1 Job took up his theme anew and said;	1 Giobbe continuò a pronunziare le sue sentenze e disse:
2 Oh, that I were as in the months past! as in the days when God watched over me,	2 Oh, potessi tornare com'ero ai mesi di un tempo, ai giorni in cui Dio mi proteggeva,
3 While he kept his lamp shining above my head, and by his light I walked through darkness;	3 quando brillava la sua lucerna sopra il mio capo e alla sua luce camminavo in mezzo alle tenebre;
4 As I was in my flourishing days, when God sheltered my tent;	4 com'ero ai giorni del mio autunno, quando Dio proteggeva la mia tenda,
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were round about me;	5 quando l'Onnipotente era ancora con me e i giovani mi stavano attorno;
6 When my footsteps were bathed in milk, and the rock flowed with streams of oil;	6 quando mi lavavo in piedi nel latte e la roccia mi versava ruscelli d'olio!
7 When I went forth to the gate of the city and set up my seat in the square-	7 Quando uscivo verso la porta della città e sulla piazza ponevo il mio seggio:
8 Then the young men saw me and withdrew, while the elders rose up and stood;	8 vedendomi, i giovani si ritiravano e i vecchi si alzavano in piedi;
9 The chief men refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands;	9 i notabili sospendevano i discorsi e si mettevan la mano sulla bocca;
10 The voice of the princes was silenced, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths.	10 la voce dei capi si smorzava e la loro lingua restava fissa al palato;
11 Whoever heard of me blessed me; those who saw me commended me.	11 con gli orecchi ascoltavano e mi dicevano felice, con gli occhi vedevano e mi rendevano testimonianza,
12 For I rescued the poor who cried out for help, the orphans, and the unassisted;	12 perché soccorrevo il povero che chiedeva aiuto, l'orfano che ne era privo.
13 The blessing of those in extremity came upon me, and the heart of the widow I made joyful.	13 La benedizione del morente scendeva su di me e al cuore della vedova infondevo la gioia.
14 I wore my honesty like a garment; justice was my robe and my turban.	14 Mi ero rivestito di giustizia come di un vestimento; come mantello e turbante era la mia equità.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame was I;	15 Io ero gli occhi per il cieco, ero i piedi per lo zoppo.
16 I was a father to the needy; the rights of the stranger I studied,	16 Padre io ero per i poveri ed esaminavo la causa dello sconosciuto;
17 And I broke the jaws of the wicked man; from his teeth I forced the prey.	17 rompevo la mascella al perverso e dai suoi denti strappavo la preda.
18 Then I said: "In my own nest I shall grow old; I shall multiply years like the phoenix.	18 Pensavo: "Spirerò nel mio nido e moltiplicherò come sabbia i miei giorni".
19 My root is spread out to the waters; the dew rests by night on my branches.	19 La mia radice avrà adito alle acque e la rugiada cadrà di notte sul mio ramo.
20 My glory is fresh within me, and my bow is renewed in my hand!"	20 La mia gloria sarà sempre nuova e il mio arco si rinforzerà nella mia mano.
21 For me they listened and waited; they were silent for my counsel.	21 Mi ascoltavano in attesa fiduciosa e tacevano per udire il mio consiglio.
22 Once I spoke, they said no more, but received my pronouncement drop by drop.	22 Dopo le mie parole non replicavano e su di loro scendevano goccia a goccia i miei detti.
23 They waited for me as for the rain; they drank in my words like the spring rains.	23 Mi attendevano come si attende la pioggia e aprivano la bocca come ad acqua primaverile.
24 When I smiled on them they were reassured;	24 Se a loro sorridevo, non osavano crederlo, né turbavano la serenità del mio volto.
25 mourners took comfort from my cheerful glance. I chose out their way and presided; I took a king's place in the armed forces.	25 Indicavo loro la via da seguire e sedevo come capo, e vi rimanevo come un re fra i soldati o come un consolatore d'afflitti.
