1 Job took up his theme anew and said;	1 - E continuò Giobbe, riprendendo la sua sentenza, e disse:
2 Oh, that I were as in the months past! as in the days when God watched over me,	2 «Oh! se io potessi tornare come ai mesi di prima, come ai giorni in cui Dio mi custodiva!
3 While he kept his lamp shining above my head, and by his light I walked through darkness;	3 Allorchè splendeva la sua lucerna sul mio capo, e alla sua luce camminavo fra le tenebre!
4 As I was in my flourishing days, when God sheltered my tent;	4 Com'ero ai giorni di mia giovinezza, allorchè Dio segretamente stava nella mia tenda;
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were round about me;	5 quando l'Onnipotente era meco, e attorno a me stavano i miei ragazzi;
6 When my footsteps were bathed in milk, and the rock flowed with streams of oil;	6 quando i miei piedi guazzavano nella pannae dal sasso scaturivano per me ruscelli d'olio;
7 When I went forth to the gate of the city and set up my seat in the square-	7 quando, incamminandomi verso la porta della città, mi preparavano il seggio sulla piazza!
8 Then the young men saw me and withdrew, while the elders rose up and stood;	8 Vedendomi, i giovani si nascondevano, i vecchi s'alzavano e rimanevano in piedi;
9 The chief men refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands;	9 i maggiorenti cessavano di parlare, mettendosi il dito sulla bocca:
10 The voice of the princes was silenced, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths.	10 i nobili ritenevano la lor voce, e la lor lingua s'attaccava al palato.
11 Whoever heard of me blessed me; those who saw me commended me.	11 L'orecchio che udiva mi proclamava beato, e l'occhio che vedeva mi testimoniava [la lode];
12 For I rescued the poor who cried out for help, the orphans, and the unassisted;	12 giacchè io liberavo il povero che gridava [al soccorso], e l'orfano che non aveva difensore:
13 The blessing of those in extremity came upon me, and the heart of the widow I made joyful.	13 la benedizione del pericolante veniva su di me, e al cuor della vedova porgevo io conforto;
14 I wore my honesty like a garment; justice was my robe and my turban.	14 di giustizia io m'ammantavo, e mi rivestivocome di manto e diadema del mio diritto.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame was I;	15 L'occhio io fui per il cieco, e il piede fui per lo storpio;
16 I was a father to the needy; the rights of the stranger I studied,	16 dei poveri ero io il padre, e la difesa di chi m'era ignoto io m'assumevo con zelo;
17 And I broke the jaws of the wicked man; from his teeth I forced the prey.	17 spezzavo io le zanne del malvagio, e da' suoi denti cacciavo fuori la preda.
18 Then I said: "In my own nest I shall grow old; I shall multiply years like the phoenix.	18 E dicevo: - Nel mio niduccio io morirò, e come la palma moltiplicherò i miei giorni;
19 My root is spread out to the waters; the dew rests by night on my branches.	19 La mia radice s'espande verso l'acque , e la rugiada dimora sui miei rami;
20 My glory is fresh within me, and my bow is renewed in my hand!"	20 la mia gloria sempre si rinnova, e l'arco mio in mia mano ringiovanisce! -
21 For me they listened and waited; they were silent for my counsel.	21 Coloro che mi ascoltavano aspettavano la decisione, e tacevano intenti al mio consiglio;
22 Once I spoke, they said no more, but received my pronouncement drop by drop.	22 dopo le mie parole non ardivano replicare, e su di essi cadeva a stille il mio discorso:
23 They waited for me as for the rain; they drank in my words like the spring rains.	23 aspettavano me come la pioggia, aprendo la loro bocca come [terreno] a pioggia tardiva.
24 When I smiled on them they were reassured;	24 Se talvolta io sorridevo loro, ad essi non pareva vero, e lo splendore del mio volto non cadeva invano.
25 mourners took comfort from my cheerful glance. I chose out their way and presided; I took a king's place in the armed forces.	25 Quando gradivo andare da loro, mi assidevo per primo: e pur sedendo qual re in mezzo alle schiere, ero tuttavia consolatore degli afflitti.
