KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;1 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea,
And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;2 and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
And did all eat the same spiritual meat;3 All ate the same spiritual food,
And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Christ.
But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.5 Yet God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the desert.
Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.6 These things happened as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did.
Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.7 And do not become idolaters, as some of them did, as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel."
Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.8 Let us not indulge in immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell within a single day.
Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.9 Let us not test Christ as some of them did, and suffered death by serpents.
Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.10 Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered death by the destroyer.
Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.11 These things happened to them as an example, and they have been written down as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the ages has come.
Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.12 Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.13 No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.
Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.14 Therefore, my beloved, avoid idolatry.
I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.15 I am speaking as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I am saying.
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.17 Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.
Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the alter?18 Look at Israel according to the flesh; are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar?
What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?19 So what am I saying? That meat sacrificed to idols is anything? Or that an idol is anything?
But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.20 No, I mean that what they sacrifice, (they sacrifice) to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to become participants with demons.
Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and also the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons.
Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?22 Or are we provoking the Lord to jealous anger? Are we stronger than he?
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.23 "Everything is lawful," but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is lawful," but not everything builds up.
Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.24 No one should seek his own advantage, but that of his neighbor.
Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:25 Eat anything sold in the market, without raising questions on grounds of conscience,
For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.26 for "the earth and its fullness are the Lord's."
If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.27 If an unbeliever invites you and you want to go, eat whatever is placed before you, without raising questions on grounds of conscience.
But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:28 But if someone says to you, "This was offered in sacrifice," do not eat it on account of the one who called attention to it and on account of conscience;
Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?29 I mean not your own conscience, but the other's. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else's conscience?
For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?30 If I partake thankfully, why am I reviled for that over which I give thanks?
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.31 So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.
Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:32 Avoid giving offense, whether to Jews or Greeks or the church of God,
Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.33 just as I try to please everyone in every way, not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, that they may be saved.
