un uomo che si crede sapiente? Più di lui può sperare uno stolto.
13 The sluggard says, "There is a lion in the street, a lion in the middle of the square!"	13 Dice il pigro: « C'è un leone nella via, c'è una leonessa nel cammino ».
14 The door turns on its hinges, the sluggard, on his bed!	14 Come la porta gira sui gangheri, così il pigro nel suo letto.
15 The sluggard loses his hand in the dish; he is too weary to lift it to his mouth.	15 Il pigro nasconde la mano sotto l'ascella, gli par gran fatica portarla alla bocca.
16 The sluggard imagines himself wiser than seven men who answer with good sense.	16 Il pigro si crede più sapiente di sette uomini che pronunziano sentenze.
17 Like the man who seizes a passing dog by the ears is he who meddles in a quarrel not his own.	17 E' come chi piglia un cane per le orecchie colui che, passando, s'irrita e s'immischia nella lite d'un altro.
18 Like a crazed archer scattering firebrands and deadly arrows	18 Come è reo chi scaglia saette e dardi mortali,
19 Is the man who deceives his neighbor, and then says, "I was only joking."	19 così è colui che danneggia con frode l'amico, e, scoperto, dice: « L'ho fatto per scherzo ».
20 For lack of wood, the fire dies out; and when there is no talebearer, strife subsides.	20 Al mancar della legna si spegne il fuoco, tolto via il sussurrone, cessan le contese.
21 What a bellows is to live coals, what wood is to fire, such is a contentious man in enkindling strife.	21 Come i carboni dàn la brace e le legna il fuoco, così l'iracondo accende le risse.
22 The words of a talebearer are like dainty morsels that sink into one's inmost being.	22 Le parole del sussurrone sembran semplici, ma penetrano nell'intimo delle viscere.
23 Like a glazed finish on earthenware are smooth lips with a wicked heart.	23 Come scoria d'argento a vernice di vaso di terra cotta, così le labbra gonfie unite a cuore malvagio.
24 With his lips an enemy pretends, but in his inmost being he maintains deceit;	24 Il nemico si riconosce al suo parlare, quando nel cuore cova tradimenti.
25 When he speaks graciously, trust him not, for seven abominations are in his heart.	25 Quando parla con voce sommessa, non te ne fidare, perchè porta nel cuore sette malizie.
26 A man may conceal hatred under dissimulation, but his malice will be revealed in the assembly.	26 Egli con finzione nasconde il suo odio, ma la sua malizia sarà rivelata nell'assemblea.
27 He who digs a pit falls into it; and a stone comes back upon him who rolls it.	27 Chi scava la fossa vi cadrà, e la pietra cadrà addosso a chi la rotola.
28 The lying tongue is its owner's enemy, and the flattering mouth works ruin.	28 La lingua ingannatrice non ama la verità, la bocca che adula è causa di rovine.
