KING JAMES BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;1 Nolo enim vos ignorare, fra tres, quoniam patres nostri omnes sub nubefuerunt et omnes mare transierunt
And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;2 et omnes in Moyse baptizati sunt in nube etin mari
And did all eat the same spiritual meat;3 et omnes eandem escam spiritalem manducaverunt
And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.4 et omnes eundem potumspiritalem biberunt; bibebant autem de spiritali, consequente eos, petra; petraautem erat Christus.
But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.5 Sed non in pluribus eorum complacuit sibi Deus, namprostrati sunt in deserto.
Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.6 Haec autem figurae fuerunt nostrae, ut non simus concupiscentes malorum, sicutet illi concupierunt.
Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.7 Neque idolorum cultores efficiamini, sicut quidam exipsis; quemadmodum scriptum est: “ Sedit populus manducare et bibere, etsurrexerunt ludere ”.
Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.8 Neque fornicemur, sicut quidam ex ipsis fornicatisunt, et ceciderunt una die viginti tria milia.
Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.9 Neque tentemus Christum, sicutquidam eorum tentaverunt et a serpentibus perierunt.
Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.10 Neque murmuraveritis,sicut quidam eorum murmuraverunt et perierunt ab exterminatore.
Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.11 Haec autem infigura contingebant illis; scripta sunt autem ad correptionem nostram, in quosfines saeculorum devenerunt.
Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.12 Itaque, qui se existimat stare, videat, necadat.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.13 Tentatio vos non apprehendit nisi humana; fidelis autem Deus, qui nonpatietur vos tentari super id quod potestis, sed faciet cum tentatione etiamproventum, ut possitis sustinere.
Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.14 Propter quod, carissimi mihi, fugite ab idolorum cultura.
I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.15 Ut prudentibusloquor; vos iudicate, quod dico:
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?16 Calix benedictionis, cui benedicimus, nonnecommunicatio sanguinis Christi est? Et panis, quem frangimus, nonne communicatiocorporis Christi est?
For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.17 Quoniam unus panis, unum corpus multi sumus, omnes enimde uno pane participamur.
Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the alter?18 Videte Israel secundum carnem: nonne, qui edunthostias, communicantes sunt altari?
What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?19 Quid ergo dico? Quod idolothytum sit aliquid? Aut quod idolum sit aliquid?
But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.20 Sed, quae immolant, daemoniis immolant et non Deo; nolo autem vos communicantesfieri daemoniis.
Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.21 Non potestis calicem Domini bibere et calicem daemoniorum;non potestis mensae Domini participes esse et mensae daemoniorum.
Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?22 Anaemulamur Dominum? Numquid fortiores illo sumus?
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.23 “ Omnia licent! ”. Sed non omnia expediunt. “ Omnia licent! ”. Sednon omnia aedificant.
Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.24 Nemo, quod suum est, quaerat, sed quod alterius.
Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:25 Omne, quod in macello venit, manducate, nihil interrogantes propterconscientiam;
For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.26 Domini enim est terra, et plenitudo eius.
If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.27 Si quis vocat vos infidelium, et vultis ire, omne, quod vobis apponitur,manducate, nihil interrogantes propter conscientiam.
But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:28 Si quis autem vobisdixerit: “ Hoc immolaticium est idolis ”, nolite manducare, propter illum,qui indicavit, et propter conscientiam;
Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?29 conscientiam autem dico non tuamipsius sed alterius. Ut quid enim libertas mea iudicatur ab alia conscientia?
For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?30 Si ego cum gratia participo, quid blasphemor pro eo, quod gratias ago?
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.31 Sive ergo manducatis sive bibitis sive aliud quid facitis, omnia in gloriamDei facite.
Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:32 Sine offensione estote Iudaeis et Graecis et ecclesiae Dei,
Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.33 sicut et ego per omnia omnibus placeo, non quaerens, quod mihi utile est, sedquod multis, ut salvi fiant.
