1 Job took up his theme anew and said;	1 Soggiunse indi Giobbe, ripigliando la sua parabola, e disse:
2 Oh, that I were as in the months past! as in the days when God watched over me,	2 Chi mi darà, ch'io ritorni qual era nei mesi trascorsi, come ne' giorni, in cui Dio avea la custodia di me?
3 While he kept his lamp shining above my head, and by his light I walked through darkness;	3 Allorché il suo lume risplendeva sulla mia testa, e tralle tenebre io camminava guidato dalla sua luce.
4 As I was in my flourishing days, when God sheltered my tent;	4 Qual era ne' giorni di mia giovinezza allorché Dio segretamente si stava nella mia tenda.
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were round about me;	5 Quando meco si stava l'Onnipotente, e attorno a me tutti i miei figli
6 When my footsteps were bathed in milk, and the rock flowed with streams of oil;	6 Quand'io col burro ungeva i miei piedi, e da' massi sgorgavano rividi olio per me.
7 When I went forth to the gate of the city and set up my seat in the square-	7 Quand'io me n'andava alla porta della città, e nella piazza mi preparavano la residenza.
8 Then the young men saw me and withdrew, while the elders rose up and stood;	8 In reggendomi i giovani si ritirivano, e i vecchi si alzavano, e stavano in piedi.
9 The chief men refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands;	9 I principi più non fiatavano, e mettevano il dito sulle lor labbra.
10 The voice of the princes was silenced, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths.	10 I grandi rattenevan la loro voce, e la loro lingua era attaccata al palato.
11 Whoever heard of me blessed me; those who saw me commended me.	11 Beato, diceami, chi ascoltava le mie parole, e chi mi vedea, dicea bene di me;
12 For I rescued the poor who cried out for help, the orphans, and the unassisted;	12 Perch'io liberava il povero che strideva, e il pupillo privo di difensore.
13 The blessing of those in extremity came upon me, and the heart of the widow I made joyful.	13 Benedizioni mandava a me colui, che stava in pericolo di perire, e al cuor della vedova io porgeva conforto.
14 I wore my honesty like a garment; justice was my robe and my turban.	14 Mi rivestii di giustizia, e della mia equità mi adornai come di manto, e di diadema.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame was I;	15 Io fui occhio al cieco, e piede allo zoppo.
16 I was a father to the needy; the rights of the stranger I studied,	16 Io era il padre de' poveri, e delle cause a me ignote faceva diligentissima inquisizione.
17 And I broke the jaws of the wicked man; from his teeth I forced the prey.	17 Io spezzava le mascelle a' malvagj, e strappava lor di tra i denti la preda.
18 Then I said: "In my own nest I shall grow old; I shall multiply years like the phoenix.	18 E diceva: Io morrò nel mio nido, e come la palma moltiplicherò i miei giorni.
19 My root is spread out to the waters; the dew rests by night on my branches.	19 La mia radice diffondesi lungo le acque, e la rugiada si poserà su' miei rami.
20 My glory is fresh within me, and my bow is renewed in my hand!"	20 Sempre nuova sarà la mia gloria, e il mio arco sarà sempre più forte nella mia mano.
21 For me they listened and waited; they were silent for my counsel.	21 Quelli che mi ascoltavano aspettavano il mio parere, e in silenzio stavano attenti al mio consiglio.
22 Once I spoke, they said no more, but received my pronouncement drop by drop.	22 Non ardivano di aggiunger cosa alle mie parole, e i miei discorsi cadevano a stille sopra di loro.
23 They waited for me as for the rain; they drank in my words like the spring rains.	23 Ma essi aspettavano come la pioggia, e aprivano la loro bocca, come alla piova della tarda stagione.
24 When I smiled on them they were reassured;	24 Se qualche volta io scherzava con essi, non sei credevano, e la ilarità del mio volto non era senza il suo frutto.
25 mourners took comfort from my cheerful glance. I chose out their way and presided; I took a king's place in the armed forces.	25 Se io voleva andare tra loro, stava assiso nel primo posto, e sedendo qual re circondato di armati, era con tutto ciò il consolator degli afflitti.
