A psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah. | 1 A psalm of David when he was in the desert of Edom. |
O God, you are my God-- for you I long! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts, Like a land parched, lifeless, and without water. | 2 O God, my God, to thee do I watch at break of day. For thee my soul hath thirsted; for thee my flesh, O how many ways! |
So I look to you in the sanctuary to see your power and glory. | 3 In a desert land, and where there is no way, and no water: so in the sanctuary have I come before thee, to see thy power and thy glory. |
For your love is better than life; my lips offer you worship! | 4 For thy mercy is better than lives: thee my lips shall praise. |
I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands, calling on your name. | 5 Thus will I bless thee all my life long: and in thy name I will lift up my hands. |
My soul shall savor the rich banquet of praise, with joyous lips my mouth shall honor you! | 6 Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness: and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips. |
When I think of you upon my bed, through the night watches I will recall | 7 If I have remembered thee upon my bed, I will meditate on thee in the morning: |
That you indeed are my help, and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy. | 8 because thou hast been my helper. And I will rejoice under the covert of thy wings: |
My soul clings fast to you; your right hand upholds me. | 9 my soul hath stuck close to thee: thy right hand hath received me. |
But those who seek my life will come to ruin; they shall go down to the depths of the earth! | 10 But they have sought my soul in vain, they shall go into the lower parts of the earth: |
They shall be handed over to the sword and become the prey of jackals! | 11 They shall be delivered into the hands of the sword, they shall be the portions of foxes. |
But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by the Lord shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be shut! | 12 But the king shall rejoice in God, all they shall be praised that swear by him: because the mouth is stopped of them that speak wicked things. |
