¹ Therefore, O Job, hear my discourse, and hearken to all my words.	¹ Ascolta adunque, o Giobbe, il mio ragionare, e pon mente a tutte le mie parole.
² Behold, now I open my mouth; my tongue and my voice form words.	² Apro adesso la mia bocca, la mia lingua articola le voci sotto del mio palato.
³ I will state directly what is in my mind, my lips shall utter knowledge sincerely;	³ I miei parlari verranno da cuore schietto, e le mie labbra proferiranno sentimenti di verità.
⁴ For the spirit of God has made me, the breath of the Almighty keeps me alive.	⁴ Lo spirito di Dio mi creò, e il soffio dell'Onnipotente mi diede la vita.
⁵ If you are able, refute me; draw up your arguments and stand forth.	⁵ Rispondimi se potrai, e contraddicimi in faccia.
⁶ Behold I, like yourself, have been taken from the same clay by God.	⁶ Tu vedi, che me come te fece Dio, e che io pure fui formato del medesimo fango.
⁷ Therefore no fear of me should dismay you, nor should my presence weigh heavily upon you.	⁷ Ma i miei prodigj non ti recheranno terrore, né ti sbalordirà la mia eloquenza.
⁸ But you have said in my hearing, as I listened to the sound of your words:	⁸ Tu adunque di mia sentita dicesti, e il suono di queste parole fu udito da me:
⁹ "I am clean and without transgression; I am innocent; there is no guilt in me.	⁹ Mondo son io, e senza reato; immacolato, e scevro di iniquità.
¹⁰ Yet he invents pretexts against me and reckons me as his enemy.	¹⁰ Perché ha trovate querele contro di me, per questo mi ha riguardata come suo nimico.
¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks; he watches all my ways!"	¹¹ Ha posti ne' ceppi i miei piedi ha osservati tutti i miei andamenti.
¹² In this you are not just, let me tell you; for God is greater than man.	¹² In questo adunque tu non se' stato giusto: io ti risponderò, che Dio è più grande dell'uomo.
¹³ Why, then, do you make complaint against him that he gives no account of his doings?	¹³ Con lui tu vieni a contesa, perché egli non ha risposto a tutte le tue parole?
¹⁴ For God does speak, perhaps once, or even twice, though one perceive it not.	¹⁴ Dio parla una volta, e la stessa cosa non ripete due volte.
¹⁵ In a dream, in a vision of the night, (when deep sleep falls upon men) as they slumber in their beds,	¹⁵ In sogno, con notturne visioni, quando gli uomini vinti dal sonno riposano ne' loro letti,
¹⁶ It is then he opens the ears of men and as a warning to them, terrifies them;	¹⁶ Allora egli apre agli uomini le orecchie, e gli istruisce, e li corregge,
¹⁷ By turning man from evil and keeping pride away from him,	¹⁷ Per ritrar l'uomo da quel ch'ei fa, e liberarlo dalla superbia:
¹⁸ He withholds his soul from the pit and his life from passing to the grave.	¹⁸ Salvando l'anima di lui dalla corruzione, e la sua vita dal taglio della spada.
¹⁹ Or a man is chastened on his bed by pain and unceasing suffering within his frame,	¹⁹ Egli parimente lo corregge nel letto co' dolori, e fa marcir le sue ossa.
²⁰ So that to his appetite food becomes repulsive, and his senses reject the choicest nourishment.	²⁰ In questo suo stato egli ha in orrore il pane, e il cibo una volta si grato al suo appetito.
²¹ His flesh is wasted so that it cannot be seen, and his bones, once invisible, appear;	²¹ La carne di lui si va consumando, e le ossa prima ascose rimangono scoperte.
²² His soul draws near to the pit, his life to the place of the dead.	²² Egli si avvicina alla corruzione, e la sua vita da tutti i segni di morte.
²³ If then there be for him an angel, one out of a thousand, a mediator, To show him what is right for him and bring the man back to justice,	²³ Se uno delle migliaia di Angeli per lui parlerà, e lo istruirà de' doveri dell'uomo,
²⁴ He will take pity on him and say, "Deliver him from going down to the pit; I have found him a ransom."	²⁴ Egli avrà compassione di lui, e dirà: Salvalo dal cadere nella corru zione: ho trovato motivo onde averne pietà.
²⁵ Then his flesh shall become soft as a boy's; he shall be again as in the days of his youth.	²⁵ La sua carne è stata consunta dai malori: ch'ei ritorni come ne' giorni di sua giovinezza.
²⁶ He shall pray and God will favor him; he shall see God's face with rejoicing.	²⁶ Egli porgerà a Dio sue preghiere; e questi con lui si placherà, è con lieta faccia lo mirerà, e renderà all'uomo la sua giustizia.
²⁷ He shall sing before men and say, "I sinned and did wrong, yet he has not punished me accordingly.	²⁷ E rivolto agli uomini dirà egli: Io peccai, e prevaricai veramente, e non fui punito com'io meritava.
²⁸ He delivered my soul from passing to the pit, and I behold the light of life."	²⁸ Egli ha liberata l'anima sua dal cader nella morte, e viverà, e goderà della luce:
²⁹ Lo, all these things God does, twice, or thrice, for a man,	²⁹ Così Dio tutte queste cose fa per tre volte con ciascheduno:
³⁰ Bringing back his soul from the pit to the light, in the land of the living.	³⁰ Per richiamare le anime loro dalla corruzione, e rischiararle colla luce de' viventi.
³¹ Be attentive, O Job; listen to me! Be silent and I will speak.	³¹ Pon mente, o Giobbe, e ascoltami, e taci mentre io parlo.
³² If you have aught to say, then answer me. Speak out! I should like to see you justified.	³² Che se qualche cosa hai da dire rispondimi, e parla; perocché io desidero, che tu comparisca giusto.
³³ If not, then do you listen to me; be silent while I teach you wisdom.	³³ Ma se non hai nulla, ascoltami: taci, e ti insegnerò la saggezza.
