1 Job took up his theme anew and said;	1 Giobbe riprese a pronunciare i suoi versi dicendo:
2 Oh, that I were as in the months past! as in the days when God watched over me,	2 "Chi mi renderà come ai giorni antichi, quando Dio mi proteggeva,
3 While he kept his lamp shining above my head, and by his light I walked through darkness;	3 quando la sua lucerna brillava sopra il mio capo e alla sua luce camminavo in mezzo alle tenebre?
4 As I was in my flourishing days, when God sheltered my tent;	4 Com'ero ai giorni del mio autunno, quando l'amicizia di Dio riposava sulla mia tenda,
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were round about me;	5 quando l'Onnipotente era ancora con me e i miei figli mi stavano intorno!
6 When my footsteps were bathed in milk, and the rock flowed with streams of oil;	6 Lavavo i piedi nel latte e la roccia mi versava ruscelli d'olio.
7 When I went forth to the gate of the city and set up my seat in the square-	7 Quando uscivo verso la porta della città e disponevo il mio seggio in piazza,
8 Then the young men saw me and withdrew, while the elders rose up and stood;	8 i giovani, vedendomi, si tiravano in disparte, gli anziani si alzavano rimanendo in piedi.
9 The chief men refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands;	9 I notabili si astenevano dal parlare e si ponevano la mano alla bocca.
10 The voice of the princes was silenced, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths.	10 La voce dei capi si smorzava e la loro lingua si incollava al palato.
11 Whoever heard of me blessed me; those who saw me commended me.	11 L'orecchio che mi ascoltava, mi proclamava felice, e l'occhio che mi vedeva, mi rendeva testimonianza;
12 For I rescued the poor who cried out for help, the orphans, and the unassisted;	12 soccorrevo il povero che chiedeva aiuto e l'orfano che nessuno assisteva.
13 The blessing of those in extremity came upon me, and the heart of the widow I made joyful.	13 La benedizione del morente scendeva su di me e rendevo la gioia al cuore della vedova.
14 I wore my honesty like a garment; justice was my robe and my turban.	14 Mi ero rivestito di giustizia come di un vestimento, la mia equità era come mantello e turbante.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame was I;	15 Ero occhi per il cieco e piedi per lo zoppo;
16 I was a father to the needy; the rights of the stranger I studied,	16 ero padre per i poveri ed esaminavo la causa dello sconosciuto.
17 And I broke the jaws of the wicked man; from his teeth I forced the prey.	17 Spezzavo le mascelle dell'iniquo e dai suoi denti strappavo la preda.
18 Then I said: "In my own nest I shall grow old; I shall multiply years like the phoenix.	18 E pensavo: "Spirerò nel mio nido; aumenterò i miei anni come la sabbia.
19 My root is spread out to the waters; the dew rests by night on my branches.	19 La mia radice si alimenterà alle acque e la rugiada cadrà di notte sul mio ramo.
20 My glory is fresh within me, and my bow is renewed in my hand!"	20 Il mio prestigio sarà sempre nuovo e il mio arco si rinforzerà nella mia mano".
21 For me they listened and waited; they were silent for my counsel.	21 Mi ascoltavano in fiduciosa attesa e tacevano per udire il mio consiglio.
22 Once I spoke, they said no more, but received my pronouncement drop by drop.	22 Dopo che avevano parlato, non replicavano; su di loro cadevano goccia a goccia i miei detti.
23 They waited for me as for the rain; they drank in my words like the spring rains.	23 Li attendevano come si aspetta la pioggia, e li bevevano come acqua di primavera.
24 When I smiled on them they were reassured;	24 Se scherzavo, non credevano, e non lasciavano cadere nemmeno un gesto del mio favore.
25 mourners took comfort from my cheerful glance. I chose out their way and presided; I took a king's place in the armed forces.	25 Seduto come capo, fissavo loro la via, e vi rimanevo come un re fra le sue schiere; dove li guidavo, si lasciavano condurre.
