1 Like snow in summer, or rain in harvest, honor for a fool is out of place.	1 Come neve d’estate e pioggia alla mietitura, così l’onore non conviene allo stolto.
2 Like the sparrow in its flitting, like the swallow in its flight, a curse uncalled-for arrives nowhere.	2 Come passero che svolazza, come rondine che volteggia, così una maledizione immotivata non ha effetto.
3 The whip for the horse, the bridle for the ass, and the rod for the back of fools.	3 La frusta per il cavallo, la cavezza per l’asino e il bastone per la schiena degli stolti.
4 Answer not the fool according to his folly, lest you too become like him.	4 Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, per non divenire anche tu simile a lui.
5 Answer the fool according to his folly, lest he become wise in his own eyes.	5 Rispondi allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, perché egli non si creda saggio.
6 He cuts off his feet, he drinks down violence, who sends messages by a fool.	6 Si taglia i piedi e beve amarezze chi invia messaggi per mezzo di uno stolto.
7 A proverb in the mouth of a fool hangs limp, like crippled legs.	7 Come pendono le gambe da uno zoppo, così una massima sulla bocca dello stolto.
8 Like one who entangles the stone in the sling is he who gives honor to a fool.	8 Come chi lega una pietra alla fionda, così chi attribuisce onori a uno stolto.
9 Like a thorn stick brandished by the hand of a drunkard is a proverb in the mouth of fools.	9 Come ramo spinoso in mano a un ubriaco, così una massima sulla bocca dello stolto.
10 Like an archer wounding all who pass by is he who hires a drunken fool.	10 È come un arciere che colpisce a caso chi paga lo stolto o stipendia il primo che passa.
11 As the dog returns to his vomit, so the fool repeats his folly.	11 Come il cane torna al suo vomito, così lo stolto ripete le sue stoltezze.
12 You see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.	12 Hai visto un uomo che è saggio ai suoi occhi? C’è più da sperare da uno stolto che da lui.
13 The sluggard says, "There is a lion in the street, a lion in the middle of the square!"	13 Il pigro dice: «C’è una belva per la strada, un leone si aggira per le piazze».
14 The door turns on its hinges, the sluggard, on his bed!	14 La porta gira sui cardini, così il pigro sul suo letto.
15 The sluggard loses his hand in the dish; he is too weary to lift it to his mouth.	15 Il pigro immerge la mano nel piatto, ma dura fatica a riportarla alla bocca.
16 The sluggard imagines himself wiser than seven men who answer with good sense.	16 Il pigro si crede più saggio di sette persone che rispondono con senno.
17 Like the man who seizes a passing dog by the ears is he who meddles in a quarrel not his own.	17 È simile a chi prende un cane per le orecchie un passante che si intromette nella lite di un altro.
18 Like a crazed archer scattering firebrands and deadly arrows	18 Come un pazzo che scaglia tizzoni e frecce di morte,
19 Is the man who deceives his neighbor, and then says, "I was only joking."	19 così è colui che inganna il suo prossimo e poi dice: «Ma sì, è stato uno scherzo!».
20 For lack of wood, the fire dies out; and when there is no talebearer, strife subsides.	20 Per mancanza di legna il fuoco si spegne; se non c’è il calunniatore, il litigio si calma.
21 What a bellows is to live coals, what wood is to fire, such is a contentious man in enkindling strife.	21 Mantice per il carbone e legna per il fuoco, tale è l’attaccabrighe per attizzare le liti.
22 The words of a talebearer are like dainty morsels that sink into one's inmost being.	22 Le parole del calunniatore sono come ghiotti bocconi, che scendono fin nell’intimo.
23 Like a glazed finish on earthenware are smooth lips with a wicked heart.	23 Come patina d’argento su un coccio di creta sono le labbra lusinghiere con un cuore maligno.
24 With his lips an enemy pretends, but in his inmost being he maintains deceit;	24 Chi odia si maschera con le labbra, ma nel suo intimo cova inganni;
25 When he speaks graciously, trust him not, for seven abominations are in his heart.	25 anche se usa espressioni melliflue, non credergli, perché nel cuore egli ha sette obbrobri.
26 A man may conceal hatred under dissimulation, but his malice will be revealed in the assembly.	26 Chi odia si nasconde con astuzia, ma la sua malizia apparirà pubblicamente.
27 He who digs a pit falls into it; and a stone comes back upon him who rolls it.	27 Chi scava una fossa vi cadrà dentro e chi rotola una pietra, gli ricadrà addosso.
28 The lying tongue is its owner's enemy, and the flattering mouth works ruin.	28 Una lingua bugiarda fa molti danni, una bocca adulatrice produce rovina.
